Jeanne Moreau was also improvising (with the exception of two moments, when she thinks she sees Julién and when she approaches the hotel guard) - she was told by Louis Malle to just walk and look disillusioned, doing whatever she felt suitable for the situation and the mood. Also, most of the filming in this scene was done spontaneously, the people in the streets were real passers-by, no actors. Now, how's that for coolness!
Incredible? Hardly. Any decent musician ought to be able to noodle tastefully, endlessly... While scoring a film, busking on da corner or sitting in their kitchen(basement for you drummers!) ;)
Someone walking the streets to a jazz score? No violence? No shape-shifting aliens? No utterly nondescript “actors”? It would bore people rigid these days. Thankfully, we were born in an earlier age when we could appreciate the beauty of this evocative scene. Let us also be thankful to film, which enables our forgetful minds to be reminded of the culture which existed, delighted, and educated us.
The cinematography is captivating and, of course, the musical score is enchanting. The scene had me enthralled up to the moment it began to rain. I should have liked to see the lighting on Jeanne Moreau's face brighten and dim as she passed under the overhead lights. While I understand that her character is lost in thought; autonomic muscular reaction to cold rainfall stinging her face and flooding her eyes would compel her to respond in some fashion. Regardless, the film is magnificent.
Both this cinema clip and the music are at the highest level. They are both of their time, therefore not timeless, but brilliant for any and every generation to experience. Respect!
Stunning. Jeanne Moreau is one the most alluring women of the silver screen. Miles Davis" music is absolutely haunting. RIP Jeanne, Miles and Louis, the genius director Louis Malle, of course! Stunning and haunting.
With all the bad that came out of the Covid thing, and my acquisition of streaming services, I got a 4K TV and "discovered" French films and actresses. Not that I had never seen any, but I developed a strong attachment to many French actresses. In the times past it was mainly Isabelle Adjani. Then more recently It started with Christa Theret, then Marion Cotillard, then Sophie Marceau, then a whole lot of others. Now I am trying to get to old French movies with these great classics by the likes of Anna Karina (I know technically Danish but became French), Jeanne Moreau, and others. If I wasn't so old I would try to learn the French language. So many classic French movies made in France and never set up with English subtitles.
I love this movie and this music! Miles Davis you have never been so good! Well yeah you have been, but I so love your music in this film. You left 29 years ago today but have never been forgotten and in these 29 years you have been rediscover by music lovers looking for great music that move them. And You Do!!!
Miles is the COOLEST!!!!!! He improvised the whole score, including the piano part (which plays a standard minor-key turn-around). True, the changes he is playing over repeat the same 3 chords over a standard bar structure, but the thing is HE IMPROVISED THE WHOLE THING!!!!!!! Can you imagine the power of his embouchure to get that piano sound!!!!!!!!!!
Nedo Marco (Milano).
R.I.P. Jeanne Moreau, one of my favorite actress that inspired me with her natural talents. For me her acting was so "organic" and effortless, her unique beauty, voice and haunting gaze stood out. You will be missed.
Don't know why this showed up in my recommendations and I don't know what's all about, but it gave me goosebumps and got me tear eyed. No doubt the music was a bit part of it, but also the cinematography, the ability to capture moods, feelings, situations without saying a word...
DRAGA NE PLAČI , NE TUGUJ MOGU LI TI POMOĆI . JA SAM TU . JA SAM TU TVOJ NAJBOLJI PRIJATELJ . TI SI MOJA LJUBAV I U DOBRU I U ZLU JA BIĆU TU .NE ZABORAVI ME ! TVOJ GOCI !
The 'magic meeting' of film director Louis Malle, with an actress and singer Jeanne Moreau and jazz genius Miles Davis. Triple talent. Spectacular. Magnificent. Amazing.
The soundtrack for Ascenseur pour l'Échafaud was available as one side of a very cheap LP (Art Blakey being on the other side). It was my first Miles Davis album, and many years before I ever saw Jeanne Moreau on the screen.
This is the sign of an exceptional actress and personality - just a woman, walking down a street in black-and-white with underlining jazz music, and you can't take your eyes off of her!!!
Jeanne Moreau & Maurice Ronet in "Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud"!!!!! VERY BEST CINEMA!!! BLACK & WHITE MASTERPIECE!!! BEAUTIFUL ACTRESS!!! THANKS!!!

RIP Jeanne Moreau

:'(
I just learned today, that Miles Davis recorded the score by improvising the music directly while watching the scene(s). How incredible!!!
@@diddywahdaddy So cool! Moreau and Davis, can't ask for more!
He was on a tour that failed to come together and was offered the gig inadvertently.

Incredible? Hardly. Any decent musician ought to be able to noodle tastefully, endlessly... While scoring a film, busking on da corner or sitting in their kitchen(basement for you drummers!) ;)
I love how she basically does nothing in this film but wander the streets at night searching for her lover - and it's utterly captivating.
Imagine walking the streets of Paris at night in this age.
@@patricias5122 Oh my God, yes!
Move on love he ain't interested, cancelled
vale pensar mais sobre isso...
You can feel the longing just from this scene.

Jeanne Moreau et Miles Davis. Que demander de plus ?! Perfection absolue.
Beautiful Jeanne Moreau with Miles in a Louis Malle film. It's almost unreal. RIP to this great actress.
👋
She's so sexy.
You could be a student of film, jazz or both, study this clip 100x and still learn something from it every time.
Masterful.

Yes. Depending on what kind of student you are, it could be a lot higher than a hundred times.
You re right, so right....
Only Miles can elevate the scene to a statement of art
Both this cinema clip and the music are at the highest level. They are both of their time, therefore not timeless, but brilliant for any and every generation to experience. Respect!
She was special, beautiful, and talented!
Who could fail to find that beautiful, interesting, and at least somewhat moving?

Thank you for acknowledging ALL of the major players in this clip. A gorgeous piece of cinematography.
Probably the sexiest thing ever filmed.
This is so beautiful. So truly French. So deeply rooted.
Rooted?
Everything Miles could imagine was something he could play. Straight from his mind through the magic trumpet and into the world it went. Genius.
One of the most elegant, alluring, and talented actresses in the history of cinema.
Thank you for posting this, Cebolas.
Yes but she's no Shirley Stoler.

Where has all the beauty and talent gone!!! Cool and class all the way..
This is from the spellbinding, great movie Elevator to the Gallows. Not sure why that is not noted here....
It's a great film and I have watched it many times. Musical score, the actors, the fashion and the time. Nothing comparable today sadly...

Utterly captivating. Adore Miles Davis.🌷🌷🌷
If you look up the word "charisma" in the dictionary, you'll see a picture of Jeanne Moreau. Absolutely intoxicating.
Miles was an improvising musician, just handed out some basic scores to the musicians and played on the spot while looking at the images. Good stuff.
