Jerry , as a senior and probably your mom's age there is so many things we have seen and experienced in our youth, and these are the things you are sharing. Seasoning cast iron is so important and yet so easy if you know how it is done. Thanks.
People living life this way kept them focused on only the important things. Growing up in the60's and 70's All I can remember is 19 cents per gallon of gas and watching my favorite cartoons riding my Schwinn Stingray helping my uncle build his 64 corvette race car. back then a 10 second car was pretty fast. I'm retired now and have some property in a great place. So I'm selling my house in California giving me plenty to have a 500 SF cabin installed. and then the fun begins. Anxious to get started ASAP. I have a well and a stream near by and the closest neighbor about a 1/4 mile down the hill. hunting will be my main protein and will try out gardening. either way I have a smile from ear to ear just thinking about the new start in my life. I'm glad to have found your channel. It warms my heart learning from you and others. Thank you. Time to find a nice old school stove for cooking and heat. of course I will have back up heat sorces and the cabin will have a small fire place. time to find some old school pans etc. sorry for long story just happy to start a new and healthier lifestyle. this country has been corrupt for to long and just hoping all ends well. god bless
Just recently found your channel so lots of catch up to do. My husband and I totally agree with your concepts and unique lifestyle. Not sure why some people, ourselves included, seem to encompass such old souls. Many admire the ‘simple life’ but few venture into it. Our smallish seaside UNESCO town, settled in 1753, Lunenburg, N.S. is a prime example. People come here, love the old time quaintness, move here and gut every old house they buy, then brag about the old character they retained … perhaps one old pine floor in an upstairs bedroom, everything else is pristine and new. For our part, and a bit further afield we found an old house from 1771 still about 70% original. Needs work of course but has managed to survive a few centuries fairly intact. If it weren’t for us, the previous owner had plans of gutting it. We’ve filled it, to the best of our ability and very limited budget, with period style but also useful items and like you, repurpose anything we can …. got quite a collection of discarded goodies! There’s a coziness one can’t quite explain that comes with old and sometimes ‘rickety’ furniture : )). There’s nothing wrong with being clean but most people have become obsessed with sterility, so afraid to dig in and get their hands dirty. Not only that, few have any skills at all. The only reason we can live here at all is because we do every last thing ourselves. My husband is just now closing in on the rebuild of an 1810 post and beam structure (18’x40’)’ It originated in Maine. We even have a book it is pictured in by Wallace Nutting. We only had the beams which weren’t even numbered by it’s up. We’re using it as a workshop, art studio (carving, marine artwork) and general relaxation … although we don’t have much time for that! We are 64 and 60, in great health but as you say, on the other side of our existence. We’re discouraged with the way the world is headed but very thankful to be at home every day enjoying the life we have eked out for ourselves. We may not be rich monetarily but we are certainly rich in our simple and rewarding lifestyle. It’s great to watch someone else who thinks and works the same as we do. Brenda & Yves 🇨🇦 Long comment eh!
Howdy brother- you have a really nice collection of cast iron. I don’t cook in anything else except for one skillet that my wife uses. My Mom gave me all of her Griswold skillets. Some of them were my grandparents skillets so they are pretty old. Love my cast iron! Hope you have a great weekend. God bless
I would love to see the factory seasoning process. I love seeing my 13yr old son cook eggs and bacon on an old cast iron pan in 2022. I try to expose him to as much of the old style way off life as I can. My wife and I moved away from non-stick pans about 10 yes ago and went to stainless. Then about 5 years ago I bought a lodge cast iron pan and we haven’t looked back. We still have a couple of the stainless pan set that we bought siting in the cabinets. But the cast iron pans get used every day. One thing we have noticed is because we use cast iron so much we usually leave one or two skillets sitting right on the stove and when friends come over they spot them and it instantly starts up a conversation about them. I had a HVAC salesman at the house the other day and he mentioned seeing one sitting on the stove and it sparked a story from when he was young at his grandparents house. So since then I have decided to put a nice cast iron decorative hook on the wall and just hang one right there.
Great idea!! At the factory it’s not quite like this at all. Mostly because of the rough surface of the modern cast-iron. It makes it so the oil sticks easily. It just oil and bake one time I’m sure
I love your personality, man. I can completely relate throughout your whole video. I can tell I will be binge watching your videos. As I am in my own home. Seasoning my own cast iron skillet. With my puppies right by my side. And a squirrel in the fridge. Getting ready to cook tomorrow evening. In the cast iron skillet.
Excellent! Nicely explained: I've tried to season pans before, but with only middling success and now I think I understand 😏 And new pans rarely come with proper instructions on what to do! And really agree with your comments about life/living/age... 👍
Jerry- my eyes are glazing over at the sight of so much cast iron! I would pick out a couple corn stick pans and a dutch oven. I'm not strong enough to pick up that huge griddle or the giant kettle :-O. My 12'" fry pan is my limit, but I enjoy using it all the time, especially for baking powder biscuits. Nice you can dry them out in the fire place and then season. Lard would be my choice. Thanks for taking us along.
Hard work can be so satisfying....to do a hard days manual work is both good for the body and the mind and you get to sleep like a baby! I too love the old ways away from this crazy 1000 mph life style that has us all hood winked into believing it is better than what we had not too long ago.
My mother would pick up iron skillets out of yards that people didn't want and build a fire and season them like you do !! I have them now and use them !! Great video and a good reminder as I have a couple to work on now !! Love your cabin and I would love to have that big trivet you are using !!Lavender is a sweet girl !!
Buddy you do a fantastic job, you don't ramble on with nonsense. Your straight forward. Very knowledgeable. My father and I built a cabin this spring and summer. We basically just winged it with the knowledge we had from building our house, barns and we watched a few videos. We cut all our trees from our property. Had a small sawmill. It's done now. But I'm thinking about putting a fireplace. Id really like one set up like yours. Its a huge project for me. I've done very little masonry work. My cabin is 15 x24. How big would I need the fireplace to be? If you just used the cabin casually which would you do. Wood burner or fireplace? Just wanted to compliment you but ended up bothering you with questions that you probably already have in your videos. Wished all the videos were like yours. Id like to share my build with you. I'll try and upload a good video and show you my father's and I build. But thanks for the fantastic videos
Sorry it took so long to get back to you. It’s been a busy week. I love an open fireplace but if it gets too cold it’s hard to get a lot of heat out of them.
Thank you Jerry for sharing. I wanted to share a cool thing I seen in this video that I’m not sure anyone else has. At time slot 13:32, I seen a face in the fry pan. Along with the two men upstairs inspecting your fire place, you have someone with you at breakfast.
Love the video - just found your channel - lots to watch and catch up on! I have to tell you, that table is BEAUTIFUL!! I am hoping to build a big table for my wife on the spring - I would love to know the story of yours! Keep up the great work!!
Thanks for the Vid! Keep forgetting that Ohio was once the frontier. Keep on keeping on, but don't forget that Jersey was once beautiful as well (ie The Pretenders: My city is gone).😉
Just found your channel last week absolutely love it seen a lot of your videos I am building something very similar myself and I have took away a lot of good points fantastic build who needs a TV when you have a open fire I wish you all the best Richard from over the pond in the UK
I love pork fat as a seasoning on my cast iron. However, the bad thing about lard or bacon fat is that if you don’t use the skillet it often, it will go rancid fairly quickly. Cast iron I keep in storage or don’t use often I season with shortening.
Thank you for sharing. I learn alot the techniques. BTW how do you clean the bottom pan. The black come from smoke or fire. I hope you understand what I mean.
I was just searching your videos to see if you had one to look at your cast iron. We only use cast iron and I like my stainless revere ware. I use Crisco to season mine. I don't like how oil makes it sticky.
When I was a kid my mom used to throw our cast iron in a fire to clean them. I could imagine that would work for them. And then clean them well with sand paper and reseason them. It is a little risky but I believe it would work
Hi Jerry, I have a cast iron pot I use on top of my cast iron wood stove for heating the house, I just have water in the pot for humidity. How often should I be seasoning the pot?
Sometimes I scroll through with the volume silenced. Im not listening , i am watching. I think those cast iron pots and pans could ech serve as a year on a wood stove. The perhaps put into a small camp stove. A spring summer fall of warmth with gods creation. He made humans in a climate to withstand heat, just don't forget the WATER WELL. HAVE A BLESSED DAY.
Good morning. I want you to live a long happy life so here is some honest Motherly advise. Build a greenhouse with sunlights in the rooftop. Build a beautiful natural lighting throughout the day ..Build a beautiful bedroom with denim for blankets and 100%cotton sheets, pillowcases, easy to wash and dry on the clothesline for that scent of fresh air. Do not put a (soot) fireplace in you new improved and healthier air. Fireplaces are beautiful. The flames of fire are warm and captivating. I love the warmth. I also love the warmth of the sun. Make your green house a safe haven for your lungs. As the seasons change you might choose loft through the wintertime for your warmth. I just don't want that lung cancer to consume you. You have (seemingly) many good qualities to share with the world. Put your favorite living plants inside too. A bit of motherly advise. Sweet potato vine.
So do you notice much of a difference with Wagner versus Lodge? Debating if I should find some Wagner pieces at the antique mall or just order more of the Lodge wildlife collection. I know a lot of people sand their lodge down but I just hate the thought of ruining a cast iron pan even if it was fairly cheap.
I don’t think there’s a huge difference as far as using them however most of mine are antique Wagners, and some like the large one unknown. I have sanded down a few for people as well. I don’t think it’s necessary
Love your stuff. New subscriber here. I did cringe a bit watching you scrape that newly reseasoned cast iron with a metal spatula. It's probably fine if you're careful, but I've seen people gouge cast iron and ruin it. There is no fixing gouges and deep scrapes.
Jerry , as a senior and probably your mom's age there is so many things we have seen and experienced in our youth, and these are the things you are sharing. Seasoning cast iron is so important and yet so easy if you know how it is done. Thanks.
Thanks Teri! Probably not my moms age. She’s 87. Going to have coffee with her shortly

I cleaned up some bad ones by putting them a self cleaning oven. it was amazing how they came out.

I would just do it the same way. It should clean up easier than the inside
Harika video icin teşekkürler. Kanalıni yeni keşfettim. Türkçe altyazı eklermisiniz. İngilizce bilmiyorum. Türkiyeden sevgilerle
Let me do some research and see how to do that. I’m not real familiar with how.
Good video
I was just searching your videos to see if you had one to look at your cast iron. We only use cast iron and I like my stainless revere ware. I use Crisco to season mine. I don't like how oil makes it sticky.
I use konola oil, one coat and oven cook it at 500 for one hour. works great on my 16 hundred and 17 hundreds ironware. I collect all things colonial.
My mother had some cast iron kettles that she spray painted black and used outside is there a way to get them back to where they can be used for food?
When I was a kid my mom used to throw our cast iron in a fire to clean them. I could imagine that would work for them. And then clean them well with sand paper and reseason them. It is a little risky but I believe it would work
Hi Jerry, I have a cast iron pot I use on top of my cast iron wood stove for heating the house, I just have water in the pot for humidity. How often should I be seasoning the pot?
If your just using it for moisture in the air don’t worry about it. It’s almost impossible to keep it seasoned anyway because of the water.
@@logcabinlifestyle ok thanks Jerry, and thanks so much for the speedy reply! :)
Do you season the outside of the cast iron pan as well?
You can but if you do it’s only for looks. I cook on an open fire a lot and don’t normally worry about the outside
Sometimes I scroll through with the volume silenced. Im not listening , i am watching. I think those cast iron pots and pans could ech serve as a year on a wood stove.
