I am convinced this song is about Persephone. It talks about her journey into the ground to the Underworld, being bound to Hades, the change of the seasons tied to her passing.

This song always makes me want to smile, and at least consider dancing. I'm not sure why... and it makes me feel more in-touch with my magickal side.

Cartouche - In the 18th century, Louis Dominique Bourguignon is working with Malichot's gang but their ways are too 'unethical' for him. He hides out from Malichot and joins the army where he and his two new friends survive by hiding out on the battlefield. Together, they rob the general of his gold. Fleeing, they stop at an inn where they meet Venus, a beautiful gypsy who has been taken prisoner. He rescues her and she joins his gang. Returning to Paris, Bourguignon creates his own gang, acting under the name of Cartouche with most of Malichot's gang joining him. They make audacious robberies of the rich people and distribute the loot to the poor. Thus, Cartouche attracts the people's sympathies, Venus's love and hate from the police and Malichot. Malichot goes to the police to betray Cartouche but Cartouche can escape all the traps they set for him - except the entrapments of love. Eventually, the police use this against him and set a trap while he has a tryst with Venus in the countryside. He is captured but his men ambush the guards as they lead him away. In the scuffle that follows, Cartouche is saved by Venus who sacrifices her life to save him from harm. Cartouche and his men place Venus's body in an expensive carriage they stole earlier from a nobleman and roll the carriage in a lake. As the carriage slowly sinks, Cartouche tells his men to disperse as he vows to avenge the death of his beloved Venus - a way that he anticipates will lead him sooner or later to the gallows. Based on the very wild, gypsy-esque music, I presume they are talking about the movie Cartouche, in which said...piraty...guy rescues a gypsy girl, rather than the Egyptian frame for royal names. (Which makes a lot less sense.)
But beyond that, I must admit I'm confused. I would really have loved to hear the actual story behind this very engaging song.
The music is absolutely brilliant, but that's the effect all gypsy-esque music has on nearly anyone I think. There's something almost very nearly magical about the melody and instruments used that makes you want to join them in a wild, carefree dance. (Just listen to Cruxshadows - Deception, and the violin solo there that have a similar beat and feel to it, despite the music genera being vastly different.)
But if anyone knows why the band named the song what they did, I'd love to hear it. ^^

I was also confused about the title for a while! In this context, Cartouche refers to a restaurant in Prague that Blackmore's Night performed at, and they enjoyed it so much that they named the song after it as a tribute.

    From the Merriam-Webster dictionary: Cartouche
    1 : a gun cartridge with a paper case
2 : an ornate or ornamental frame
3 : an oval or oblong figure (as on ancient Egyptian monuments) enclosing a sovereign's name

Cannot figure out what 'cartouche' is referencing in this song, I doubt it is architecture... Maybe though the circle they used to draw around Egyptian names written in hieroglyphs to prevent rival magicians from being able to read the name properly. If they could not read the name they could not cast a spell on the person whose name it was? I wish there was an explanation somewhere.

+wordgal14 Figured i would reply here since no one seems to know what this song is actually about (which really isn't surprising considering). Cartouche actually refers to an old fashion restaurant in Prague that this song is named after. Apparently the place is pretty awesome and blackmore's night spent some time performing there, so they made this song as a tribute. To bad the place is closed down now =(
