This is one of the best trio performances - all three are locked together, sympathetic, moving as one - agree this is one of the shining examples of improvised 20th century music. Chick Corea is so masterful one takes his unerring playing for granted. Have never heard him play anything out of time or without taste. One of the greatest set of ears in jazz history as well. Yes! They are incredibly tight here. No waste of movement, every note to the point.

Agreed. He knows exactly what he is playing, each and every moment. There is no coincidence, you feel it and you hear it. A true artist and superb craftsman, you need both to be an integral artist. With other artist you sometimes think for some of the passages they play: well their fingers just happened to be there, and they pressed the buttons.

And whats amazing, he also does that with life performances... Basically as if he is translating spontaneously generated, but fully developed ideas straight to his fingers...

Absolute master chick corea, the level of concentration in his lyricism is insane, this song is one of the best examples for me on how to play piano and i always come back when i need to remind myself why i like this approach

I love how they mixed this with the ride cymbal right in the center of the mix.

It's a good mix. A couple of Circle's trio albums are mixed this way!

    • @monsterjazzlicks
      @monsterjazzlicks 4 роки тому +2

I have no idea if Corea was involved in the mixing or production process here? As far as I am aware there is no mention of his contribution in this regard. Of course, this was to change very much so in the coming years...

@@monsterjazzlicks The album was recorded at A&R Recording in New York; the engineer was the masterful Don Hahn, who died this past Saturday.

@@monsterjazzlicks Teo was great-he recorded my father, jazz guitarist George Barnes, at NYC's Town Hall. And there are other engineers with incredible ears and taste, like Don, who have treated the music the way it deserved to be treated: Phil Ramone (one of my godfathers, who trained Don), Rudy van Gelder, going all the way back to pioneers Bill Putnam and Bob Fine.

    Poem by CHICK COREA ~
NOW HE SINGS, NOW HE SOBS ~ 1968
Clinging to Beauty; Clinging to Ugliness
Depending on Love and Loving; lingering with hate and hating
Rejoicing to high heaven; then sad unto death
Now he sings, now he sobs
Now he beats the drum; now he stops
During the course of steps, he learns The Law-of-Falling -and-Catching-Up
He begins to see how What Was always always was and changes as its waves of energy converge to form a new tonal matrix from which he comes again
Because he sees, with great clarity, The Law-of-Falling-and-Catching-Up, he completes the steps in the right time and mounts toward the Matrix from which he originally came.
Mr. Corea's writings inspired by I Ching ~ The Book Of Changes.

This album belongs to the pantheon of great 20th century music. It's as fresh today as the day it was recorded, and in the half century that has passed, no one in this idiom, not even Chick, has come close to equalling it.

Chick made some great records in the 1980s like Three Quartets, Lyric Suite for Sextet...also the duo stuff with Gary Burton or the trio music recordings. This is an iconic album, no doubt about it. Historically, it's huge.

This album is off this world... YET, yet - still my more favourite Chick album is past, present & futures. I think it is even better in an emotional sense. As if Chick has grown in spirit - more emotional/spiritual nuances. And musically just as mind blowing for me as this album.

Every time I hear trio music by Chic Corea,
it puts me in an introspective, existential kind of mood, in which Im left for a while after the music has ended.

Chick Corea fans, My only wish was that Chick had re-recorded "Guajira" on this session in a trio format! "Guajira" was recorded on the "Tones For Jones Bones" sessions but not released until later as a bonus track on Corea's "Inner Space" album misspelled "Guijira". Chick first recorded "Guajira" on a Willie Bobo album entitled "From Latin To Jazz Dance Vol. 1" in 1963. It was also released as a "B" Side on the Willie Bobo single "Do That Thing" in 1963! It has a gorgeous Latino melody!

monsterjazzlicks I believe so. I wouldn't have typed in those comments without some sort of reference! I read somewhere that Chick is on that recording. I just can't seem to remember where I got that information. I know Chick was in Willie Bobo's Combo in the early 1960's.
