I totally agree. They knew they couldn't do better than the 2007 anime, so they directly make it waaaaay too simple and cartoonified, like "Oh well let's go, it will pass because we are a new version, and new versions and remakes are always liked by spectators, whatever new version it is !" (Sorry for my english.)
People saying they like the look of the 2007 version, should realize that the 2007 is an OVA, thus it had more money and time, also it only covers the story up to approximately ep 5 ( right after the first piano competition ), or book 5 of the manga. It's not that the 2018 couldn't do it better, but when you're working with time and budget constraints, you don't have the luxury of making it perfect.

I'm guessing you've found it on UA-cam by now. I looked all over for it as well, until i discovered someone posted a very high quality upload for which I will be eternally grateful.
Didn't know there was an older version! Plus the 2007 hair animation looks better than the 2018 cartoonified look lol
