- The 8th of July, 2011 saw thousands of people taking a day out to enjoy themselves at the Darien Lake Amusement Park Resort, about 30 miles east of Buffalo in New York state. The park was known to be busy in summer, and famous for rides such as the superman ride of steel. Tragically tafter that day, the park became infamous when the day ended in tragedy as a decorated war veteran was flung from the ride known as the ride of steel. So what happened to Sergeant James Hackemer that day? This is the horrific ride of steel roller coaster disaster.

My dad was told he couldn't ride the Superman for safety reasons, after waiting two hours in line. He said "okay" and walked away. These operators aren't being mean when they tell you no, they're being protective. Just listen to them.
I just witnessed something like this for the first time at six flags a few weeks ago. Someone being tuned away at a ride I was on because she was too big for them to strap her in after trying at least 3 times. The lady walked off upset but for the life of me I couldn't understand why because I'd much rather them turn me away than have my life ended. A 30 second ride isn't worth it.
@@deejames6844 it's not like this should be a shock to someone they're overweight to the point of being unable to ride amusement park rides. unless they have not seen a mirror/below their shoulders in years, if they're unable to ride a rollercoaster I'll go ahead and gaurantee theyve had other "unable to fit here" situations.
how can people act like they're "blindsided" and get pissed when they can't ride something that will probably maim/kill them. I understand being embarrassed but getting angry?
the restraints aren't to feel comfy and look safe, they're there to hold you in the freaking ride! people are so self absorbed and unhinged I can't take it
@@daver00lzd00d They aren’t really pissed because they’re being turned away I think. People like that are pissed because they’re embarrassed. I kinda deal with it myself, though I do my best to mitigate it because I know most people mean well. I’m not overweight, lol, I just deal with the same “mad cause embarrassed” situation.

I was once removed from a wooden roller coaster because I was to big for the lap bar. I was bummed, but I understood. I'd rather not die a horrific and painful death than try to ride a roller coaster I can't fit on.
He wasn't "waved on board" by any means. He was told repeatedly he couldn't go on but he threatened to sue and the young ride operators felt intimidated by him. he basically caused his own death, as sad as that is
You would think just looking at the type of restraints on the ride he would back out at the last minute and go ‘you’re right, I won’t be able to stay in place without a shoulder harness. I’ll pass’.
Maybe theme parks need to put on the front signage exactly what type of restraints they use for each ride.

I'm disabled and I accept that there are some rides I can't go on because it's either not safe for me or it's physically impossible for me to get on and off them. Being disabled or being a veteran doesn't mean you can defy the laws of motion including velocity and acceleration. The park should have had security remove him when he started being belligerent and threatening law suits, sometimes being disabled means accepting your very real limitations and not using your condition to bully people into getting your own way. It's sad he paid the ultimate price but the choice was his and he refused to listen to reason.
Same with myself , as I have scoliosis and on top of that my one side is a few inches higher from this, and I have larger hips then some. So I know there are a lot of rides I’m not able to do. Unfortunately with him having traumatic brain injury, and I know for a fact the drs explained all what can happen to someone with this to his family. They should have been more vigilant about this with him and in all honesty should have done something totally different. But because they chose to ignore this, they knew with the type of injuries he sustained he will no longer able to do these types of coasters and his moods altered for good, and the rational behaviors . Horrible all around

Sadly, in the age of wokeness whoever plays the bigger marginalized victim always gets their way. It is a form of bullying 100%
He basically bullied a bunch of teenagers into forcing him to ride. I feel for the staff having to deal with him. It's easy to say just say no to him online and after the fact, but when you are in front of an older man, yelling at you, demanding to ride because he's a war veteran, teenagers get scared. It's unfair to them, the fellow riders and the people who had to witness this.
I just think you should have more sense and ultimately you have to look out for your own safety. When I saw his picture in the chair I knew exactly what happened. In a dark and twisted humor sort of way I like, sad chuckled. It sucks sure, but I dont think his family should just get money because he took the risk.
Life isn't safe. People shouldn't have an expectation of safety at all times. I could drive my car off the road, burn my house down cooking, or trip and fall down the stairs and die, life isn't safe. Ultimately it is he who is to blame, you gotta be smarter than that. Not everyone is equal, people who are different have limitations.
They wouldn't let siamese twins on this, or someone with 3 arms shouldnt be let on, like, put them aside for the next ride and call a supervisor. Plus it's meant for the average person. If you are only 3/5 of the average person, I'd say you shouldn't ride a fast ass ride and expect not to slip out. I think it's shameful that people get money when this kind of thing happens. But I understand it and might would likely do it myself, greed rules the world. If I died from my arrogance, I would rather Ishoulder the blame if I could choose and if I were honorable. Dude made a big mistake. But I know if a family member passed, I would take the payout in grief which is basically what happened, it's just a very weird dynamic to blame teenagers or anyone but him in my opinion.
They should've made him sign a waiver before being let on. That way the park wouldn't have had to pay off his family.
Anyone who works with the general public may often deal with belligerent people. If someone gets that scared over a customer talking harshly, than they should seek out other employment. The ride operator could have easily called a supervisor, rather than cower behind an argumentative person to their detriment.

I've read about this case, this man bullied his way onto the ride. And I don't think it's fair that his family received a payout over his death.
You never know if the facts in a book or media are truly facts. I will say this though, I've witnessed disabled people being nasty and using their disability as an excuse to be condescending and beligerant. I believe what you say.

I've read/seen videos about it as well, and more than a few said he bullied his way on as well. Working in retail for 18 years, I have seen plenty of bullying by disabled, elderly and healthy custores who know if we try to enforce rules/policies, all they have to do is call the corporate office and they will get whatever they want and our employees will get reprimands.
I haven't worked in retail since 2010, but it is probably even worse now when customers can threaten to post online or UA-cam videos to get what they want or think they are entitled to.

not almost. It doesn't strap your upper body in at all you can see it before you get on the ride and you can feel it before it takes off.

I doubt that he was looking to die when he seemed decently happy with his quality of life. Trust me, I've seen worse qualities of life than his, quad amputees, quadriplegics, people in constant, excruciating pain, the works. I've SEEN true misery. This guy didn't seem to fit the bill for me.
This guy probably just wanted to have fun but ultimately failed to weigh the risks properly and got belligerent with the ride operators when he was initially denied entry.
If he was gonna self-delete, I think he probably would have been a little more private with it, like a gun in his room late at night or something.

The teenage attendants were bullied. They should have called a supervisor.
There's zero chance that he didn't know that a seatbelt wouldn't work on him.
I was at Darien Lake 4 years ago and actually talked to one of the attendants that was there that day. She said that not only was James being difficult but the crowd of people getting on and waiting for the Ride of Steel were chanting "Let him on, Let him on".
She said it was just a messed up situation right off the bat

As a service connected disabled veteran myself…..it’s hard to feel bad for a guy that bullies and threatens his way past the teenage staff to get on the ride. 100% his own fault for being an arrogant asshole.

As a former ride op when I was 18, one of your priorities is to make the guest happy. Him arguing with us scares the crap out of us and of course we get our supervisor to come back us up. But even the sups being threatened of being sued and threatened by a military man it’s pretty hard to keep pushing back when you’re in a in-person real time confrontation with someone that has a culturally much higher authority than you.
It would be like arguing with a cop who thinks he knows better than you even though you’re clearly in the right which is what exactly happened in this case.
I'm also Ride Operator and if someone still would arguing with me who doe'snt have legs or who has something else wich makes it dangerous to be on a Ride, i would call the Security, even if hes from Military cuz the Health of the Guests is very important for me. Sad what happend, i feel bad for his Family and Friends.

@@ZEPTUS47 thank you for injecting some sanity! The guy died but people are so angry with him - I get its hard for employees to argue with a customer but in some cases they need to, and calling security would be so much better for everyone involved instead of letting him ride.
I also feel like if a ride operator feels that any guest might not be safe on a ride should speak up, even if they meet the requirements too.
I was let on a ride at Six Flags a few years back and while upside down I almost slipped out of the seat because I was 4'9 and not even 80 pounds and the harness was useless at keeping me secure. Plus the seat belt was not even tight.
I wish, even if it might have upset me, that the employee raised a few concerns about me riding.

Unlike 99% of the people killed or injured on fairground rides, this guy was clearly not an innocent victim. Might sound harsh but from what I’ve heard of this incident, he comes across as a selfish, self entitled idiot.

He did suffer a traumatic brain injury, so that might be why he behaved the way he did. Brain injuries are no joke and I'm sure he wasn't a selfish idiot before that happened.
That being said, it in no way excuses his actions, it doesn't excuse him for threatening a lawsuit over something so miniscule, and it CERTAINLY doesn't put the park at fault. Like you said, this is the 1% where the park doesn't seem to be at fault in any way, shape or form. And it's bs they had to pay for what happened.

My husband is 6’3 and barrel chested, and he took HIMSELF off a coaster at Six Flags because he didn’t feel confident that the restraint bar was clicked all the way in. This happens occasionally, with the over-the-shoulder restraints.

I’m disabled, and I can deal with not being able to do everything a “normal” person could. Some people are just idiotically stupid. This could’ve been avoided if he would have just let his pride go and stayed off.
I’ve been to Darien Lake throughout my childhood. I listened when ride operators told me I was too short and I went on another ride that was suitable for me as a child. He was arguing to get on that ride and he paid with his life. I’m an Iraq war veteran as well but he bullied the ride operator. He did this to himself.
I'm 4'11", there are rides I'm not tall enough for and that's fine by me.

that man should have never been on that ride. I've been on that coaster dozens of times growing up in the area, the entire system to hold you in on that ride is around your legs/hips there is no over the shoulder harness. just a lap bar with shin holders and a seat belt. sad situation

The employees should have never let him on the ride but they should also go back to using a lap bar as the restraints now ruin the ride one of intamins best layouts
I've been on this coaster as well and must concur. He had no business being on this ride. Seeing how badly six flags is doing these days wouldn't be surprised if we see more horrible accidents like this.

What a sad story. I feel most sympathy towards the people who were at this park/ riding the ride with him and are probably scarred for life now.
Not me. I was there and saw his stupid ass fly out his seat. I laughed my ass off and called him stupid. Even took some pictures too.
And the teens he bellowed at with threats of discrimination if they didn't let him on the ride.
The safety regulations clearly stated that riders needed two legs. Otherwise the seatbelt won't work.
I feel like it’s equal fault here. James knew he had no legs. His family knew he had no legs. The operators could see he had no legs. Someone needed to put their foot down and it clearly wasn’t going to be James. He wanted to get on the ride and he should’ve been turned away. It wasn’t just the legs part but that matters too because the lap bar is ineffective because it’s not holding your legs down. There’s also the height requirement. The park shouldn’t have let him on but he should’ve known not to get on and if he didn’t then his family should’ve known not to.

I've been down a rabbit hole w this case and the employees tried telling him he couldn't get on and him and his family got into a heated argument with the ride operators and the ride operators (being teenagers that were being told they were wrong aggressively) eventually gave in. Def a tragedy none the less but still an important piece to the story since he should've never been let on

The arrogance it takes to insist on getting your way, even when it’s LITERALLY beyond what you can physically do. I feel for his family, and the park, and him, to an extent, because he didn’t deserve it, however much he was unwittingly asking for disaster. These kinds of things really infuriate me. I went to Howe Caverns last year, and a man with serious mental disability, to the point he was in a wheelchair, was brought in by his elderly parents. They were asked if he could walk long distances, because he hadn’t been out of that chair the entire time they’d been there, above ground. The elderly parents assured the workers that as long as there were benches, he’d be fine. Spoiler alert; he was NOT fine. He was so disabled, he really didn’t know where he was, or what was going on. The poor guy’s legs gave out halfway through, way between seats, and his stumble nearly took him over the damn safety railing. The worst part was how utterly nonchalant his parents were about it. Like they expected this to happen, but brought that poor dude down there anyway. They were also pretty damn rude; talking through the guide’s speeches after she asked us all not to at the start. I get wanting to have wonderful memories, but for the love of Christ, keep to what is physically doable. If Howe didn’t have staff elevators and shit, he would have been stuck down there, with no way but for staff to carry him back out. And this was a grown-ass, hefty dude, who did NOT want to move another inch, or be grabbed onto. I’m too small to have helped, and staff was already there, but it KILLED me to walk away to catch up with the rest of the tour. I couldn’t believe how short-sighted those parents were. They could have gotten their son hurt, or even killed, and they hardly seemed to care. CARE FOR those who can’t care for themselves; don’t bring them into danger for your self-centered desire to be SEEN as such wonderful, loving people for taking their mentally challenged son someplace special. You know what? There are plenty of special, wonderful places and adventures, that won’t risk your son’s life! Jfc…

TLDR
I understand that James wanted to live a normal life after what he went through, but surely there are other ways to enjoy life. If he understood that, he'd still be alive. Now his wife is without a husband and his daughters are without a father. It's awful.

Rides have safety rules for a REASON. If you cannot or do not meet the standards of ride safety, you CANNOT RIDE! It doesn't matter what your backstory or situation is. Shame the fact that he was allowed to ride. And screw what the internet or twitter says. Safety is saftey, and it shouldnt be changed

James got belligerent when they told him he couldn’t safely ride, he threatened to sue and bullied them into allowing him on. But what they should have said was: “A lawsuit?? You don’t even have a leg to stand upon.”
How sad. I could never be a ride operator, not with all the things that could go wrong. They aren’t particularly well paid or respected, considering how big a part of the safety they are.
you literally spend 90% of your day sitting and talking and need very little training obviously they aren't gonna get paid... Getting paid requires actually working.
You do it then. You operate a ride.

this is a terrible story and incident. i've watched multiple videos on this and there were always people in the comments and on reports saying that he argued with staff and threatened to sue if they didn't let him on the ride because he was determined to ride the rides. a lot could have been done safety wise on both ends, especially on rollercoasters like this. never be afraid to turn down someone for their safety. very unfortunate for his family and the people around him that experienced that, it's terrible.
I was rather hoping we would get some coverage on the comments because I have seen them as well. Some actually coming from people who reported to be staff members or close friends of them.
This is the first video I've watched on this channel where I don't sympathize with the victim, and more with the ride operators that got shoved under the bus. He ignored multiple warnings and no amount of training can prepare the underpaid operators to handle a situation where someone is aggressively demanding to ride despite warnings. Perhaps they could escalate to ask a supervisor, etc, but the rush and stress of the moment and maybe the possibility of reprimand for delaying the ride made them relent. Still, it was on him to understand the warnings and maybe took it too personal for being denied to ride.
I think there needs to be some rules in parks that the operators can call the security and livk the person out from the park. Better have an angry person (even if they don't realise their life may just been saved) than to feel horrible guilt if someone dies. I really feel for the ride operstors who are put through things like this.

The best advice I ever got after my husband was blinded and had a traumatic brain injury- find your new normal and embrace it!
It not only worked with his accident but 2 years ago I fell in our driveway, became quadriplegic and we both kinda took it in stride.

I suffered a life changing injury and tried to ignore this for several years causing me a lot of emotional trauma. A vicar came to visit me one day from the prison where I had worked and he explained it well. The person you knew has passed away as you will never be the same. You have to go through a period of mourning as with any loss before you come to terms and move on

@@Skaleezay I already had a swollen spinal cord for some reason, and have had really bad arthritis since I was 30 ( I’m 52). I fell backwards, my back landed flat on the driveway but my head was against the house with my chin shoved to my chest. That was enough to break off pieces of C4 and C5.

Statically once you’ve had a traumatic brain injury you are more likely to have another than someone who hasn’t had one. You are more likely to do risky things in general after a traumatic brain injury. . That is why sometimes ppl need to be saved from themselves and told no, in this situation it would have saved his life. I think instead of handing him a safety brochure they should speak to them plus give the brochure before they pay, refuse to understand refuse admittance and put out a warning over radio that the park had an amputee to watch out for just in case. I'm glad you reported everything, that he was highly responsible for it himself, not just the park. They tried to accommodate him and tell him it wasn't a good idea but I suppose he didn't want to admit he couldn't do what he used to (which I can understand, it's awful what happened to him prior to the accident) and the family eventually admitted that. I feel so bad for the family and those who were running it (they will probably always blame themselves for it even if it wasn't the fault of either entirely)
He did it to himself... They only paid the settlement to avoid going to court, can you imagine the bad press they'd get for fighting against the family of "a brave war veteran that nearly lost his life for his country"?

One angry outburst doesn't make someone a bully. Keep in mind he suffered a traumatic brain injury while in a war and probably waited hours in line before being told he couldn't go on the ride. Anybody would be understandably angry, especially somebody who has difficulty controlling their emotions due to a brain injury. You must think quite highly of yourself to go around name-calling dead people. Seems to me the only bully here is you. You're the most cowardly kind of bully, a cyberbully who insults people online from the safety of your house.

if he had a brain injury his doctors would have told him under no uncertain terms that he was not allowed on any amusement park ride whatsoever, so he shouldn't have been waiting in the line for hours in the first place.

The ride operators should have done their jobs and let him know that he couldn't go on the ride, preferably before he spent two hours waiting in line. What I said is that you don't know this man and yet you're calling him a bully and leaving an insensitive comment. Plus he's dead so he can't even defend himself. And he has two young daughters who could be reading the comments to this video. Show some respect ffs.

I used to work at this park back in 2005. I can confirm that not only are safety guidelines posted at the entrance to the ride (and were back then, as well), but after the first incident occurred, a test seat is also set up at the entrance to it. It clearly states riders must have two legs to ride, and from what I know of the incident (keeping in mind I only worked there for the Halloween season of 2005 and all I've heard/seen is hearsay), this was entirely his own fault.
I do really wonder about the family being so willing to allow him on the Ride of Steel, despite him being more vulnerable to design flaws. Incredibly unfortunate death, but so avoidable. He went through so much.
After finishing the video, the Sgt. seemed to be completely aware of the risks involved. Maybe an intentional suicide?

@@foxingratchet this struck me as truth, too, seeing as though he would have been able to provide his family with wrongful death as well as not have the stigma of "mental illness" on top of having the family feel awful after putting all their life's efforts into his survival. It would be hard for others to understand to want to die, especially after so much was given to his survival. If it were me, I'd choose a similar way to go if I chose to depart earlier seeing as though the magnitude of plausible deniability as well as the financial allocation to surviving family members, and the triple whammy of the overwhelming empathy society will provide over such a tragedy.
I actually wondered about suicide too as seems he was really avare of the rules, perhaps he didn't want his family to go through a suicide so staged it as an accident. He went through so much so I understand if he chose this option, the ride operators should have stopped him though.
it’s weird seeing this as a regular at DL. I remember hearing this story as a kid, and being reminded of it often as I grew up and kept visiting the park. we always heard from someone who heard from someone who heard from someone - that he was insistent on being on the ride despite the operators concerns.
there was another accident on the ride early in it’s career, when the rider fell out due to not fitting in the constraints, but he survived. my dad was on the same ride when that happened.
btw - no one local EVER calls it the ride of steel, never have. it will always be the Superman.

As a local myself, and former DL employee, I can confirm it is, and will always be, Superman.
If you’re told no…take that as a blessing that they’re keeping you safe. If the rider can’t accept it, then either have security remove them or have them sign a legal waiver saying they aren’t responsible for injuries or death and the rider takes on all liability.
It's kinda hard to blame some kid working the ride at minimum wage for this. Dude was an adult - he knew the limitations of his condition. It's sad that the guy died but it was his own call. Just looking at how the restraints work should give pause and thought to anybody missing his legs.
As a kid who frequently went to Darien Lake as I was an hour away, I always refused to go on the Superman because I was horrified of having the same fate. Maturing is actually learning about the events and realizing that this was not the fault of the park. I am still a roller coaster fanatic and I realize how safe parks really are and the likely hood of being injured. There are so many regulations and safety precautions that the rate of getting killed is so extremely low. I wish I had known this as a child, but I was misguided by fear.
If anyone could go on any ride by just throwing a tantrum there’d be a lot more amusement park deaths. There are safety precautions and warnings for a reason. I go to Universal Studios Orlando just about every week and see people get turned away almost every time I’m there, my sister was turned away once. Tough stuff, we just went to a different ride 🤷🏽♀️

Honestly, I don't know why all roller coasters of any sort are not required to have over the shoulder restraints. The most secure option ought to be the requirement, instead of going with the cheapest option they can get by with.
I mean, assuming someone is in good health and has all their limbs, there should be no problem. There's a lapbar and seatbelt, so if one fails the other should be enough. I agree with redundancy, because something can fail, but there already was a failsafe in place assuming the passenger has legs. Extra redundancy is probably wouldn't hurt in most cases, but it's also unnecessary. Two forms of adequate restraint should be enough.
Shoulder restraints mean I can't ride. Not joking, I can't get my boobs under them..
Shoulder restraints can prevent many people from riding due to their height or body shape and the point of rides is to thrill and rides with leg/lap restraint have a different vibe to those where shoulder restraint it required (usually for rides that invert).
There was a death on the Superman Man of Steel coaster at 6 Flags New England in Agawam, Massachusetts USA. A special needs person that was way too large to fit appropriately into the seat was sat in the car without the safety belt engaged. A very sad but appropriate story for your channel and your kindness to your subjects.

James killed himself because he wanted to be on the ride more then he wanted to be safe. I am a veteran as well and I feel like he used his status as a disabled vet to bully everyone into getting what he wanted. He got it.
The ride had a lap bar and a lap belt. James had no lap.
I remember hearing about this event as a kid while at a six flags in Georgia. All my cousins were there and it was Kyle the “cool kid” in the family who decided to tell us about this right before our parents let us ride the rides. It really scared us!

He bet against the house and lost and this happens so many times. The world isn’t your caretaker. If you have issues or need special accommodation taking care of yourself is YOUR responsibility. I'd say a majority of the situation was his fault. From what I read he not only argued with staff and threatened lawsuits, but he tried to do the same to the supervisors on duty when they showed up to try and explain. The operator and their supervision were obviously in the wrong for allowing themselves to be bullied into making the call, but the park should not have had to settle with his family over something that for all intents and purposes was a self inflicted scenario.
Great that his family is now taken care of but in no way did they deserve that settlement.

I remember going on this exact ride with a group of friends a few years before this incident. I was pressured to do it and I was absolutely terrified. Nothing bad happened (and I even rode it a 2nd time) but, wow, peer pressure was strong. As an adult, there is no way I’d let anyone pressure me to get back on this or any rides.

If you're body doesn't fit the safety requirements (height - to short or too tall, weight- too heavy or too thin, missing limbs on top or bottom, then for EVERYONE'S safety you should not be allowed to ride.
I very much respect his service to our country. What he went through and survived as a member of the military is a miracle. However, that does not mean amusement parks need to forgo the safety rules.

it's criminal that the corporation that runs the rides allowed, the youngster, who doesn't have the authority to be denying people rides, to take responsibility. But that's how corporate and management teams work. They're the team running YOU.. the employees. They lie to you, and give you a book of policy and procedures that you don't know how to apply. You're in a sink or swim position so you make the easiest call you can make.. let him go. When someone dies due to their negligent practises, they blame you, the operator, who isn't educated or trained enough to understand that you're just a patsy for corporate corruption. There's psychological gaslighting, and there's corporate gaslighing, and this case seems to check all the boxes for me.

I live 30 miles from here and remember this distinctly. He wasnt allowed on several rides and was very belligerent. He was told numerous times that these rides aren't safe for him. Then he went to the ride of steel and belittled the teenager running the ride until the kid relented. I have no sympathy for this guy

I've been to that park and been on that ride before, it's a rough coaster, I can see how someone with no legs can be thrown from it. While your on it, you use your legs to help keep you grounded, by pressing your weight on your feet on the floor, as well as holding the handrail.
It has been mentioned in other videos that he or his friends argued with the ride operators, so while tragic he bears no small amount of responsibility for his own death. The ride operators should have flat out refused to allow him to board.
I was there on a school field trip that day, we got stuck on the lift hill early in the day and had to get off but when we went back later it was shut down with a bunch a cops there. Found out like an hour later what happened, super sad

They did refuse him, several times. But he threatened legal action if he wasn’t let on and probably scared the crap out of the teens. Since they knew he was a vet they don’t want to fight a losing battle since he’s viewed higher in society in respect, so they gave in. Arrogance and lack of consideration of his own doing got him killed.
They said no and he threw a tantrum and threatened to sue. He was a giant man child about it and yelled at actual teenagers to get his way, but no one likes to mention this because it won't paint him a victim.

Ok but why doesn't this ride have an over the shoulder harness? Even for an able-bodied person this ride too high and too fast to be safe with just a lap belt and bar. Crazy...
The ride doesn’t have any inversions so over the shoulder restraints are unnecessary. I’ve been on the same style of ride at six flags New England, and the current lap bar design is fine. Never once have I felt unsafe or unsecured. I could barely lift my legs a centimeter off the ground. This man should NOT have been on this ride and I struggle to feel bad for him when it’s reported he argued to be let on until ride operators gave him. He barely had 1 thigh so there’s no way he felt secure in the restraints and should have asked to be let off before the train left the station.
Just three days ago, my eldest (17) and i were in line for a roller coaster at our local amusement park. They had a recorded announcement playing every minute or so and i heard "all riders must have both natural legs and at least one functioning arm to ride Lightning Run". So that led to a conversation on what could have prompted that. Now i know. This channel also answered son's question of what happened to make them put notices saying not to stand up during the ride on a couple of the other coasters.
I went to Darien lake the day after this… the boarder cop asked why we were coming to the states and then asked if we heard about this… I said ya and I would NOT be going on that ride, he said “… but you have legs” he was right. I did have legs.
Isn't there also rules for height as well, so having no legs would make you well under the requirement. Or was he wearing his fake legs and then took them off?
My buddy was pretty short back in HS when we went so don't think the height requirement is super big. and only really from your waist down really matters. Upper torso length wouldn't help anything.

just a little correction from a local. the park is in Darien, not Corfu. that's why it's called Darien Lake. Corfu is decently far away.
I feel sad for his family, but safety rules are there for a reason. I heard an overweight person give hell to an 18 year old operator once because he wasn't able to get the safety harness down far enough for it to be safe (Had to be at the third click but could only get to the first one) and the lady was screaming at him that he was fat shaming her. I was overweight and I wasn't going on the ride ,I was just waiting with friends who wanted to ride it and i am the one who spoke up because the ride operator couldn't without losing his job. Besides, it's hard to tell someone who's fatter than you that she's fat shaming you. I told her the truth that yes, she WAS too fat to ride, and to either do the responsible thing (like I was) and NOT ride, or lose weight, simple as that. It was a matter of making sure she stayed alive. She spit in the kid's face and went away. I can't understand people like that...

yeah a ton of other comments pointed this out but from the actual records he threatened and intimidated the employees until they let him on, refusing to obey safety regulations. i don't blame the employees for giving in when a military veteran pulls that status and threatens to sue or get you fired or what have you. this was not the employees' fault.
To me, I know it's sad, but there's no reason that amusement park should have to pay out. This man willingly went on the ride, knowing he had no legs.

It’s never fair to be yelled and screamed at for something that is right. I’m a 19 y/o food service worker and I know the feeling.
But I also know that you can’t sustain a traumatic brain injury of that scale, and come out of it the same person. He may well have been a very kind man in his previous life, but after something like THAT, needing to re-learn basic aspects of human life, there’s no way he wouldn’t also have to re-learn his personality and etiquette.
I don’t feel empathy for him because what he did was wrong and absolutely contributed to his own death. But I do feel sympathy, because he was clearly horrendously changed by his war injuries.
Horrible decision by him resulted in a horrible accident and death.
Knowing that I rode this same ride just the one in Maryland thank God really making me rethink these roller coaster rides

What on earth does a photo of Manhattan have to do with Darien Lake? It's about a 6 hour drive between those two points. Imagine doing a story about Newcastle and then showing a photo of the Tower Bridge.

Very sad story, sensitively told - theme parks sometimes bring out the irrational side of park guests. Perhaps it should be standard practice for parks to have a special manager available on site to handle a situation where a patron with a physical difference or size insists on riding a ride that does not accommodate them. The patron may already feel vulnerable and defensive, then things can escalate further if he feels disrespected by staff. Involving a high level manager with a kind but authoritative manner could quickly diffuse the situation and help parks avoid accidents and lawsuits. Something similar to high level airline staff who are trained in similar kinds of temper-diffusing situations.
