  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2014 BMW M235i and the 2014 Lexus IS F may not compete head to head but they are more similar than you may see at first glance. In an extended TFLcar 0-60 MPH mashup review Nathan and Roman not only see which of these two cars is faster from o-60 but we also drag race them and of course review them in the process.

    For those who don't realize,
    Turbo cars operative faster at high altitudes
    N/A cars suffer at high altitudes
    Would have been a much different review if compared at sea level

      It would be much closer yes, the IS-F likely wins...but not by as much as you'd think. Turbos provide acceleration benefits even at sea level, and the superior transmission on the BMW would also help even the playing field. Having said that, if someone offered me a free pristine low mileage M235i or IS-F of the same year I'd likely choose the IS-F simply because of the high revving, rock solid V8 and the fact they're quite rare compared to M cars.

    There is no way the Lexus IS-F would lose to a BMW M235i.
    They need a real driver to drive Lexus IS-F.

    BMW vehicles are a pain to service and are less reliable than Lexus vehicles. There's a reason Lexus got rated #1 for luxury.

      ***** Even with regular maintenance (fluid changes, etc.), German cars require constant replacing of parts. This is true of all German cars, whether they are economy Volkswagens or high end BMWs. The cost of ownership is astronomical for such a mediocre product.

      Will_Powell Mediocre product... German car engineering is at the top of the world right now. The reason they are so expensive is because they over engineered to their limit. The germans literally fit as much shit into their cars as they can, thats why they need maintenance.

    • @WPowell420
      @WPowell420 10 років тому +9

      Jesus H. Christ They've been falling apart for the past 25 years. The level of engineering means nothing if engineers can't even select bushing material that lasts more than a couple years. German car enthusiasts are in denial. I've heard it many times, "In 2006 (or 2008, or 2012, or...) they fixed the problem." The cars are still falling apart, just like they always have. German cars don't last; they never have, and probably never will.

    Everybody hating on the BMW without realizing these cars were built with different purposes in mind. Lexus has never valued performance more than user-friendliness (except for the LFA, which doesn't check either box). BMW's aren't about being your average go-to-work car. They're supposed to be fun. Yeah, the ISF is great to drive. But that's not what Lexus builds their cars for, and it shows. The ISF will be much more reliable, and a much better road car. But, this is why I chose the BMW (actually I have a M240i, but same sort of idea). Sure, I might go broke owning it. But I want a fun car, and that's what the BMW is. Just my two-cents.

    • @krnboy8171

      lexus does not make ISF anymore with v8 from their LS models tuned by yamaha. there is a IS350 F sport package with v6 but it is not the same car or even a similar car. what your missing is the wide body kit, BBS wheels, bigger brakes/calipers, 8 speed transmission, ISF dedicated suspension components, Direct Injected and Port Injected V8 engine, faux carbon trim, power dome hood, faux quad exhaust, and 118 HP.

    I don't know how I missed this, been subbed to TFL for what seems like more than a decade now, doh! Having said that, this is a comparo I wouldn't have guessed mentally, but these cars are pretty evenly matched even though the Lexus has a V8. Yes, I 100% agree with Roman, the 2 series (especially the one of that era) is a modern BMW that still feels like what a BMW should be, and choosing the auto (very good ZF unit) isn't quite the wrong choice you think it may be. In fact without the ZF auto it likely loses the drag to the IS-F, but not by much. This 2 series can also compete with the Lexus on reliability...not something you can say about many BMW's of that era, a few years earlier or even today. Having said all that, I'd choose the IS-F for these reasons: rare, looks great and rock solid Lexus reliability..and high revving V8! I mean what can be better than that? I mean other than the a bit faster RC-F coupe, totally awesome LC-500 or possibly the newest IS-500 that has 472 HP? I'm getting sad just thinking about how all this will go away soon never to return😢 (not everything is about 0-60, no EV will ever feel or sound like a BMW straight 6 or Lexus V8 that revs to 7300 rpm)
    Edit- the BMW may have the dual clutch instead of the ZF auto, can't remember

    • @davesouthword1298
      @davesouthword1298 Рік тому

      It’s ZF. And it’s a peach of a car. I’m not comparing it to anything, each to their own; but the M235i ticks all the boxes for me.

      Yeah, but, the S3 has an S-tronic dual clutch, quattro and makes 290 horsepower with 2 less cylinders while the M235i makes only 30 more Horsepower with 2 more cylinders, and has an 8 speed no dual clutch. The S3 also has more utility, and has a nicer, newer interior, with more options.

      According to Motor Trend, the Evo GSR does 0-60 in 4.3 seconds. This Lexus 0-60 is 4.9 per Nathan at sea level and 5.85 seconds during this test at 1 mi above sea level then he did a run that was 7+ seconds 0-60. Read it and weep Andrew. The Evo is quicker.

      buildmorefarms100 try googling again my friend. the isf does 0-60 in 4.3 secs, quarter mile in 12.6 at 112 mph STOCK ask me how i know. ive owned evo 9, evo x and now ISF. try again. isf actually could do 4.2 secs stock under right conditions.

      So now Im your friend, great! Before you said I was retarded? Hmm...Well Nathan was only able to do 4.9 -7.85 seconds for the Lexus.....0-60 that is the truth documented in this video. The Lexus is almost twice the cost of an EVO GSR. For that money it should be way faster. Even the BMW is only 44k.

      Ya the ISF would be amazing with a stick, but the Japanese are known for making high tech cars as opposed to driver involved cars. The ISF would really be 10x better with a 6 speed manual. It looks gr8 and the V8 has enough go. Thank god atleast BMW still cares about the purist market with cars like these and the new 3/4 series. Even the M5 and M6 can be had with a manual gearbox.

    • @ogmechsftw

      @@647killa Please. The ISF's 8 speed literally paved the way for bmw's favourite ZF 8 speed gearbox that literally every single bmw product is using nowadays.

    These guys need to stop doing head to heads of turbo cars vs naturally aspirated cars at elevation. What's the point? The turbo car has an insane advantage by nature of how turbos work. The paddle shifters(manual) would get you a much faster time as well on the ISF.

    Lol typical asswipe people here complaining about German reliability, or the lack thereof. Please if you can't afford premium gas and synthetic oil, and can't be bothered to maintain it any other way but through a stealership, don't buy any car for that matter and ride a scooter. Both cars are premium cars and Lexus parts and maintenance on a V8 won't be your typical corolla money. Both cars are expensive and great in their own way. BMW's are stupid reliable and I can go on about my fathers Lexus rx300's and Is300's problems all day long, but the truth is, my father isn't so handy with cars and can't be bothered, so his Lexus costs him twice the money than my e46 M3 and my e46 328i cost me. These aren't silly Mercedes or old vw/audi's we are talking about. Please don't associate BMW's with other German brands unless you've driven, tracked, wrenched, and owned one for a very long time. As for this mashup, great cars both of them, but I'm a sucker for 'the ultimate driving machine' and a straight 6 engine. Plus BMW gives me a proper 6 speed manual and near perfect weight distribution. I'd take the bimmer all day. If you want a Japanese muslce car that isn't trying to be a freaking GTR, ISF is a good value. Gr8 mashup guys !

      Yeah, I've wondered where they get this unreliability information from. Also, since when have GM, Ford and Chrysler become bywords for reliability ?

      I have an ISF and I can tell you that the servicing costs no more than a normal IS250. The main difference in price are the brakes, which are Brembos are are more expensive. I track the ISF so I know the main parts that need replacing are tyres and brakes, nothing more. I won't comment on the BMW reliability horror stories because there are more than enough around. With Lexus, you press "engine start" every morning and you know it starts. I work full-time, I don't have time to waste spending in a car workshop.

    • @647killa
      @647killa 10 років тому +5

      Lol great to hear an owner chime in with their opinion. Your horror stories might apply to you, if you have owned a bmw in the past that Is. I live in Canada where parts are all taxed up and pricey, yet being a full-time mechanical engineer, my M3 starts up every morning, never left me stranded like my Audi A4 every other week, and never gives me any more maintenance than the usual items. While I respect your opinion, plz don't bring in internet garbage about unreliable German cars and other 'horror' stories, because the RX300 we own has been nothing but a pain, and at 170,000 km its squeaking and rattling to death. I track regularly at Cayuga Racetrack in Ontario, and I have never had those 'subframe' or 'VANOS' failures. Clearly, if you can't afford to wrench (if needed) on your car and go to the dealership for everything, you will have horror stories to tell lol. Notice I'm talking about BMW here, not Audi or VW as the 2 that i have owned really have left me stranded. I am a JDM car guy myself, and my brother has a twin turbo supra and I have owned many cars including an R32 skyline GTR. I will say again that plz do not associate BMW with the other german car manufacturers that are unreliable, especially if you have never owned, tracked, and daily driven an //M car or any bmw for that matter (just saying, maybe you have owned one). We all got opinions, experiences and stories to tell.
