That is directly and specifically why I keep watching Dr Felton's pieces he regularly posts. Informative, sure, entertaining in production values equally so, but best of all it lacks inane flash, flair, pomp, and drivel loaded fluff to pad out a 44min spot (to 1hr w/commercials) for something like the History Channel would have done like what... 15-20 years ago?

@TheMilk Trafficker Don't drink the Koolaid and don't push it on other people. Total number of murders under the fascist powers were nigh incalculable. During all the years of Stalin's time: just under 800k executions which includes all the regular executions of murderers and rapists in prison as well. That is under 800k spanning decades that included civil war, Tsarist and Nazi sympathizers, sabotage by petit-bourgeois factions within the Soviet gov't, multiple foreign invasions, assassinations of top Bolsheviks, etc. Meanwhile per capita income, education, average calories consumed, literacy and higher education, women's rights, ending pogroms in the countryside and making anti-antisemitism a crime, etc. (i.e. every single metric of improvement one would consider if they wanted to actually make an objective analysis and not just parrot fascist/CIA propaganda) were drastically improved. Collectivization actually ended common famines rather than caused them as the propaganda reports. The idea of the USSR "ransacking" its satellites is laughable. Russia produced more wealth than it got back from the USSR while it put more into improving the less developed regions, as is reflected by the popular referendum whether to keep the USSR intact (overwhelmingly yes) where the votes for yes were significantly higher OUTSIDE of Russia. There's a large amount of scholarly material including many non-communist sources on the subject such as Farm to Factory or Economic Transformation of the Soviet Union if anyone has the gumption to read.
Mark felton has got to be one of my favorite historians. All his content is amazing and brilliant. Such obscure and insightful events he teaches us can only be told by Mr felton himself. Much respect to you
Meh. "It's complicated." If Killing Hitler was so easy why did no one manage to do just that? "If he were dead the War would have ended earlier" is not something one can simply say as true and have that be so. Anyhow I have a book about a serial killer ahem "hard at work" ahem during the time of Hitler's 3rd Reich and am looking forward to reading that.

Cover up the fact that there was a serial killer on the loose right under the noses of the Nazis? That absolutely was true. How is one supposed to tell the difference between law and "law enforcement" in such times but this indeed will be a book about such a matter...a matter that would have to be resolved absolutely. Sounds like something Dostoevsky would have written about anyways. "Seems so small to kill a man" kind of thing..

About 10 years ago, I watched a documentary on this for an hour. You have gone into so much detail in 11 minutes and didnt have any advert breaks, unlike the history channel. Its brilliant
I watched a doc about this too think it was int the 90s. They had actors portraying the SOE planner who interviewed the captured SS talking about Hitler enjoyed his afternoon walks on his own with out protection. Wonder if we wacthed the same doc?

You have created in my opinion one of the very best channels on youtube in reference to entertaining and concurrently educational content. Second to none in my opinion. Professor Felton, I’m 57, and my 3 kids are 23-26, all three JD’s & even there mother and all three kiddos are addicted to your WW2 illustrations, and I finally got my wife & kids interested in my passion of WW2. My uncles were all combat soldiers & marines of WW2 & my father was a combat marine of Korea 1950-1951 & Vietnam 1966-1967, yet my only interest is WW2 & WW1, as my dad purchased all the TimeLife books, as well as anything else he could get his hands on, he purchased only WW2 Beta, VHS, DVD movies, so that developed a great interest for my siblings & I. Thank you for your superb stories Professor.

No, I never did. My oldest brother was a marine in 74 in Vietnam & was 17 when they sent him back in a aluminum box, lost 11 cousins, I was in selective service, however I’m 57 I wasn’t in the draft. I always thank all military for their service, whether in combat or not, because my uncles barely made it back from WW2, they were all enlisted.

Only my kids, my wife is a PhD & realistically my youngest has her JD, but took the bar 2 times & still isn’t practicing law, until she passes hopefully the third time. But only our three kids are JD’s. And things are hectic, seemingly because she’s only 23, but is taking medications that our family physician has prescribed ,because she can’t seem to handle, not passing the bar twice?
Everytime I read your histories, I remember my English teacher at high school. He was from Belize and in the war was a tail gunner in a Lancaster over Germany. He didn't like to talk of his war missions because they gave him sad memories.

@@bananapineapple6949 Das sehe ich als Deutschlehrer an einer Realschule entschieden anders - meine Schüler (selbst die nativ deutschen) sprechen kaum richtig Deutsch (es sträuben sich mir jedes Mal die Haare, wenn ich sehe, wie die Zehnjährigen, die ich als Fünftklässler bekomme, keinen mehr als fünf Wörter umfassenden Satz in der deutschen Sprache hinbekommen und ein Vokabular haben, das angemessen für einen Dreijährigen wäre) und ich brauche sechs Jahre, um ihnen diese Sprache einigermaßen beizubringen, da kann man ihre begrenzten intellektuellen und zeitlichen Ressourcen nicht auch noch auf die Erlernung einer Fremdsprache verschwenden. Englisch lernen sie eh nie vernünftig, bei Deutsch ist noch etwas zu retten. Der Versuch der Zweisprachigkeit ist mMn unter den intellektuell weniger qualifizierten Teilen der Nation eher kontraproduktiv als vorteilhaft.

My dad told me this crazy story when I was a kid that one British sniper had Hitler in his crosshairs, and another miles away was trying to shoot Himmler. They were supposed to kill Himmler first, since Hitler was making so many mistakes in his direction of the war. If they couldn't kill Himmler, they weren't allowed to kill Hitler. In the end, Himmler escaped the sniper, so they had to abort the shot on Hitler. The fear being that Himmler was brilliant, and wouldn't make the mistakes Hitler was making.
I knew when I was young that it was a nutty story, but this video has taught me once again that most myths are based on something true.
You know something isn't right, when your allies plot to kill you, while your enemies decide that letting you live will benefit them.
Easiest way to kill Hitler in the last months of the war: Send in a dozen Lancasters with Grand Slam bombs, guided by Oboe. A dozen ten ton bombs falling within a quarter-mile of the Bunker within 30 seconds would do it. But maybe allied intelligence didn't know about the Bunker. Better to allow Hitler to lose the war for himself.

At that time, Hitler's designated successor was Goering, who by then was an overweight and hopeless junkie. He wouldn't have been much better than Hitler as an infantry strategist. Perhaps he would not have launched the Ardennes offensive and made the Western allies pay a higher price in Germany proper, but nothing was going to change the inevitable on the Eastern front.
Hi Mark. It is always interesting and a great pleasure to watch your videos. I once knew a man you was very closely involved in what must have been Operation Foxley. His name was Ralf and I have forgotten his surname. He died nearly 20 years ago now. Ralf was originally Austrian. As a fluent German speaker he worked for military intelligence and he told me about his part in the plan to assassinate Hitler which he was involved with. Ralf was also involved in the interrogation of prisoners. He told me of how he had learned through this of the location of the German military High Command. He tried in vane to persuade the Americans to divert one Division to capture them. Instead the Americans insisted in bombing the location. 'I knew that was pointless' he said because all that would be achieved would be the destruction of a few wooden huts above ground largely staffed by women when the important work was done in tunnels below ground. This is what happened but they did later on capture the German High Command in that location and following this fighting more or less ceased. Ralf was a very erudite man. He spent his life reading and could talk about anything. He was a tortured soul though. I remember his screams in the night from recurring nightmares.

@@barrykevin7658 I have lots more. I once met the man who piloted the Swordfish torpedo bomber that got the critical hit on the Bismarck. Spies are often thought of as having had a glamorous time in war although the reality was often nasty brutish and short on both sides. The man with a suspicious accent who suddenly turns up in a small community with a dubious story was not going to last long. Nevertheless the Germans did drop off their would be spies by U Boat from time to time. A man who had been a teenager at the time remembered the aftermath of just such an occurrence. The spy had been arrested and his equipment was publicly burned. This included his radio set. Raking through the embers of the fire afterwards, the remains of the spies Iron Cross medal was found. He kept this as a souvenir but he said 'we later moved house a few times and I lost it.' Now then, I wish I had been able to tell that story to all my aunts and uncles when they were alive. I knew something even they did not know! Submariners on both sides could often find themselves desperately short of food. My father remembers seeing a group of French submariners who were so hungry they were collecting whelks and boiling them up. It appears that in a remote part of Scotland a U Boat sent a party ashore with the aim of taking a sheep. They did, but it happened to be a Ram and of course they are notoriously inedible so the plan failed.

I took WW2 history in college. Depends on what part of history your studying. My WW2 classes were not like Professor Felton’s. His teachings keep you interested with his dialogues, details, pics, and films. In other words he brings history alive.
Colleges are too busy these days indoctrinating students on "white supremacy" and "America bad."
@@1940limited well those have more implications on current day events. Especially in looking at recent conflicts like Ukraine and Russia. History can be devised into two camps interesting story’s and global changing events.

Mark Felton the professor in WWII history that everyone wishes they had. Would have definitely gotten an A because everyone would have listened in class. Interesting, expert knowledge, and concise.
He wouldnt have time to teach even 2%of his knowledge in school. There is many other topics of history to cover. No time to these amazing stories and details.

These videos are a god sent for me as they do fill in a lot of knowledge, my father also has a history degree yet most of what he knows about the 2nd world war is from books and extracurricular readings. There's zero doubt in my mind that Dr. Felton and his Team provide vastly superior lessons of History (WW2 being his favorite subject) that I've been exposed to. The well-researched videos not only provide the basics with feeling while giving in-depth pieces of History unknown to us prior to our hearing his videos.
Mark Felton's book "Guarding Hitler" describes all of the plots to kill Hitler in detail. Just finished it. Great read. You won't be disappointed.

my father took part in the air raid on Bertchesgarten in April 1945. He said cloud prevented good bombing of all but the SS barracks. He was flying a Mustang IV with 611 Squadron from Hunsdon. That's a long way in a single seat aircraft!

Dr. Felton forgot to mention the assasination attempt on Hitler prepared by Polish army officers when Hitler arrived to Warsaw in 1939 for the German victory parade. This deserves another video by Mark Felton.
This would have been a suicide mission for the sniper team. I don't see any way that they can escape.

At one time my wife and I visited Salzburg. I inquired, when at the castle in Salzburg, if it was the one that was used in the movie "Where Eagles Dare." I was told that the actual caste was several kilometers distant. I didn't trust my '01 Pontiac Grand Am to get us to such a difficult location, nor my navigation skills (no helpful Garmin navigation device; just a paper map in those days). Even something as common as the car's battery was difficult to replace. Little did I know at that time that the area is very close to the Eagle's Nest.
I'd have loved to be in the room when they told Hitler he wasn't an assassination target because his leadership was self-crippling.
I doubt anyone had the courage to tell him.

Great video. Awesome new color footage, of which at least half I had not yet seen. Only some before from Eva's tapes. I also wonder what Hitler heard or was being told at 11:04. Whether it was swatting at some sort of mosquito or fly, or the frustration and learning of a new unfortunate development.

Even if the building is gone the tunnels are still there - sealed but there. The electricity still works the lifts still work and there are areas hidden away. Lots of the Netzeband Imperial Bank stuff supposedly remains hidden in the forrests of Berchtesgaden. Many tried to find things nobody ever did.

Eva Braun shot the footage. Before the war she worked as personal assistant to a photographer called Heinrich Hoffman and had experience in operating cine-film cameras.

Hitler had blue eyes that stood out which was part of the propaganda machine to captivate the public that's why you don't see him wearing sunglasses.

So sad that the town of Berchtesgaden has such a dark moment in history. It is such a beautiful place. One of my favorite destinations in Europe. Lake Konigsee nearby is beautiful.
It’s so interesting that they concluded that he was more damaging to Germany alive than dead. Makes sense though. His blunders certainly seemed to have a poor effect on the war.
He had lots of blunders, but many gernerals offloaded their mistakes on a dead man who couldn't refute them.

Had my Classic Car Rally group staying at the "Zum Turken" in May 2012, for two nights. The rather eccentric old lady that ran the place had a photo behind her reception desk of a little girl (her, of course) presenting Hitler with a bunch of posies in about 1937. I recall there was also an entrance there to some of the many kilometers of tunnels under the Berghof. I do not know if the "Zun Turken" (minute 4.00) is still operational as a hotel now in 2021, bu if it is It is well worth a visit and a stay
That was 19 years ago. It's doubtful the elderly lady with the Hitler picture is still running the place.

i was there 5 months ago it was shut, has finally been sold for about usd$7m and is now out of the hands of the family that had it, lost it, then got it back since early 1930's, the new owner had to go thru a stringent process to get approved and make aure he wasnt some kind of neo nazi, its going to be renovated and reopened next year, this was my secpnd visit trying to stay there and visit the tunnels underneath, before this was winter and it shuts over winter !

If there’s any History Teachers watching PLEASE TAKE NOTES! Idk about everyone else but it’s been well 17yrs since I graduated high school but I can remember hitting WW2 in 6-7-8th grade social studies/history etc. & after watching Marks channel for years now I’ve learned more about WW2 from watching Mark’s awesome videos than I ever could’ve wished to have learned from 6-8th grade
