- Brussels Jazz Weekend proudly presents: Off The Record! In this online video series, jazz aficionado Frederik Goossens highlights 12 must-listen jazz records. Always passionately presented and accompanied by the best stories, Off The Record is there for any music enthusiast, and not just the die-hard jazz fanatic.
This time Frederik takes us to Paris, together with jazz legend Miles Davis. It was there he arranged the soundtrack for 'Ascenseur pour l'échafaud', a French movie starring Jeanne Moreau. Safe to say the music was better than the film - and it marked the beginning of modal jazz.
All rights to the music used in this video belong to Fontana Records / Universal Music Group. 'Off The Record' merely borrows the music for educational purposes.

What a great video. Thank you! Very informative.
Thanks for this fantastic video. This album is by far one of my favorites and I heard a lot of stuff about its making, but your explanation is not only informational, but you have the sensibility to approach what really counts, the atmosphere. I agree that this album was a turning point on Miles mind and heart, THANK YOU !!! Great channel!

What a great video!
The first time i hear someone acknowledge how "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud" is a significant precursor to "Kind of blue". Thank you ! ;D There is a sort of brisk, fresh simplicity to KoB that he seems to have come to in precisely this recording. I think one even hears it at times in the few concerts made with that band such as ua-cam.com/video/jc7p1TbZqhQ/v-deo.html
One could put the KoB sleeve notes of Bill Evans straight on this record, too.
