Great video as the proud owner of a 1947 cj2a I always tell everyone you got to love them to drive them. Lucky for me I live in an area when I want to drive it I never have to go over 35. Enjoy it and thanks for posting.

yeah, my old 2a runs about 47.5:1 on low gear, low range. They're incredibly low geared. The one thing you have to watch is that they're also weak on the drivers-side rear axle shaft on the OEM unit. Don't use 4wd on dry pavement. Things tend to bind.
Also be careful taking it to tire shops if you've got oem lugs/nuts. Some people can't figure out left hand thread.

Mate...you need to get your brakes sorted !! I don't know if your eccentrics aren't adjusted properly, your drums are worn out or your shoes are undersized but your Jeep should stop and if anything, would lock up the rear wheels. Also...40 mph is pretty average, I know guys like Lew Ladwig who have driven their G503's up to 65mph and the things hummed along like a lady at a sermon...happy and in tune!!
I strongly suggest going over your brakes, getting oversized pads put on the shoes and machined to the drum after checking and matching them too...make sure they're not already been machined over spec. You should be able to lock up the brakes when you hit them, that's the whole reason they put the torque reaction springs on the G503's later in the war.

I've got a '46 and couldn't agree more on how inadequate the breaks are.

Nice video! Two questions if you dont mind: are you double clutching on the downshift to 1st? Did you spend a lot of time tuning the brakes? Rumor has it that they can do ok if really dialed in. I'm just about to try running a cj3a (at last) and am pregaming driving technique.
Thanks for watching! I did spend a ton of time adjusting these to even get where I was - and it was ALL NEW parts!! I'm not saying it can't be done but it was so frustrating.
Since this video I have added 4 wheel disc brakes and it's the best thing I could have done. The Jeep is SO much more driveable, I wish I would have done it up front! I can actually stop VERY fast w/o having to downshift!

All you need to install an overdrive and you will go 65 plus like mine.

@@JeepsOnTheRun The Warn / Saturn OD is a wonderful addition. It provides 25% reduction across all ranges.
Jus be sure to get one with the same spline count as the PTO output gear of your T-case.
If your Willys is trying to kill you, don't take it hard. They just do that to remind you that you're alive! One sits _on_ an early 'Jeep' rather than _in_ one.
