@@metzgerov I'm not a BSG veteran, but I own a game (yet did not managed to win :D ). But I see this new one not really working... more rules, more "ships" and nothing seems to tweaked what could be. BSG.. with altered combat and cylon mechanics. I was highly skeptical of this, as space is a lot more interesting to me than the ocean and sea monsters (yea, I know.. 'Cthulu'.. but that honestly seems barely even there).. ..but this video kind of sold me on it. The fleet board-esque style of enemy deployment was good, enemies being predictable was good.. and the enemies drifting back in the water to simulate movement of the ship was a fantastic touch I didn't expect due to BSG familiarity. I don't own BSG because the going rate is absolutely horrible, especially for the expansions, and so have had to rely on digital means of playing it. But this intrigued me greatly after seeing the run down. Absolutely fantastic. Thank you.

Got this game for the family for Xmas this year - watched your video, tried to play it, got confused, watched the video again to clarify some of the rules that we didn’t get, tried it by myself (me vs the board, no hybrids and trying to get to just 6 on the track marker) and got a much better grasp of it. Just played a 5-player game and the game was won at the last round by the traitors. I'm so happy FFG created an excellent alternative for Battlestar Galactica. Thanks Rodney!
around 41:25 you say that using the captains cabin you can send any character, revealed traitor or not, to the brig, but the text on the board specifies sending a human player to the brig
Yeah, my wording might be a bit unclear there, what I'm trying to say is that any human (regular, or traitor-who-hasn't-been-revealed-as-a-traitor-yet) can be sent to the brig. But really, that probably makes it a bit confusing for some. Better if I had just said, "you can send any player to the brig, as long as they haven't been revealed as a traitor yet".
@@WatchItPlayed yeah, the game itself could have been clearer as well, because it uses "human" both as a specific loyalty a character can have and as "any character who hasn't revealed themselves as traitor"

11:56 When reading choices on a card, do you also read their effects, or only the choice itself? Meaning, is the player that chooses aware of the consequences ahead of time or not?
Hi Rodney, great video as always! I see 'A Distant Plain' on your self and I'm wondering if you will ever do a 'How To Play' video with it as I am struggling to learn and teach that game myself. Additionally, if you have a gameplay video of it or know of one to point me towards that would also be much appreciated! Cheers!
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but hopefully you see a few games on here that might be what you are looking for!
37:20 revealing as traitor, if you HAVE any mythos card, you lose it... how can you have a mythos card? i didn't understand that part, can a mythos card be equiped? sorry if its a stupid question
I don't have a specific example for you (I can't think of a situation where that would happen either), but it is in the rules, so I say it here for completeness. It may be that in practice this would never happen (or there may be a mythos card in the deck that has a special rule that states it stays with the player after being resolved).
@@WatchItPlayed oh i just saw that some mythos cards have "..place this card in your play area" , those mythos cards are characters exclusives , example "Arjun Singh chooses...." etc....so thats how they get equiped! Thanks a lot for the reply !
Hey Rodney, what do you think of the idea of scaling the 4 "health" meters and the distance the boat has to travel proportionally down to make each game not take quite as long? Do you think that would work or would it break some of the other balancing in the game?
I like how they took the "everyone plays a card that might be helpful or harmful" thing from Dead of Winter. I always thought that mechanic should be used in more hidden traitor games.
You had me until you said 3 to 6 player. This definitely looks like an amazing game. Although, I think my wife would get a bit tired of the administration of the game. She likes games that are fewer things to do on every turn, and so many things to do each turn with locations around the board. So I don’t know if this one would fly with her. The concept is amazing, and seeing as I am a pirate, anything about sea going vessels, wins in my book. Great video, of course, this was definitely a complex game to explain, and you make it look effortless. You are the best.
@@WatchItPlayed One of the reasons I watch every game you show. I also like your videos, and I like to know what is out there. I have actually gone into the old FLGS I used to go to (they are not so F any more) and they would say something about a game, and I would be able to correct them because I knew more about the games then they did. Like, for instance, a game was 3 to 6 player, and NOT 2 to 6, when I would say I am looking for mostly 2 player games, and they would pull two or three off the shelf saying this is a great game, and I would say, Yes, if you have three players, like my friend Rodney said, AND IT SAYS ON THE BOX. I was friendlier than that. After COVID they started getting even LESS friendly so I stopped going. Now I am looking for a new store in San Antonio, but have not actually ventured out.
Just a quick question: is it possible for the titles to get lost? For example, in a 3 player game the characters that were picked are ones that are listed as number 8,9, and 10 on the captain’s “hereditary list”. So 8 would start as the captain, but let’s say they lose it, now number 9 gets is. Ok, but they turn out to be a traitor, so number 10 will be the captain now. What if at this point number 10 is sent to the brig by any means? Do the captain title shift back to number 8?
When a character loses a title, it is given to the eligible character who is highest in the line of succession for that title. * Revealed traitors, humans in the Brig and characters not in play are not eligible. * The human losing a title is only eligible if all other humans are in the Brig and that player is not revealing as a traitor. * If a player loses a title and all humans are in the Brig, the title is given to the human in the Brig who is highest in the line of succession for that title.
Hey i really loved your guide, i think anybody should be able to play it after watching. But still got some questions. Soo I was playing William the apprentice(i really like him as the keeper of the tome) his Item lets him resolve a lore card twice for Shrivelling and lesser banishment, can i choose new targets from different spaces? and forced learning? so can i choose 2 skill types to become a supporting skill? does it even work with this item?
I do my best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
Sorry, not quite sure what you mean? Are you asking if the Cultist win if the ship gets to Boston? The Cultists lose if the ship gets to Boston. They also want to sink the ship, but they want to delay it until until a certain number of points are showing on the Waypoint cards.
Great video! I do have a question though: do you have to make a skill check? Or can you choose to automatically fail a test so you don’t have to play any of your skill cards and cards from the chaos deck?
Wow! I’m buying this. I will sell BSG in order to buy some other games. The ocean theme really works for me and those miniatures are fantastic! The BSG theme really turns off a lot of people who don’t know or like the tv show but this just looks fantastic. Sold!
@@WatchItPlayed The rules state a skill card can be played on any players turn. Lets say I'm player A and I have True Grit in my hand, the card says "Action: Perform 2 actions. Limit one True Grit per turn". Can i play this card during player B's turn, granting me 2 actions on their turn?
@@bam674 Greta question Austin, here's the answer: As long as the player playing the skill card is able to take an action (for instance, through the use of a Coordinated Effort), they can use an Action ability on any player’s turn.
Not Rodney but my guess would be: if you have both you pick which one you want to achieve? If you reveal yourself as a traitor you give away all your loyalty cards to one other player so it you had both hybrid and cultist you can pick which one you give away beforehand.
If a player has both a Cultist and a Hybrid loyalty card at the end of the game, that player wins the game if one of the Deep One objectives is met, regardless of how far the ship has traveled.
Damn at the start of the vid I went through a whole train of emotions from the moment you threw the box in the air to the moment I realized it was empty.
He has a faked video of “out takes” on the channel. But we all know the truth. It is not real. The real out take real is hidden in the unfinished portion of his basement with all of the disused games he has, under the old original copy of Risk that he has not played since college.
Thanks for the video, it was good as always. :) I just still can't understand the moving of mother hydra or when the deep ones are spawned in to the deep. I have watched many videos and everyone seems to play it differently. So when mother activates, does it always move towards back of the boat and make damage? I'm confused about those creatures and how they move.
There is only one element I’m confused by: So at the beginning of the game, when everyone is drawing up to their card limit, the current player doesn’t draw any cards? So they can’t contribute to any skill tests on mythos tests until it gets back to them for their actual turn?
It's been a little while since I shot this and I'm not near my rule book right now, but I believe the video says the starting player gets no cards during the "setup" stages (while the other players do), but once the game begins, the very first step of their turn is the receive skills step. So they will start with some, just less than everyone else. Let me know if that helps.
Hi Mikael, I avoid trying to assess game balance. What one person finds balanced, another might disagree with, so I prefer to just show how the game plays, and let others apply their own opinions and biases to that.
You might have said it and I just missed, but what do you do if you're in the brig and just don't have 12 skill worth of cards? Do you just sit there for the rest of the game?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for. And then based on that, if you have a specific question related to what I said, let me know what it is, and I'll try to assist.
I cannot speak for this game, so I'm just assuming here.. but in BSG, which this game is heavily influenced by, characters in the brig still draw their hand of skill cards. And unlike BSG, revealed traitors still draw 5 cards, so it shouldn't be long before you can move again.
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
You could, but the problem is the game loses part of its essence when you play full co-op. Sure the game is naturally designed to be in the traitor’s favor, but removing them entirely doesn’t work. No reason to keep cards in hand a secret, no reason to send people to the Brig or to let them sit in Med Bay. Paranoia is a major component, and removing that would be, in my opinion, a disservice to the game and the players.
It sounds like it could be fun if implemented as in Dead of Winter, where there's the potential for someone to be a traitor, but it's not clear that there definitely is one.
Seem like a cool game, which I have ordered...I wonder if you can add other sea monsters to this game,I mean think on this, why just have deep ones, maybe you can add a giant octopus or maybe a giant shark or giant crabs to the game,.hell maybe cthulhu can show up,he is technically a sea monster, well god/sea monster anyway...maybe

Cheers!
Thanks for the interest! I talk a bit about that here: ua-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/v-deo.html&t=342
Which do you like more: Battlestar Galactica, or this one?
This is battlestar galactica! I love that game
Yes, this game is inspired by that game!
36:35 how is it still secret? How do you hand over the loyalty card without other players seeing it?
Carefully. You could pass it under the table, or slide it to them face down.
Thanks for making this tutorial, glad you also got paid by FFG sponsor!
A pleasure to be able to do it!
Please make a video about "The Thing: The Board Game" which came out recently.
Thanks for the interest!
Hey Rodney, what do you think of the idea of scaling the 4 "health" meters and the distance the boat has to travel proportionally down to make each game not take quite as long? Do you think that would work or would it break some of the other balancing in the game?
I'm really not sure - but something that could be tried!
Well done, as usual
Thank you kindly.
I like how they took the "everyone plays a card that might be helpful or harmful" thing from Dead of Winter. I always thought that mechanic should be used in more hidden traitor games.
Hey Michael, this game is based on the Battlestar Galactica game that came out a few years before Dead of Winter.
Question. When traveling doesn't the monsters in the far back get left at sea and go back to the supply not the deep?
Nope, they go to the Deep.
fantastic unique in the world ciao from italy
Wow quite a game
You had me until you said 3 to 6 player. This definitely looks like an amazing game. Although, I think my wife would get a bit tired of the administration of the game. She likes games that are fewer things to do on every turn, and so many things to do each turn with locations around the board. So I don’t know if this one would fly with her. The concept is amazing, and seeing as I am a pirate, anything about sea going vessels, wins in my book. Great video, of course, this was definitely a complex game to explain, and you make it look effortless. You are the best.
Glad this helped you determine if it would be a good fit for you!
@@WatchItPlayed One of the reasons I watch every game you show. I also like your videos, and I like to know what is out there. I have actually gone into the old FLGS I used to go to (they are not so F any more) and they would say something about a game, and I would be able to correct them because I knew more about the games then they did. Like, for instance, a game was 3 to 6 player, and NOT 2 to 6, when I would say
I am looking for mostly 2 player games, and they would pull two or three off the shelf saying this is a great game, and I would say, Yes, if you have three players, like my friend Rodney said, AND IT SAYS ON THE BOX. I was friendlier than that. After COVID they started getting even LESS friendly so I stopped going. Now I am looking for a new store in San Antonio, but have not actually ventured out.
@@FrankMinogue Yeah, not all game stores are created equal, that's for sure. Hope you find a good one!
"seeing as I am a pirate"
um
@@WatchItPlayed ohh I see, interesting. Thanks for the quick anwser and another great, informative video!
Such a lost opportunity say "Rolling in the deep"... Just kidding! The game looks really interesting, great video!
It crossed my mind :)
Hey i really loved your guide, i think anybody should be able to play it after watching.
But still got some questions.
Soo I was playing William the apprentice(i really like him as the keeper of the tome) his Item lets him resolve a lore card twice
for Shrivelling and lesser banishment, can i choose new targets from different spaces?
and forced learning? so can i choose 2 skill types to become a supporting skill? does it even work with this item?
I do my best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
Does the Cultist win if the are 12 Travel Space before it arrives in Boston?
Sorry, not quite sure what you mean? Are you asking if the Cultist win if the ship gets to Boston? The Cultists lose if the ship gets to Boston. They also want to sink the ship, but they want to delay it until until a certain number of points are showing on the Waypoint cards.
Great video! I do have a question though: do you have to make a skill check? Or can you choose to automatically fail a test so you don’t have to play any of your skill cards and cards from the chaos deck?
I have not come across anything in the rules that says you can just choose to fail without playing any cards.
Do you lose a title for going to the sickbay or just when going to the brig?
Thanks for the video!
You don't lose your title when going to the Sick Bay.
Battlestar Galactica, but make it Eldritch Horror
Wow! I’m buying this. I will sell BSG in order to buy some other games. The ocean theme really works for me and those miniatures are fantastic! The BSG theme really turns off a lot of people who don’t know or like the tv show but this just looks fantastic. Sold!
Very glad you enjoyed what you saw Daniel - have a great time playing!
If you are still selling BSG, I might want to buy it :)
For skill cards, can you only play skill cards on another player's turn if the card does NOT require an action?
Sorry, I'm not quite following your question. Perhaps you have an example you can share?
@@WatchItPlayed The rules state a skill card can be played on any players turn. Lets say I'm player A and I have True Grit in my hand, the card says "Action: Perform 2 actions. Limit one True Grit per turn". Can i play this card during player B's turn, granting me 2 actions on their turn?
@@bam674 Greta question Austin, here's the answer: As long as the player playing the skill card is able to take an action (for instance, through the use of a Coordinated Effort), they can use an Action ability on any player’s turn.
@@WatchItPlayed got it. Awesome video, looking forward to my first playthrough.
@@bam674 Have a great time!
Do you get to choose traitor win condition, if you are dealt both Hybrid and Cultist card?
Not Rodney but my guess would be: if you have both you pick which one you want to achieve? If you reveal yourself as a traitor you give away all your loyalty cards to one other player so it you had both hybrid and cultist you can pick which one you give away beforehand.
If a player has both a Cultist and a Hybrid loyalty card at the end of the game, that player wins the game if one of the Deep One objectives is met, regardless of how far the ship has traveled.
Damn at the start of the vid I went through a whole train of emotions from the moment you threw the box in the air to the moment I realized it was empty.
Ha! Sorry about that. Hope you recovered :)
Rodney, some day you need to show us all the outtakes with all those failed attempts at box flipping.
He has a faked video of “out takes” on the channel. But we all know the truth. It is not real. The real out take real is hidden in the unfinished portion of his basement with all of the disused games he has, under the old original copy of Risk that he has not played since college.
Here ya go! ua-cam.com/video/9WXTNh3fsM0/v-deo.html
Don't worry, the way it is described here is correct (we work with the publisher to ensure we have the details correct).
LEGEND
Glad you enjoyed!
Are the rules balanced for 3 players or do we have to change anything in your opinion?
Hi Mikael, I avoid trying to assess game balance. What one person finds balanced, another might disagree with, so I prefer to just show how the game plays, and let others apply their own opinions and biases to that.
A video about Unfathomable? Unfathomable!
And yet!
If Mother Hydra is at the front of the ship and she activates, will she still damage the closest interior space?

Could you play the game with no traitor? Based off those rules it seems like it would work just fine.
You could try it, but the game is intended to have traitors.
When is the release date?
I'm not exactly sure, but I believe I've seen it in the UK, and imagine North America is around the corner.
I could see them doing an expansion like that in the future perhaps!
@@WatchItPlayedor you can buy some models for the game, only problem is no stats or cards for them....may have to make them up
Is this the Arkham Horror version of Battlestar Galactica: the Board Game?
yes
@@lexodius that's good. Because every fiber of my soul was saying that I've played this before
The BSG designer is credited for the original design, and here they've changed it up and added a new theme.
My friends and I used to pronounce Dagon "DAY-gone" but after watching this video we now all say "DAG-un."
Heh, thanks for joining the Dag-un team :)
