The part that bothers me about the whole rape situation is the way Julia Quinn tries to justify it. She does acknowledge the change in attitudes over the past two decades, but she also really minimized it in a recent interview by making it about Daphne fighting back against the patriarchy or something weird like that? Like, Daphne’s clearly not the oppressed party in this situation, even if she is in a general sense in society, especially if she’s taking advantage of her husband’s vulnerability. I’m so glad to see so many calling it out, especially for what the scene and her comments and those of other apologists for the scene says about what a victim of sexual assault is meant to look like.
I don't think Daphne knew what she did was wrong. she doesn't even understand sex let alone sexual assault. This is one of the reasons why sexual education so important people need to understand boundaries
@@niyah7139 I wish it was framed that way. But instead it’s more like “she did what she had to do” from the author and the denial that it was rape from many fans, due in part to the gender thing. I think it’s perfectly possible for both to be wrong, and for neither Daphne nor Simon’s actions to absolve the other’s, yet when even the author doesn’t see it that way? 🤦🏻♀️
I totally agree with you regarding to Daphne forcing on Simon while he was drunk. Even in the show, Simon got mad about that, she ignored it and kept complaining about him lying. Also the ending is so suddenly, I don't get how Simon could change his mind all in a sudden, then have a child with Daphne, Daphne didn't really do much to convince him but just say I understand you, you will not be like your father... What?!
Exactly! That was my main annoyance and how she got no repercussions for what she did! It kind of made it seem like what she did was ok, when it definitely was not!
Yea they handle that whole non consensual thing differently in the show. 1. He doesn't know what the maid told her cuz she didn't confront him yet so she also doesn't know his reasons 2. It was very much consensual at first, he initiated it 3. she eventually takes over and when he's close she keeps going when he trys to stop it from... happening 4. they argue about him lying to her after that since he realized what she did and she realizes what the maid said was true Still not right on both sides but easier to swallow then her just straight taking advantage of her drunk husband knowing how he felt about it. Wouldn't be ok if the roles were reversed so idk how Daphne thought she did nothing wrong 🙄
Being completely honest I watched the show first so I initially wasn't that shook by the whole interaction but the second I read the book it changed how I saw that scene in the show and I realized that yea the show did it significantly better but its still not ok and it bothers me that it took me reading the book to notice and it's concerning that other ppl will have the same initial reaction
@@kevinkelly_ well they couldn't really keep it out completely because then they couldn't do the whole 'is Daphne pregnant?' drama afterwards. But the show definitely toned it down and made it seem much more consensual and like something bad Daphne did.
@4Freedom4All regardless of the period, its still rape. People in the past weren't as enlightened as we are now, but this book was written in a time when the author should have known better. Simon was drunk and unconscious when Daphne initiated sex, and neither drunk people NOR unconscious people can consent to sexual intercourse. If someone doesn't consent to sex, and you still have sex with them, it's rape. There's no grey area on this topic.
I'm so glad that I´ve finally found someone that agrees with me about this book. Personally, I love this kind of books, and I was loving the story until I got onto that part. I couldn´t believe what I was reading, as you said it was uncomfortable and disgusting, I totally think it was rape and I felt so annoyed when everything ended in a happy ending. I'd then lost all interest in continuing reading the books, and just thought "why?" when heard about the show being produced. Finally, a friend of mine watched and I asked her about that scene and she told me they changed it so I decided to give it a go. I really enjoyed the show and the scene is still not 100% ok but much better than the book.
Glad to know it’s better than the book but they should have just removed that scene completely 🙈
“ like we don't see people call someone a shovel , like , Oh my god you're such a shovel” 😂😂 it’s 4 a.m. and I laughed so loud . pretty sure i woke my parents
You made me want to read and watch Bridgerton! :)
I just finished reading "To All The Boys I Loved Before" and I loved it! However, it makes me feel single😂
Mood!
I LOVE BRIDGERTON !❤️😍🤩🥺And I’m so sad that the second season will come until next year 😭❤️😂 so I’m Germany 🇩🇪🥲😂🤷♀️💙💖 I watched the series it’s just...👌❤️I would like have the book 📖 maybe I get it in the next weeks 😊 do u know Julie and the Phantoms ? 😃🤔😘 do u have a new IPhone ? 🥳😋😱🤪🤗beautiful phone case 🥰
Now I have the book 📖🥳🥳🥳
You should make a video of you watching the show! I'd love to see your reaction!!!
I've read so many historical romances now that rake is, like, every main character, but at the beginning I could only think the same as you, I imagined rakes holding lady's hands 😂😂
Right! 😂
I was DYING when you couldn't figure out what a Rake is. XD
The tv series is better because you get a bit more of other characters and it sets up their stories nicely.
I was so confused 😂😂 Ooh ok that’s good to know!
I’m reading Simon vs the homosapiens agenda this month for the first time!!!! I know you love it so much so I can’t wait!
Omg I hope you love it!!!!!
I just read it last week, its really good
Honestly I watched the show and I didn't really like the romance and after that scene really didn't like Daphne, so I skipped the fist book and read Anthony's Colin's and Benedict's books. I really enjoyed the second book in the series maybe you could check it out💓
"It's the rejection for me "😂😂😂 yo, that's gross
I don’t know why I found the rejection so funny! 🤦🏻♀️
@@kevinkelly_ "He really woke up that day and chose death." 🤣🤣🤣 I'm dead
💛 The show's definitely better and I enjoyed the other books in the series more too. I think with what they did for S1 Netflix I think they'll be making improvements on books 2-8 as well as they're by no means unproblematic; though less so than Bk1
Benedict & Eloise are my absolute favorites from the TV show!! I haven't read any of the books, but I love the show so much!!! 😆🙈
They both were barely in this book 😩 I heard so much about Eloise after I finished reading and I was like? Since she’s like absent in the book!
We love Alexa, always there in our time of need
Truly! She’s a queen!
Kevin seems to have forgotten that Edward from twilight was referred to as "shovel face"
Unrelated to the book, but when you said Alexa, mine went off lollll ❤️
Omg I’m sorry!!
@@kevinkelly_ no need to be sorry, I don’t know why, but I found it hilarious. Good thing I love Driver’s License
I never really had the desire to watch Bridgerton or read the book, but I’m so intrigued now
From what I’ve heard, I would suggest sticking to the show!
@@kevinkelly_ After watching the video, I’ll definitely check out the show, this is also first instance of a tv show or movie being better than the book
Oh Kevin 😭❤️ you’re such a delight
You’re so sweet 🥺❤️
You should read Outlander now.
Omg maybe but those books are so long omg 🙊
the second one and the fourth one are best, that ones are my favorites, please read them
Ok noted!
I tried to give this book a chance but the writing... dear god. I enjoyed the show (despite the historical inaccuracies) even though it had a few problematic moments.
I'm dying at you're face when you googled rake.
😂😂😂
The other books from the series are better than the first, also the first season helps buildup and has easter eggs for the next season(books)
The rest of the books is awsome and my favorit one is the Discovery of miss whileblow and the romance with Colin.
