"SUPERFREAK" KING PALM

- Look at this gorgeous King Palm I found growing in Downey California! It has massive proportions in head size and trunk diameter rivaling a Royal Palm. But the most unique feature of this tree is its upright non drooping frond structure and stiffness of its petioles. This lends a very unique look as it maintains its foliage to a horizontal inclination. A side by side comparison of regular King Palms shows off how much more beautiful this strain is. This stiffer frond structure should be more resistant to physical desiccation from persistent wind which often is a problem of this species. I have always collected seed from superior King Palms to grow in our nursery and will now add this to our offerings. We will call this palm Archontophoenix cunninghamiana 'SuperFreak' as it very much embodies one of my favorite songs.
If it is a hybrid it would be a fine example of “hybrid vigor”. This video was shot in 2018 and it’s 2021, do you have any updates on the seedlings? Do they show the same traits as the parent?
That looks like my king palm it’s trunk is huuuugggeeeee I love to collect the seeds I’m selling them up here in Sonoma counties in California 🤗
Send me some pics! gary@goldengatepalms.com
@ScaryHairyGary - Did you ever get closer to identifying this Archontophoenix 'Superfreak'? Archontophoenix maxima or Archontophoenix alexandrae 'Beatriceae' or Archontophoenix 'Teracarpa' (a similar palm sold by Jungle Music)
Could it be a Maxima?
Definitely is with those big ribs
Do you think it might be a Arnhontophoenix alexandrae?
Gary, it has been just under 2 years since you made this video. Do you have some of these trees that you planted from seeds still available? Beautiful tree!
little baby seedlings so far only. None for sale yet.
Damn Gary you really get around. I work in Downey, going to have to keep my eye out to see that tree. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you. That's a well earned title.
Is it a Bangalow palm?
Very impressive King! I have Alexandrae King palms that are much younger and smaller than that palm but have similar stiff upright leaves(perhaps not quite as upright). There is also what appears to be a common King in my area that is even more upright which like Gary states in the video leads me to think it could almost be a hybrid with Rhopalostylis.
James Bandazewski Archontophoenix and Rhopalostylis aren’t capable of hybridizing. DNA is too different.
Those poor Phoenix robellenii are way over trimmed.
