WOWZERS Roisin, this is such an excellent video. Thankyou for this informative content and the fun and the joy of seeing you sketch. You make it look so easy. Sooooooo much talent.
This is a beginner's question. Do you have lots of pens for each colour of ink? If it's waterproof ink, how do you clean the pen? Thank you for a lovely and informative video.
You’re welcome! I’ve answered this one in other videos so many times, it might be worth having a look through them. I have lots of pens for lots of colours. Again, you’ll find the answer to your second question in lots of other videos!
I love watercolors but I have been using acrylics lately. I just received DeAtrimentis Doc. Brown and have another dude pen on the way. It's still much easier to carry a pallet of watercolors than ink and pens. Someday maybe. Thanks for the informative video though.
I carry three to five pens and it takes very little effort or room,,,I don’t really see a problem! But I am very much a draughtsperson and I adore a beautiful line. Hope you enjoy your new pen.
Very cool, thank you. Just what I needed! I‘ve been looking around, but was uncertain what to get. Have you tried the Grag-von-Faber-Castell waterproof inks? They have a lovely olive green, not cheap, but the colors are inspired by nature. They also have a lovely stone grey.
Really useful Info Róisín. I really fancy using a more subtle ink for underdrawing on my watercolours and I love the 55º nib you use for that more expressive line. Shame I've only just bought a TWSBI Eco T. Great pen but a very regular line. It's fine for some of my purely line work but I would prefer the variation. More purchases coming up!
Listen Ian, there is no such thing as too many pens and anyway I want the one you’ve just bought too. I’m going to do a fude pen video very soon. Oh I did one. Never mind 😂
I have a Hong Dian Black Forest fountain pen with a fude nib and it wasn’t at all expensive so that might be an option for you. It performs really well and doesn’t dry out if I don’t use it for a while. I got it from Amazon.
I too love De Atramentis Document Inks and Rohrer & Klingner Sketchinks! For black, I prefer Platinum Carbon Ink. Also nanopigments and extremely lightfast. I've left it unused for months in various pens, and at the next use, on various papers, it always started writing right away, not skipping one millimeter. I wish DA was more forthcoming regarding their Document vs. Artist inks. They won't say which range is more lightfast.
Hi Róisín - I loved this video. I like your friendly commentary especially as I am a beginner and will be buying my pens and inks soon. Could you please tell me about the brush you use when you filled in the swatch boxes - is it a special brush for inks? Or can I use an ordinary watercolour brush?
My rohrer & klingner sketchink (Thea) has a lot of particles in the buttom of the bottle. I shake the bottle to desolve it. but the settlement comes back in the converter, and I don´t feel like shaking my pen. Have you the same problem or did I get a bad bottle? I use rohrer & klingner dokumentus (a document ink for fountain pen) no problems there.
That's unfortunate. I may yet have that problem, but I have never had it. However I do notice that all my inks separate in the bottle if they're left idle for a few months. There's definitely such thing as a bad bottle though - one of my students has had one.
Thanks for the brilliant video, I’ve been wanting some new inks but I’ve been disappointed in the past when I’ve bought some and the colour looks nothing like the sample they give, whereas this has been so helpful watching you swatch them out! Also I was just wondering what colour you used when you added watercolour to your sketch at the end as it was really nice? Thank you 😊
Thanks Jo! I used a Supergranulating colour by Schmincke , I think that one was Forest Blue. There’s another supergranulating watercolour video coming up! PS you’ll always be safe with De Atramentis Document Ink 🤩
Thanks for this Róisin it's very useful. Can you tell m, given that you said these inks don't clog your pen up do you leave the ink in the pen or wash it out each time after use?
@@roisincure Wow. as a relative newcomer I ruined a pen leaving ink in it. It claimed to be clog free but wasn't. Lesson learned but it's a pain and a waste of ink washing them out every time. Will look at your recommendations. Thanks again.
@@maryhigginson9710 same happened to me. I met the rep from the company once and I pointed it out but she was very defensive! It said “fountain pens” on the side but it ruined a pen. Bin job! So I only go by recommendations.
@@maryhigginson9710 all I can say for sure is: my fude pens don’t clog with this ink, but I do wash them out in warm water if they do clog, after a couple of years!
Do you mean Lily? They don’t call it brown (if that’s the one you mean). I agree there’s a greenish tinge in Lily but I don’t see it THAT much! I like it very much too.
So, do you have a pen for each color? Or do you change colors when your pen runs out? I only have 3 fountain pens and so I don’t find myself using very many different colors of ink.
I want to write with my fountain pen with the Lilly color (rohrer & klingner sketch ink), but it is dark directly from the bottle, do you know if it is possible to lighten the color tone with water or something without ruining the pen? Thank you.
I have found Lily to be the worst of the range for flow. It’s inclined to clog. I love the dark colour but you could certainly try adding boiled water and see if that works to lighten it.
Now there is a coincidence. I've just been looking at painting with inks. There is a German company which does some delightful inks. The company is called Octopus Fluids.
I have about five on the go in my pencil case but there are countless ones knocking around in the studio. Some work, some don't...but never fewer than five colours when I am out and about!
WATERPROOF iNks *DeATRAMENTIS* document black ink is 85$ in canada amazon. What would be your "go to" Sepia? I favour Dr PH Martin's Bombay India ink, but do have some others. It's an ideal colour for an oldy worldy look. And their "Bleed proof white" will obliterate most things!
Thank you so much for taking the time to demonstrate these inks!
I enjoyed it ❤️

Awesome video! Love the Emma color! And love that you don’t like to use a ruler. Me neither 😊
Yeah rulers are yuck! And thank you!
I must get some of that R&K Emma it’s such a beautiful green.

I’m sure they’re gorgeous but no I haven’t tried them. It’s crazy how many fabulous inks are German!
I need to get some of the R&S, they have a grey called Thea and that's the short version of my name,Amalthea. So far I only have a bottle of black
You definitely need that then!
You also need other colours, take it from me!

I would say DA Document Brown is my “sepia”. I made ink once that was even more sepia but you can’t put it in a pen or it will corrode.
