I think the main issue was not only pricing but it was timing. Most of the kids that grew up with ToyBiz were gearing up for college and collecting anything comic related was in the toilet. Comic collecting really started to take off again after big media companies like Fox, Disney, and Sony started to invest and rewrite some of the story arcs. The relevancy caused some collectors to either pick up where they left off or cash in their collections. To this day, I think that Marvel legends should be locked in at the $15 - $20 mark because the current prices aren't sustainable. It makes no sense for ToyBiz to re-enter the comic toy market because things are starting to cool down and manufacturing techniques have come a long way since. They would have to produce top shelf items in the realm of Mezco, Mayfex, and Sideshow at bargain prices in order to drum up interest and I don't see that happening.

    • @tonileo9849
      @tonileo9849 Рік тому +4

I agree, production wise will be difficult because of all the articulation shown, i mean they, or whoever owns the page/ company whatever, have showed us articulated fingers get this.... at EVERY FINGER JOINT, at about 1/12 scale, that was something only seen on the 18 inch spiderman 2 figure.
So, they have to do that to every figure, which is going to be expensive if we re talking different characters, that if they d even get the marvel license.
The prices, like you said, should be near mezco/ mafex so close/ over 100 bucks, but if we re sticking to marvel here, the market is pretty much filled by shf, mafex, mezco, and obviously hasbro, so they d have to bank on the nostalgia alone to move forward, but if the prices are import level, it wont be enough.

One thing I'd like to note is ToyBiz was called "Toy Biz, Inc" in the 90s. Spider-Man Classics Series 1 and 2 had "Marvel Ent." on their feet, but it was still produced by Toy Biz. In 2003, nearly all figure said "Toy Biz WW." This new ToyBiz, is called "ToyBiz LTD." All those companies are not the exact same thing, just wanted to point that out

That announcement from ToyBiz didn't say they would be producing Marvel figures. It just said they announced plans to produce "action figures and toys". It didn't say anything about them getting the Marvel license back. So it could be true. ToyBiz could come back in the same way that Toys R Us "came back". Pretty much in name only as a shadow of its former self. So Disney may have sold the ToyBiz name to some investors because who cares about them if they don't produce toys that compete with Disney's licenses.

I think from a competition perspective, it would be healthy to have more companies competing in the same space. If consumers are getting more frustrated with the direction of Hasbro (Haslab Ghost Rider pricing, constant reused parts, paper packaging, etc, etc) and there are no alternatives, then it is Disney who ultimately loses out. They're currently placing a lot of trust in Hasbro to do right by the fans. I would be curious to see how the numbers look for them and to see how they're trending.

I started collecting Marvel Legends seriously a couple of years ago. Got me some Hasbro stuff, then I decided to look up Toy Biz stuff. I was disappointed. Honestly, from my perspective, Hasbro did produce a lot of stinkers, but nowadays they make way better stuff than Toy Biz. Moreover, I just don't get a lot of decisions made by Toy Biz. For example, there are just two, just two Black Suit Spidey they did. And both of them don't correlate with any of the Classic Suit Spideys at all. I want my characters to have if not exact, but similar proportions between their figures. I want them to look like it's the same person wearing a different outfit. For that reason I fell in love with Pizza Spidey mold. Recently, I "replaced" my Red'n'Blue and Black Pizza Guys with MAFEX figures, I do acknowledge, that figures I love are not the best. Judging by the comments, a lot of Toy Biz fans just can't take their rose-tinted glasses off.

Whats that? Uninformed and reactionary? Thats certainly a REAL collector lol
Not that I think for sure that the new Toybiz thing will work out, but hes making some wild assumptions. And is just wrong about some things. Disney owns Marvel Comics and licenses out some of their characters to IDW. That shows me that theyd have no issues licensing out Marvel to another company making similar figures. Hell they already do. Marvel Selects arent a WILDLY different market than Marvel Legends and its possible that if the new Toybiz does get the Marvel license that will be the market they aim for. Not the same one as Hasbro.
Most annoying though is his assumption that because "Disney owns Toybiz" this thing is absolutely fake. There is no reason Disney would keep the Toybiz name just for the hell of it. If someone wanted to buy the name and Disney has zero intention of using it, theyd take the money in a heartbeat.

The closest it could be true would be if Disney (being a big company and the ToyBiz trademark likely not being a priority) accidently or not let the name go out of copyright in more or one regions. Stuff like that does happen. Then a new company gets to call themselves ToyBiz. But it would be a totaly unrelated company. It wouldn't have access to Marvel Legends or any such things. I believe the story for this was that toybiz property such as sculpts and already made figures was purchased when the company closed shop but the name stuck with the original creators. Which isn't hard to believe because Disney would t care about keeping something as insignificant as a company. Well maybe 2007 disney. Anyways no on was expect them to start doing Marvel figures again. That's just dumb, people were thinking they were going to start doing proper figures for certain films and heros from certain comics.
Also almost 20 years later I can 100% say with all certainty that Toybiz back in the day was like the Mcfartlane of now. All the figures look better as small statues and all the figures are un uniformed and look as though one artist worked on them separately. The crazy unneeded articulation caused figures to have off putting body shapes.

It's honestly sad that people think we can buy super poseable action figures for only $10 each WITH ARTICULATED FINGERS (com'on, this is unrealistic). I mean, it still does happen when some figures pegwarm for too long, and they only charge $10-$15 for their ugly figures that no one wants, but that's about it. Say, if Toybiz does come back for real with most of the old team that used to work there, the new action figures they would make would be very expensive. It would NOT be cheap to make and produce them, especially when trying to get them into stores. If it does happen for real, the Toybiz action figures would be, like, $80 or more (by using this super poseable prototype body, for example).

Being 2016, some information is probably outdated nowadays. But from what I've read, ToyBiz had the Marvel figure license revoked because Disney realized the little money they made from it wasn't worth sustaining those factories to produce them. Their solution? Sell the rights to Hasbro, that way Disney gets a cut without having to run their own factories and pay employees, let Hasbro do it.
ToyBiz tried making the Legendary Heroes line but it still wasn't profitable enough to keep doing it.
Ultimately, (according to my research from 7 years ago) ToyBiz didn't go bankrupt and then lose the license to Hasbro, instead, they weren't making enough money, so Hasbro acquired the license and that's what killed them.

Something to remember is that *ANYONE* can edit a Wikipedia page to say anything so that info is not something you can consider reliable. From what little info that's out there either this new guy has bought the ToyBiz name and logo and Legendary Comic Book Heroes name and logo (and *ONLY* the names and logos) from Disney or the trademarks have expired and this guy has claimed them. Trademarks and copyrights are two completely different things. Copyright is the embodiment of a work such as artwork, a story or a song while trademark covers the names and logos used in business dealings. Copyrights last for something like 100 years where trademarks have to be kept in some sort of constant use to retain ownership. For example when Disney's copyright on the initial Micky Mouse cartoon expires it doesn't affect the following cartoons until said expiration time frame arrives nor does it affect the trademarks Disney holds on names and likenesses of those particular versions of Micky Mouse, Minnie Mouse or Pegleg Pete. If this guy is, indeed, bringing back ToyBiz and is not being just some complete social media troll it will be, like you said at the end of the video, completely unrelated to the old ToyBiz. He will not be making Marvel Legends and even if he does have some sort of Marvel license it won't be for any category that Hasbro currently has. I'm having trouble remembering any of ToyBiz's original IPs other than Water Babies but I'm sure that those IPs (like Water Babies) were sold off years ago, most likely before the complete shutdown of the division.

If by some miracle Toybiz did come back it would be a waste of time to pursue the Marvel license when there is a huge hole in the market right now for a good quality/affordable six-inch scale DC line. The only options for six-inch DC figures right now are Mafex and Mezco which are pretty expensive.

I don't think the idea is that Disney have SOLD Toy-Biz, more that they've let the trademark lapse so someone else has jumped on it.
Which sounds stupid, but that's exactly what happened with Hasbro and Action Force. Hasbro didn't bother to renew the trademark so Bobby Vala snagged it.
The crucial thing is, even if that is what happened the new company have only acquired the right to call themselves Toy Biz. They don't have access to any of the IP Toy Biz worked on in the past, including Marvel.

  • @AlphaProto

Maybe the only thing they bought was the name and logo? Then they will use that to sell action figures from independent comics? Back in my area, the 5-inch figures were $5.70. The Marvel Legends were around $7.40, and included a super articulated figure, playing card, comic book, accessory, and a build a figure part. That was a great value.

From what I understand of Trademarks (and I'm NOT a Legal expert by any stretch), they tend to be territorial by nature. So if a US trademark is not registered or currently maintained in the UK, it should generally be free to use. The UK Government's Companies House oversee this and will reject any infringements.
But as Mr Prime points out, this guy has registered three similar businesses in the space of a few months at the beginning of last year, but he has yet to file any official paperwork besides the companies' Incorporation documents.

Hasbro probably make other Disney stuff too. There's no reason why Disney would damage that relationship unless there was serious bucks involved and it was with a company that could make financial guarantees. How can new company (using an old name) make any guarantees? Besides that, the Hasbro Marvel Legends figures sell very well. It's a very successful line. Why would Disney jeopardise "money in the bank" for no obvious gain?

Im not saying the new Toybiz is FOR SURE on the up and up, but I think you overestimate how much Disney would care about the Toybiz name or even the toy license being exclusive to Hasbro. Toybiz means essentially nothing to Disney currently. Its a name they potentially own that they are doing nothing with. If they can get a small payday by selling the name then why wouldnt they do it? Its like selling a old figure youve had in a drawer for a decade and have no intention of displaying.
Second, Marvel and Disney have no particular loyalty to Hasbro. They license out the license to plenty of different companies all the time. We are talking about a company that OWNS Marvel Comics but still licenses out Marvel characters to IDW for some books. Plus depending on how the new guys at nu Toybiz sold the idea, they could be in a different market. Sort of like how Playmates and Neca both have the Turtles. Or more similarly how Marvel Legends and Marvel Selects both exist. Heres a crackpot theory. Perhaps Diamond loses the license and they give that corner of the Marvel line to nu Toybiz to make similar figures.

Mostly because we got a lot of reused body molds just encouraged me to get into the hobby. To be honest they are all fodder to me. Especially the larger characters Baf's mostly out of scale. Toy biz did a good job on giving us large figures for the same price as the other's. Almost every baf has been So out of scale and thank goodness for haslab and our large scale G-man and Sentinal.
but if they (toybiz) ever wants to do a marvel line. I've always thought a Marvel Master-pieces series in like a 7 inch line with more Accurate scales would be cool. Remember those badass cards.
