I was born and raised in southeast Indiana. My grandparents home all part of the Underground Railroad. A code about the Youth of the lanterns. One Lantern meant one thing two lanterns was something else, can't remember the story unfortunately. I do remember the fascinating stories about the features that were built into the home. There were hiding spaces all throughout the house. Thanks for sharing and keeping history alive.
Howdy brother- great video! Yes, the logs will speak to you when you disassemble a log building. When I took the Chism house apart I found some interesting things. Thank you for sharing the story. God bless
Still in the process of catching up on videos, but still like to space things out a bit. Funny thing, in 2014-15, my husband and I built a cedar cabin on a 100 acre, riverfront lot in northern Quebec. We actually installed an escape hatch 😄 Another thing we did was build in a removable stair tread for valuables in our tiny winding staircase. Sadly, after the events of 2020 and being blocked from travel outside of N.S., we decided it was too much of a financial burden so sold most of the property, including the cabin. It was the right decision but we had put our hearts and souls into every inch of it and that still stings. Only material though, just as happy to have our health and each other … and of course our 2 rescue dogs! Brenda & Yves
As a suggestion put a handle in the middle of the removable board so you can hold it down and put some felt on the bottom so your stretch marks will not reveal it over time ;)
I'm working on the inside door latch, and a treasure chest. I'm going to try to use my homemade damper (that did not work) for my indoor latch. The treasure chest will be called things to improve upon, you can do better than me. I'm just a old methodist granny who loves learning.
As a builder/designer, I have installed many secret passages in homes. Some were behind false walls, bookcases, behind closets, etc. I won't divulge my own passages, but I will say that I can travel from my cabin to the blacksmith shop, the big barn, the main root cellar, the wood shop, and several dugouts, without exposing myself. Nothing is as it seems.
Great story Jerry. Feel free to leave out explanations just to please the nayers. Thats valuable time you dont need to waste. Im no sweep or oleary. But my collection and passion for cast iron, cookstoves and lanterns and anything pioneer is growing. One day I will be wrapping a nice old cabin around that collection. Enjoying the content of your channel. Cheers from the North. Ontario Canada
Pretty cool. I live in mid north west ohio and tunnels ran through the town as part of the underground railroad. Some have been filled in. Still have a few left though.
I live in Cincinnati, and my friend growing up lived in a really old house they were renovating. They found a room hidden in a wall with notes, old news papers, dolls and all kinds of stuff. Turns out it was part of the underground railroad. Was pretty cool. :) We used to play in there.
Welcome! Yes! The trap door that I put in is the original that I found under 3 layers of flooring. It was in the kitchen area in an area that a kitchen table would have been. It’s the reason I installed it.
Can you explain what is "safe" and the reasons you have the basement fire place and maybe a diagram of how it is all intertwined! What the structures engineering support calls for to make it safe? I want to build and I thought the way you have yours now is where the first stages of the build would begin. Footer, fireplace footer, beefy basement fire place, main level fire place, loft fire place. All in one? Plus,, a side wood kitchen stove vented through.
First, what is safe. When I am at work that is a word you don’t use, because what might be safe to one person might not be safe be pending on how a different person uses it. As fare as the fireplace in my basement it’s not a fireplace. Just Support for the upstairs fireplace. I’m going to put shelves in it for can goods. As far as a structures engineer I’m thankful that my area doesn’t require that I need one. In most parts of the country you would not be allowed to build a fireplace like mine. Not because it’s not safe but because an overpaid engineer said you can’t. I can tell you this. Lots can be learned by picking up a copy of the NFPA 211. It’s overkill but will keep you safe. To get started though. If possible get to bedrock but that’s not always possible. Sometimes that can be thousands of feet. If not a chimney must be on untouched soil. So below the overdig or floor. Each of the fireplaces must have their own flue. They can’t be together. I hope that helps in some way.
@@logcabinlifestyle Awesome! I am in the geo-center of Ohio. So I truly do not like the overpaid engineers and all the hands stuck out in line wanting paid before you even start thinking about wanting a structure on your own property. Not to mention after you start! That's all I gotta say bout that! So ultimately buy land where you do not have that hanging over your head. Thank you! Stay safe, warm and healthy! We are covered in a good layer of snow here now!
It is just starting to rain here. If you need any other help planning feel free to reach out. Also I have a video called fireplace talk. It will really help with numbers. Sizing and why
Really cool idea and something folks should consider on their builds. History has a way of repeating itself. Cheers!
Yes it does!

Nice share my friend
Thank you
That's a neat idea there eh! I may try to incorporate that in my cabin build, like to have it go into a root cellar... thanks for sharing
Your welcome. That part my my basement will also be a root cellar. I want to grow mushrooms down there
Good idea . God Bless !!!

You have a very inspiring channel
Thank you!! It means a lot to me
That's awesome!
Hi Jerry! I live in Lisbon too. 😀 I’m curious, do you think there was a trap door in the cabin as it sat originally? Love watching your UA-cam videos!
Welcome! Yes! The trap door that I put in is the original that I found under 3 layers of flooring. It was in the kitchen area in an area that a kitchen table would have been. It’s the reason I installed it.
Verrrry cool! I like it much better by candlelight 😆 Would make for a fantastic root cellar! 🤩
Thank you! It will be and kinda is now. Just not much room because I have so much stuff.
Very interesting.
Awesome story and video...but...be careful with that Electric Bike...there's a video going around of one catching on 🔥...
I don’t have it anymore. I gave it to a kid that needed more than me
