PLEASE Can you get Jurgen Klinsmann on the show ? id love to hear about German football from the late 80's with the unification of Germany & if he has any stories of their 1990 WC squad, i think that'd be a great episode. love the show!!

the 3pm blackout isn’t for massive clubs there are a lot more teams than those in the premier league who would suffer massive implications due to the 3pm blackout being reversed and anyone who thinks otherwise is completely clueless
@ This has been studied and it was found that if the matches are on subscription TV channels the impact on crowd size is negligible (5% or less reduction). As no free-to-air channel has been able to afford live PL matches for years it’s not likely to have much of an effect (and the 5% reduction in ticket sales would likely be more than compensated by the fees paid to the clubs for the matches to be shown). There’s probably an argument for maintaining the blackout for the lower leagues, but there’s no good reason to have it for the PL.
As a Wigan fan since I was 8 (in the 70s), I can say without doubt, I would not swap the FA Cup experience for anything. We had 8 years in the Premier League, and it was great....but that day at Wembley was unforgettable. Give me a trophy any day.

I think it's supposed to be about protecting the attendance at lower league games. The thought is that people would just sit at home and watch the Premier League match on TV, rather than going to a League 1 or League 2 game.
Love the show lads! I know players love to play for their country. But I’m 100% club before country. I watch international matches purely to check that my club’s players are not injured ☺️

Keep the blackout. Used to love travelling to Reading games and getting home to watch Match of the Day. Still try and watch MotD on Saturday nights now - reminds me of my childhood
Gary, it's not bloody diminishing. How many people do you think there are in this country? The amount of people in the country is increasing vastly more than stadium capacities. I completely agree with them about evening kickoffs under lights I absolutely love it as a fan and on the extremely rare occasion I get it as a player it always feels completely different and it seems to put my performance level up.
The 3pm blackout myth that fans will stop turning up is nonsense imo. I'm a Liverpool fan so I know how hard it is to get a ticket for any Premier League game. If the issue is that season ticket holders wont turn up, for one they can sell their ticket now through the club. Secondly, if they failed to do that you could simply introduce a policy where if they don't sell their ticket and they fail to show up to x amount of games they'll loose their season ticket. It's as simple as that. Obviously this isn't the same for every club but Liverpool supposedly have an estimated 48 million fans according to Stadium Maps. The ground only holds 61,000 so that would mean that less that 1% of fans are getting into the ground. If the remaining 99% of fans (I know that's worldwide but a big chunk will be in the UK) can't watch the game using legitimate means, they're just going to watch a dodgy stream.
Strongly disagree with 3PM blackout. Stadiums are packed during 12:30 games, and 5:30 on a Saturday. Why would it be different for 3pm? Also, non season ticket holders buy tickets in advance, so would go to games no matter what, and season ticket holders have shown their dedication with the initial outlay, thy're going to games. It's Premier League football, people are going to pack the stadiums.
For the 3pm blackout, I very much doubt we would see a diminish in attendance. Why? Because we don't see lower attendances for all the games shown outside of that 3pm blackout. All games are sell-outs. Most PL clubs, if not all, have a paid membership system that has tens of thousands of people registered for a chance to attend a game. The only thing that it encourages, negatively in the interest of the PL and broadcasters, is the use of illegal streams or using a VPN to access another countries services. A modestly priced subscription system, similar to how Amazon handle their boxing day games, featuring every game, would be perfect. We can dream. The argument has always been that it'd impact the teams in the lower leagues, as they get attendance through PL supporters who are not able to watch their team, but surely that's less relveant today with those "other methods" becoming so commonplace.
3pm blackout is an outrageous hangover. it *might* affect lower league attendances some weeks but it would never harm prem attendances to repeal it. makes a mockery of laws against illegal streaming bc of course you will do it if it is the only way to see your team
Talking about the blackout, and you guys saying it may diminish audiences at the games if they were on the telly, at the minute games get shown on TV and that doesn't diminish the crowd for those games at all, so why would adding a few more matches change that, it doesn't make any sense, obviously that's just my opinion but there's no way to prove one way or the other without actually doing it, I think the best solution would be to announce a trial for a season to see how it works and if it does diminish crowds scrap it after the year and go back to the blackout and if it doesn't happy days
If all games were televised, the tv deals would be higher for the clubs HOPEFULLY meaning that the tickets would be cheaper, so attendance wouldn't be damaged. But I can already see a world where some clubs would lower the price and clubs like mine would probably increase it because of greed.
You think they would reduce prices, the TV deal has been going up consistently over the last 20 years and the price of tickets has gone up just as consistently sometimes with a year or 2 pause.
people will always fill the stadiums no matter what. there's nothing better than seeing it live. tickets for matches would probably be more in demand than ever.
I love the German Bundesliga, I watch at least a game a week on it since Operation Restart. Unfortunately my German team, Koln got relegated... I heard an expression I liked about it "The Bundesliga is a very fun league to watch, but it's not a very fun league to follow".
The 3pm blackout helps smaller clubs too. Some fans may support their local team and also a larger more well known team and if the premier league team was in TV at 3 would you bother walking down the road to your local side to watch semi professional football matches?
This whole exchange at 5:07 is utter bollocks. The atmosphere in the stadiums is objectively getting worse, as ticket prices become too expensive for many, and also as allocation is sold to tourists and part time fans who are more interested in coming in and filming themselves on their phones. The idea that the country that invented football doesn’t show the top league’s games on TV is a joke. I used to live in South Wast Asia and I was able to watch every game live. Good times. I’m able to watch far less football now in the home of football
If Alan Shearer join Man Utd instead of Newcastle Utd. He would hav score 40 premier league goals per season. If he is playing Man City now he would hav score 50 premier league per season. That's how great he was, He was a beast during his prime
I don't believe the 3pm games would diminish attendances at all, look at all the ridiculous other kick off times we have for TV that are a pain for match going fans and those stadiums are still full. Stadiums only have a set capacity and surely every premier league club has far more fans than their grounds capacity so each week a lot of people can't even watch their own team.
If you're for the 3pm blackout, your argument really shouldn't be attendances. There's no real proof to suggest it would harm attendances and most lower league clubs have strong fanbases. The argument should be an over saturation of content, which could make people less interested in watching games. There is actual proof of that happening with the NBA, where League Pass gives you access to every game. Ratings are down, despite social engagement being up.
Back when the blackout was introduced, teams weren't the global powerhouses they are now. Even teams like Brentford, who haven't been in the top league for very long, have global fans. These people want to go and experience a match day but can't because of season ticket holders, the wait list to get one, and overall pricing so if Alan is so worried about the weather, someone else who has traveled can replace them because some rain wont put them off. The PL could benefit financially from TV companies who have bought the rights to air even more games. I don't see how it can cause any harm to the league at all. The demand is there for both seats and screens.
I'm with Gary on the referee question. I come from a rugby background and cannot understand why miking up the referee and having body cam wouldn't work. That way everyone in the ground knows what's happening and hopefully would get rid of some of the vitriol I've heard when I was a steward at a First Division and then founder member of the Premier League club back in the day. I did four seasons and honestly I'd never heard the amount of abuse at rugby games even when I was playing.
3pm blackouts are ludicrous in this day and age. It's honestly an archaic regulation, that needs to be wiped clean. I disagree with Gary's stance on stadiums potentially not being full. Stadiums are full because fans want to go see their team play live, and experience that with their mates and family. It will never compare to watching the game in a pub or at home. What will stop people from going, however, will be rising ticket prices.
Have to disagree with the argument re 3pm blackout. Atmospheres at most Premier League grounds are already depleted by clubs pricing out the core fanbase. Most people can't afford to pay £80 every home game, and so are already finding other means to watch their team. Make tickets affordable and maybe then I would agree
I would like refs to be interviewed so that if they give a dodgy decision one week and then give a complete opposite one the following week, journalists should be allowed to call them out on their bullshit for doing a complete 180⁰ on their initial decision a week prior
To be fair to Newcastle since Howe has come in they have targeted the cups. They haven’t featured a heavily changed side in the cups other than Man U away when they had a lot of injuries. Spurs make too many changes. Agree with Gary, as a club who hadn’t won anything for years like Wigan I’d take a cup with relegation. Whether it be players, fans, managers or owners are we not all in football to win things? Thats why I personally think the Arsenal love in of only winning one cup in 5/6 years is overboard. Man U have been more successful under Ten Haag in 3 years. Yes it’s nice to qualify for the champions league, big nights for the fans and more money for the club but I’d rather win the FA cup than finish fourth and go out in the first stage of the champions league. Priorities are wrong at some clubs.
Gary you're wrong about attendances being down as my family work in horse racing and we were worried when they decided to televise the meetings but the opposite happened. We now live in a multi media society where people like to be seen, so I think it would not effect the attendances.
I can't believe such a video is posted here. To denegrate the achievements of the Toon & national legend that is the great Alan Shearer is just beyond the pale. Alan, don't listen to them or take it to heart. With great achievement, comes great burden. Someone has to be number 1 for goals scored in the PL & you are the chosen one. You wear the crown well. Long may you reign.
The 3pm block out then is creating a false market? Overpricing the tickets making it harder for the normal person to afford a ticket? Also means those who wouldn't be able to afford a ticket anyway miss out for no reason? Also every time a tourist comes, they take the opportunity away for a local to attend? While they themselves probably can VPN watch the game anyway from their own country? But going back to the price inflation, it just means greed? If it's not that then wouldn't the tickets stay as competitive anyway? BTW I'm not from England so I can watch all the matches for $10 aud a month legally as well.... yea it's at shit times for me locally is the only draw back. If your gonna answer some questions like this playing devils advocate both ways would be good.
Only certain teams benefit from tourism. But I agree because there will never be less than 52000 in St James no matter of Time, TV or weather. 100000 people wanting tickets in this city it’s like gold dust getting one
RE the question about teams targeting the cups i agree,Spurs Newcastle even a Brighton or Villa WHY not i’m a 53year old LFC fan and i bought a 2022 FA CUP winners flag because we hadn’t won it since 2006,there’s nothing quite the same as a winning day at wembley
Always find it funny when people say the Prem is more competitive than Bundesliga. Man city have dominated every year and it takes a miracle for anyone else to get top spot.
Think the 3pm blackout opinion is a bit out of touch. As Gary said, the stadiums are always sold out, with people being left out. If it was played on TV the stadiums would still sell out regardless. By they obviously have more insight than us so who knows.
Being a Wigan fan, at the time I wasn’t bothered about the relegation as we won the fa cup and the season after reaching the semifinals from the championship was class. That being said we’ve done nothing since hahahaha
3pm blackout needs to finish and the excuse of diminishing the product isn’t true as the audio is always adjusted on TV hence why the small 10% can always be heard alongside the majority 90%.
I somewhat disagree with Gary and Alan on the 3pm Kick offs. You both were speaking from a very privileged background. The fact that you get to attend games for work purposes. I personally think the ultra fans and season ticket holders will still attend. As a Spurs fan the first season at the new stadium I found it extremely difficult to get tickets for any game. With more televised 3pm games I believe it will give a chance for other fans to see a live game as a one off, maybe be able to take their partner or children. That sadly has been eradicated from this league because of all commercial aspects. You have to remember that there is only 3 stadiums active in the premier league that can capacitate over 60k supporters/fans. P.S Gary if you want to take me as a plus one to a game that would be awesome. It's been over 4 years since I've seen a live premier league game. Seen England during that time but the atmosphere is just not the same. Massive fan of the podcast been listening since the very start. It keeps me going whilst working from home. Sometimes even relisten to previous specials (Shevchencko and Henry)
This one's for all three. Here we go. What's your best football match you've played, me personally I go for England matches then Spain then Argentina then club league games, but Gary was Barcelona you're favourite team or do you think England (The Team) was better for personal appraisal. Alan was Euro'96 your best appearance. Micah do you prefer Manchester City or the team call up.
I said it as soon as Tuchel was appointed (and commented as such on one of these pods) ... he'll not care about player egos, he'll pick the team/squad he feels is needed for the relevant fixtures. Agree absolutely re. getting the ref mic'd up and hearing the discussion at key moments. It works perfectly well in rugby (both codes) and leads to more respect for the refs ... something football players should take heed of. (There's an old cliche ... rugby is a game for thugs played by gentlemen, and football is a game for gentlemen played by thugs)

Yeah it was a ridiculous point. Also not everyone is physically capable of attending in person and they aren’t able to watch live as it is.

Great episode and Great banter as ever between u 3 madheads 😂⚽️😂⚽️😂⚽️
@21:30 😂 Micah never change please
Gary , you are my favorite presenter, I’ll miss you on MOTD.
Gary please ask Alan about his commentary re Liverpool v Barcelona, LIVERPOOL 4 nil. Thanks, love the show.
Shearer was underrated because he was English.
If a Brazilian striker had scored that many goals in the PL he'd be in everyone's all time PL eleven.
I love you three. My first experience watching Gary was the 1990 world cup against Argentina
We never played Argentina at the 1990 WC. You're thinking of 1986 Hand of God goal and all that!
@piersmack72 you're right. Thanks for the correction. Yes it was indeed 86. The first time I watched the world cup.
250+ lucky goals that is some luck
And 30 lucky England goals
Strongly disagree with 3PM blackout. Stadiums are packed during 12:30 games, and 5:30 on a Saturday. Why would it be different for 3pm? Also, non season ticket holders buy tickets in advance, so would go to games no matter what, and season ticket holders have shown their dedication with the initial outlay, thy're going to games. It's Premier League football, people are going to pack the stadiums.
Shearer was a beast of a striker, any team in the world would have wanted him. Shame he never went to United, he'd have won the lot.
Best podcast ever period
The strength of the prem league is all the lower placed teams are strong from top to bottom. Tough games week in week out
3pm blackout is an outrageous hangover. it *might* affect lower league attendances some weeks but it would never harm prem attendances to repeal it. makes a mockery of laws against illegal streaming bc of course you will do it if it is the only way to see your team
Yes Gary
“We are the Caldecote kids, we fight with dustbin lids, We knock em out with Brussel sprouts
, We are the Caldecote kids”
people will always fill the stadiums no matter what. there's nothing better than seeing it live. tickets for matches would probably be more in demand than ever.
I also feel that this would open the door to televised premier league games in different countries. Be careful what we wish for.
Also there is 0 chance that removing the blackout would affect the attendance or international watchers
You got the lottery numbers Nostradamus?
@ yes but won’t share with you
Shearer Henry Rooney
Top 3 prem players of all time
And that's FACT 💯👌😎
Back when the blackout was introduced, teams weren't the global powerhouses they are now. Even teams like Brentford, who haven't been in the top league for very long, have global fans. These people want to go and experience a match day but can't because of season ticket holders, the wait list to get one, and overall pricing so if Alan is so worried about the weather, someone else who has traveled can replace them because some rain wont put them off. The PL could benefit financially from TV companies who have bought the rights to air even more games. I don't see how it can cause any harm to the league at all. The demand is there for both seats and screens.
This is absolutely sensational 😂😂
MOTD loss but we get to see the very best version of Lineker on here 👍👍👍
I would like refs to be interviewed so that if they give a dodgy decision one week and then give a complete opposite one the following week, journalists should be allowed to call them out on their bullshit for doing a complete 180⁰ on their initial decision a week prior
Rub that nose Lineker, make sure it's still there 😅
To be fair to Newcastle since Howe has come in they have targeted the cups.
“Premier league more competitive. “City won like 7 of the last 8. So … same same
They’re been chased to the door the whole way though.
@ Bayern the season before last were chasing Dortmund who choked last day of the season at home.. winning on goal difference
You just don't like pl@@Hhammer
Don't agree with the view of Gary and Alan around fans not attending. All premier league teams (expect city) have huge waiting lists and sold out.
Micah is correct regarding the FA Cup/relegation question. Has Gary forgotten Wigan Athletic?
City are not winning the Prem 9 years out of 10 like Bayern Munich have managed in the Bundasliga ......
You boys are forgetting that Rodri is just a beast of a man. He bullies other midfielders
Hi. Where can I ask a question for one of this episodes?
3pm blackout needs to finish and the excuse of diminishing the product isn’t true as the audio is always adjusted on TV hence why the small 10% can always be heard alongside the majority 90%.
Jokes about Micah's eyesight will never get old 😂😂😂
I somewhat disagree with Gary and Alan on the 3pm Kick offs.
John Terry what a legend
What position do u think Celtic wld finish in the English prem?
This one's for all three.
Here we go.
What's your best football match you've played, me personally I go for England matches then Spain then Argentina then club league games, but Gary was Barcelona you're favourite team or do you think England (The Team) was better for personal appraisal.
Alan was Euro'96 your best appearance.
Micah do you prefer Manchester City or the team call up.
Regarding none cup winning Teams playing weak teams in cups, Levy firing Jose before a cup final.
Sooo good.... a tonic for toxic times!
