Spring time can be a frustrating time on knowing where to begin when your lawn is brown and dingy. My four easy spring steps will show you where to start in your lawn care journey.

Step 1- Scalp mow the lawn. Scalping the dead tissue off the top is the first step to getting the brown out of the lawn and letting the new tissue thrive.
Step 2- Dethatch the lawn. I prefer to use the sun joe dethatcher and scarifier. its a fantastic tool to getting the excess debris off the top of the soil
Step 3- use a scarifier to remove excess thatch. excess thatch will prohibit new blade growth. By removing the thatch your lawn will grow new blades of grass and thicken up.
Step 4 - use a nitrogen based fertilizer to give the lawn what it needs early spring time.
Watering is going to be area specific. The general rule of thumb is to never let the soil dry out.

The only caveat to this video is DO NOT use the dethatcher spring tine attachment on warm season grasses, it will do a lot of damage to the laterally spreading parts of the grass. The scarifier, on the other hand, will slice thru cleanly, and as you said, encourage more lateral growth and increased density. I know your lawn is not a warm season, and so not directly applicable to what you were demonstrating, but some of those watching might have warm season.

The best purchase i have ever made for my lawn.If you have too much thatch you are WASTING your money on fertilizer.Last August i thought my lawn was shot. Come September when the temp was cooler i dethached with my new Greenworks 10 amp dethatcher . Immediately applied Scotts fall lawn fertilizer and the results were beyond amazing . For about a 140 bucks this machine picked up so much thatch in a matter of 20 min that would have taken me all day with a rake .Now all my fertilizer reaches the soil after a i water it in .

It's raining, My neighbor is still mowing. I saw him out earlier with a hand-held leaf blower no bigger than a spatula. The man waters his lawn 1 sq ft at a time, with a watering can. It takes him all day. That's how you can tell the owners from the renters.
I cut the lawn next door. That's how I tell. It's not an problem, just an observation.

Gorgeous lawn! Mine is currently buried under snow and an 80’ hemlock brought down by the recent nor’easter. 😢 I hand dethatched my 9000sf lawn last fall. Time to buy one of those machines and also scarify. TY for great advice always.

My lawn came out 90% green. After our rain it greened up nice. I put down 29-0-4 then it rained/snowed. I’m sure it will really pop now. 60ish degrees next week 😊

I followed your instructions, and I'm pleased to report that I have 2000 square feet of lawn. It's been a week now, and I'm already seeing new growth. It took me two days to complete the work on my own. I have tall fescue, which seems to have deep roots, suitable for the climate here on Long Island, NY. Could you advise me on what my next steps should be in a few weeks? Or is this the end of the season's maintenance? Please advise.

Excellent! get a soil test so we can dial in your fertilizer schedule. biggest thing to pay attention to is the ph levels. i prefer to use mysoil since they test what nutrients are plant available.

@@minceym soil has a lot of great nutrients inside. considering your postassium is low thats what we want to focus on. the first three numbers on the bag represent N P K. Ideally we want the middle number as 0 considering we have a more than adequate amount of phos in the soil. The plant wants about 4lbs of N per year and 2lbs of K to sustain itself. so if we can find something like a 10 0 10 or equivelent that would help us meet our goals. just keep in mind we are not trying to fix the soil but have a better understanding of what's missing to help sustain plant life.
If you find a 10 0 10 then my recommendation is to spread 5lbs of product per 1000 ft2 every 4 weeks.
@@pestandlawnginja Thank you for responding again, Mysoil recommended a 7-0-20 because of the Potassium (K). What would be your choice for the 10-0-10? I use this for your first recommendation after Dethatching and Scarifying (Sta-Green All Season 40-lb 10500-sq ft 20-0-0 All-purpose Lawn Starter Fertilizer) with good results.

Hey, I lived in Orem for 30 yearss. It sure looks like we could have been neighbors. In earlier videos you recommended a fertilizer from a company in Idaho. Do you still recommend that fertilizer in addition to the farmer brand. BTW, I have used the farmer's 4 step brand for years with good results, but feel I was just as successful with their garden fertilizer at less cost. Thoughts?
for our area the 10 - 0 - 10 or equivelant can't be beat. pro peat is a great product and i recommend it. the fertilizer shown here is straight nitrogen. great for a first application.
as for which is best. there are varients in the types of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. but at the core most are the same. so equivelent mixtures will generally yield similar results. propeat is special in the fact that each pearl of granular has the mixture in it.
@PestandLawnGinja i used golfgreen 30-0-3 for fertilizer. I somewhat dethatched, mowed it again and then put that fertilizer on. I noticed once i went really low with the mower the grass wasnt green it was more brown, so i put a decent amount of this fetilizer, i read online i should of seeded. Am i doing this correctly? I have the scotts thick and quick seed but i only used the fertilizer for now. Im going to keep watering it. When should and if i should put down the seed? Thanks

Never done ANY of this and I have the best yard in the neighborhood NO LIE. I’ve developed my own system no dethaching no aeration my yard has been thick and green for several weeks now and I have about a dozen people a year knock on my door and ask me how I do it 🤷🏻♂️

WE had scaled the lawn at lowest setting on EGO. used our sunjoe dethatcher previously and applied step ! with crabgrass a couple weeks ago. didn't green up like I expected.. In my sandy soil I'm learning to much rain or water takes the fert down below the roots... SO after watching this vid this am... I bailed on getting paperwork off the kitchen table and tax prep and switched to the scarifire tines on our 15" sunjoe.. ran it each way then scalped again and then tossed on some 21-0-0 just like a Ginja

Man, it's always a battle. Last year I finally got most of my goosegrass conquered, so I was thinking this year would just be mostly a maintenance year. Wrong. As soon as it started getting warm, I realized I know have poa triv all over the place. I'm told that running the scarifier can actually spread the poa even faster, so I'm opting out of that this year. I'm going to throw a hail-mary and try a cocktail of selective herbicides (mesotrione, sulfentrazone and fenoxaprop) to see if I can put a dent into it, otherwise it looks like it's full renovation time. I know Velocity-PM is supposed to be able to do it, but if I'm going to spend $500 (before I even get into the seed, fert, etc to fill in where all the triv was) I'd rather just kill it all, start over and go with a good cultivar (No offense, Scotts) and get everything uniform. I'd say my front yard looks to be about twice the size of yours, but I think I can get the seed, fert, and other supplies I need for less than what I'd spend if I went the Velocity-PM route. I'll be sure to report back if the cocktail works, but I suspect the renovation is probably unavoidable.
Reporting back with mostly good news. My cocktail _seems_ to be working. I mixed up a gallon to spot treat my poa triv and a few other things. I actually used T-Zone (sulfentrazone, tricyclopir, 2,4-D and dicamba acid) Tenacity (Mesotrione) and BioAdvance Bermuda Grass Control for lawns (fenoxaprop) all at the label rates with a splash of methylated seed oil for a surfactant . I'm happy to report it utterly disintegrated my clover. As far as my poa triv goes, it's looking pretty sickly. It isn't dead after one application, but it seems really unhappy, and even if it doesn't completely die back, its actually much easier to grab it and manually pull it out. If it doesn't completely die off, I think I can get most of it out with a thatch rake. But I think another treatment or two will spell the end for my poa. Also, it doesn't seem to be bothering what little TTTF is left among the triv.
A few notes for anybody wanting to replicate this. I have a cool season lawn, that is mainly TTTF, but there is some KBG mixed in. We've also had pretty cool temps the past week (highs in the low 60s) Based on what this mix did to the clover, I'd say it's a pretty "hot" mix and might damage your good turf if it's already stressed.
One last report. After two treatments of my cocktail mentioned above, (a few weeks apart) and a few passes with my sunjoe dethatcher, I don't have any signs of Poa Triv in my front lawn. I'm not 100% confident yet, as the heat may have cause some of it to go dormant, but as of now I can't find any of that lime-green in the yard. It's definitely thinned out compared to when I started, but what's left seems pretty healthy. I think I may have avoided a complete renovation.

hey! The lawn did go dormant it. ground temps were below 40 degrees since december. it held the color due to my october application and what i mentioned in the video. I've had similar results with my bluegrass as well.

Just did a lawn reno last year, coming out of winter we're stressin the health of our yard. Between all the snow and the dang dogs we're unsure how to get the yard back. I mean our yard looks way worse than this yard. It was newly sodded last year. Anything outside of these steps i need to incorporate?
I would consider seeding and patching everything up as soon as possible.

I fertilize every 4 weeks. as for nitrogen based fertilizers my area is notoriously low in N. so i do it regularly

Can you use a dethatcher on St Aug ? I heard it’s cuts the stolons which essentially is killing the grass ?
It's the scarifier I wouldn't use. The dethatcher at the higher settings, above the stolons, can be beneficial if you have loose debris

Question a little off topic. So i dethatched, and laid seed. Was thinking of adding peat moss now. Do i need a spreader?, or can i just pour peat moss and rake? I feel like i should have done peat moss first, then seed. I worry about messing up my seed spread, by racking around all the peat moss. Thanks!
Best to place the peat last. It's difficult to do without a spreader. If it does in to thick it can cause issues. It's not that you can't do it without the spreader it's just a pain
Thanks for the advise partner. Hopefully I can rent one from my local tool place. I seeded yesterday. Will try to lay some top dressing on Monday. I hear not to seed in spring specially late spring. But May has been perfect temps so far. Little cooler here up North. Looks like we have 10+ days of mixed rain, cloud, sun 50-60 temp days. I might get lucky this spring🤞your lawn looks great btw!

You can just scarify.
Around which step should i apply pre-emergent? On the north side, I'm afraid the ground is too cold for detaching, but I cant do that after applying pre-emergent either.
pre emergents should be applied before the ground temps reach 55 degrees. i would do it after the dethatch and scarification

Sun Joe now makes a 15 inch battery model. I just got one, and it works fine, just wish I could get more time out of each charge, but I am doing a close to 20K sq ft lawn, so I am going to have to recharge a couple of times to get it all done.

at the end of the day the barrier will be limited by the amount of debris that you have. if you have a lot of debris and thatch its worth stripping it out and re applying
Can I dethatch even while weeds are growing and overtaking my yard??
Yes.
Dethatching, Scarifying and Aeration is not a good idea if your lawn already has a preemergent barrier. You’ll break the barrier and allow the dormant weed seeds to grow. You’ll get crabgrass and dandelions.

I always thought you shouldn’t dethatch or aerate in the Spring because it makes way for weeds to grow. At least that’s what Jonathan Green says.
pre emergent should indeed go down after this process. the counter argument is this, if the ground temps are around 55 during the heavy germination process, dethatching and scarifying can disrupt the seed due to the cultivation. if you dethatched lightly every 3 to 5 days during this process it would be considered a form of non chemical pre emergent practice.

I have a bumpy lawn that I wish to level. I purchased a rolling spreader and plan to use compost mixed with peat moss. How often can I apply this mix across the lawn, Kentucky Blue, without killing the lawn?

@michaelallen6770 just math. It all depends on the type of product. A 20.0.0 = 5lbs of product per 1000 sq ft to get to 1lbs N per 1000 sq ft

Great video I love the easy steps! Now, I'm located in Western Canada coming off of reseeding my lawn in the fall last year, and it looked great. Green, lush, very healthy. We are very early into our spring with warm weather, but my lawn which looked great, looks like garbage, Very yellow, very dormant, and no where near close to my neighbouring lawns that are getting very green already. I'm getting concerned it will not grow back like it had even after having fertilized once a week or so ago. Any tips for me would be amazing!
You'll be fine. Check your water levels, do a soil nutrient test, I prefer mysoil. Most likely fertilizer and a dethatch will fix it

Great video. Will this help reduce or get ride of dandelions? Is there a recommendation to get rid of dandelions particularly when you have dogs?
dandelions are commonly biennial weeds meaning they have a two year life span most of which is happening underground. dethatching can dramatically reduce weed seed germination if ran weekly during the germination period when ground temps are between 50 and 60 degrees F. For better control its best to look into pre emergent control and also herbicides to get rid of the actively growing weeds. also keeping your lawn as thick as possible helps a ton

Just lower the fertilizer dose by 2/3rds and seed away!
Struggling with mine. I feel like I overapplied pre-emergent the last couple years( our sub has a lot of issues with weeds) and find that the lawn is showing slow growth. This spring i've tried "repetitive overseeding" because weeds were starting to take over. Should I got for the fert with Nitrogen now? We have sandy soild and my whole lawn has thinned out.

Hi, begginer here, i want to fix my lawn so bad! My lawn is infested with all different kinds of weeds, on top of that the ground is dry and cracked. What i really want to do is start from scratch. Is it best to do that before fall? Due to its condition can i still dethatch it? What would you recommend? Im in kansas
After dethatching and scarifying, are you skipping seeding and top soil because your lawn already looks great? If my lawn is not near as good as your should I seed and top dress and then fertilize?

I disagree with the watering you mentioned at the end. You do want the soil to dry out somewhat. Too much moisture will cause fungus. Also shallow watering promotes shallow root growth. If the top is always wet the roots dont need to go deeper.
there's a bunch of counter arguments for sure. i've gone the rounds with the top seed companies on this subject, pros and cons of shallow watering and deep water. fun to debate.
but i do feel its important to note that generally when the top layers are dry, that doesn't mean there's a magical source of water down below for the roots to chase. from the 1000's of lawn assessments i've done there's only been a handful of cases that there's been water below when the top layers were dry and it was due to low water table. but it does happen.
Interesting you think a scarifier is better than an aerator. I don't have a truck and a second person so i always have to schedule a buddy to get it on and off a borrowed truck. A scarifier would be so much more convenient!

What would you suggest for st Augustine grass? We just bought a new house and have never really dealt with it. Everything I read says so not scarify or dethatch due to the stolons but there is SO MUCH dead grass…
you can still use a dethatcher as long as you're staying above the stolons. the major issue is st augustine runs off of central stolons as you already know. if they die you may need to remove some and then you can plant new plugs in those areas until they spread.
Hey Ginja, did a dethatching last week, mainly because my lawn was too thick last season(i felt like it was competing for space) and to remove dead debris from the winter. 80% looks better but 20% is very thin. Do u think my tttf will fill in a promote new growth. I would hate to seed those thin spots just to be too thick again.
Most tttf is not regenerating. I'd seed it
Sound good, I think I will do that next year. What are your thoughts about throwing down some seed after you do steps 2 and 3? Lastly throw some fertilizer down and allow mother nature to do her thing.

What are your thoughts on Urea 46 for a big wake up? BTW, got a SunJoe last year and it has been my favorite lawn tool since!
from the studies i've done there is little benefit to using urea until the ground temps are permanently above 50 degrees. most of the benefit occurs at 55 to 65 degrees. the primary issue is that urea is volatile and it in essence evaporates. even with ideal temps you can count on a 40% to 60% loss out the gates. its an interesting subject.

Every mid March I mow my lawn on the lowest setting and the run the scarifyer in two directions and then I lay down PGF complete. In central PA this is when it starts to get rainy and I find this gets plany of nutrients in the soil for when the lawn wakes up.
How are the three different perennial ryes doing in your front lawn? Which one is performing best for you?
They're all doing great. no surprise but the rpr is a tad lighter. they're all great options. its hard to beat the regenerating properties of the csi rpr blend.

I've read in several places that some don't recommend scarification on Kentucky bluegrass lawns because of how it grows out as opposed to up. Can someone please clarify? Thanks, I appreciate it!

You mention scarifier over core aeration. I'm not sure the lawn at my property has ever had core aeration , before I purchased the property. Would a scarifier aid in preventing compact soil the way core aeration does?
I have a Greenworks dethatcher but have considered getting a scarifier as well.

After watching a video or two of yours….. you really should focus on walking straight lines. Lawn looks good, stripes are as crooked as the elementary school bus driver lady’s front teeth.
