Oh Alistair, I have been making this comment about the nature of the crowd for so long and I don't feel alone any more. Thank you! The Good Friday crowd will have been a cobbled together bunch and in the early morning. I feel the same about the subject of context too and 'dropping in' on a lectionary passage. Back then, when a king came in peace, he would ride in on a donkey; they rode a horse into war.
I rode one of those donkeys at Weston as a child, and the thing bit me!
