Actually Jolof rice is from Senegal, I am a Gambian and I can tell you that Jolof was one of the seven kingdoms of the Wolof tribes dating back to even before colonialization. My theory is that a Nigerian must have visited one of Senegal’s Wolof Kingdoms (most likely Jolof) tasted it, loved it and brought the Unmastered version back to Nigeria and named it after the place he tried it thus the Jolof rice and the difference in taste and the recipe. @@godwinejiofor8064 it's kinda true. The argument came about because of competition between Ghana and Nigeria. It wasnt really about proving that we have the best jollof rice rather that we have a better dish than the other country as ghanaians tend to argue with Nigerians about things. And it so happened to be jollof rice because it's one of the recipes that we both have but make distinctly different unlike the other recipes such as agege bread which they call Ghana bread but actually came from Nigeria. I actually noticed that the yoruba give credit to where a dish originates from but Ghana tends to claim it as their own. E.g. ewa agoyin from the agoyin ethnicity, agege bread from agege, jollof rice from wollof kingdom, etc. Either that or they keep the same name for the dish they got from elsewhere and dont rename it. But it's not to say that it isnt Nigerian food as its part of our culture but not an original thing we made.
The Senegalese Jollof is the original! Jollof is the name the British used to call the Wollof people of Senegal and Gambia. Jollof is one of the six kingdoms of the Wollof and is a region in modern day Senegal. Nanaaba you did a great job! I am Wollof from Senegambia and this dish is not an easy one to cook.
Tips for cooking fish “Jollof” include using Thai Fish sauce instead of dried or fermented fish. Use fewer onions for the sauce and the stuffing for the fish goes in a hole the size of a finger. Do it on one side only for each piece of fish to accommodate those who may not like it.
@@user-rm9nc2kv2g I'm Ghanaian and I totally agree with you there...one of my favorite restaurants in Philly was a Senegalese restaurant called Fatou & Fama and their food was always exceptional... they broke my heart when they closed down 😩💔
Hey there! Appart from the curry and the ginger you were spot on! You also don’t want your sauce as thick just so the rice doesn’t stick. I’m impressed tho. You make us Senegalese proud. Thank you :)
In Senegal, there were a lot of Kingdoms, Jolof was one of them and one of it's Kings was Alboury N'Diaye, so I want to tel to our Ghanaen and Nigerians brothers and sisters that jolof rice comes from Senegalese Thiébou Djieunn. Jolof, Olof, Wolof all come from Galsen(Senegal).
Hi Nana! Now dis is a unique way of prepping rice. I guess dis is d reason why Senegalese rice beats Nigeria and Ghana jollof rice, lol. Tnx for sharing dear

Many Senegalese Brothers and Sisters came to NYC back in the 90's, and I love and loved them... They became family.... my family and I was introduced to this dish and we still buy it.... Now, from you, my sister, I can make it for my family....Thank you
That’s their Jollof rice. That’s how Senegalese and Gambians cook their Jollof rice, which is the original. The have both the red and white jollof rice which is also called, ‘Benechi“ . All other West Africans borrowed jollof rice and created their own way. Thanks for sharing. Good on!
Good job Dear. I have to say though you don’t need the curry in it( not part of the traditional dish. Also we put more Pearsley in the fish relish than onions. You can also take some Bissap the hibiscus leaves that are called “oseille” in French, cover the dried fermented small piece of fish, attach it together and put in the stew. It gives a super good taste yet lemony. You can also have some shrimp in the rice and some tamarind seasoned with 2 to 3 tablespoons of the stew and set aside for those who like the flavor. I have been in Ghana for 3 years and my favorite dish there is your okra stew. Your thieboudiene is very well done thank you for choosing to make this video. 🙏
Waouh Mama. This definetly Senegalese dish, our national one thanks for sharing. We are proud that this dish is now popular specially in west african. Seeing other people like you making so perfectly make us happy. Thank you Mama. Please continue making other Senegalese dishes 🤗🤗
This is very similar to the red rice I grew up eating. Red rice is a staple Gullah people from Sea Islands of South Carolina make and eat. You add veggies, meat (sausage usually), rice and tomato sauce. DELICIOUS!

You are such a beautiful soul to watch! Best wishes to you and you family! Keep up the great work!
Four hours to make this amazing and delicious meal. Every hour was worth it!! I have followed the ingredients, recipe and prep to the T. Instead of cassava, I had to use jasmine rice because the stores in the area only sold leaves. My family loved the spices, the flavor, and the texture. This is the original "jollof" rice.
Yes Nanaaba!!!!! Thanks so much for sharing. I will be making Thieboudienne for an event called Nights In Africa and your video just brought it all back to me. As usual your presentation is so beautiful and so simple, that I am inspired to try my hand at all types of dishes I’ve tasted but never made at home. Thank you so much for your delicious recipe. I tried it yesterday and nothing can compete with the taste of this tieboudienne😋😋😋 But to be honest, it takes for ever to cook this delicious dish. Folks, if you want to succeed with this, do it on a weekend when you have plenty of time. It's a No Rush food!
Poeple saying is like jollof rice, actually "jolof" is coming from the word "wolof" which is the name of the biggest ethnic group of Senegal. This recepe took some liberties, the start was good but we don't do a tomato sauce (no red pepper belly please, it will give a different taste) but a tomato broth with all the vegetables (stir fried your onions with the "yet", your nokoss and put tomato paste when it's done that's it, add some water then you put all your vegetables, your fish), and we steam the rice before putting it in the broth.
Oh come on,it doesn’t have to be the exact way . She didn’t do this, she didn’t do that... Breathe! Who know exactly how the recipe has to be? Where you there the very first time somebody cooked it?
Why are you all so triggered because he pointed out some common techniques found in Senegalese cooking? And why does he need to be a chef in order to give an opinion??? Damn near everyone can cook this dish in Senegal. Its the National dish of the country. Lol His observations were correct and its HIS culture.
Additionally, it’s pronounce Cheb-bu-gen. Senegal was colonized by the french and Thiebounjen is also written as ceebujen and if you search that you’ll find a plethora of french videos of this same dish. I agree with you most folks think of jollof rice but truly it’s Wolof. If you said jollof in Senegal host country nationals would think you are referring to the ethnic group Joloa/Djola in the Casamance region (Ziginchoir) of Senegal. Great video for English translation!
@@ScottLe No Jollof was a kingdom in the center of Senegal so nobody in the country will think about the Jollas because they live in the south near the Guineas and they speak Jolla not Wolof

Tips for cooking fish “Jollof” include using Thai Fish sauce instead of dried or fermented fish. Use fewer onions for the sauce and the stuffing for the fish goes in a hole the size of a finger. Do it on one side only for each piece of fish to accommodate those who may not like it.
I remember eating this for special occasions or whenever I asked my Godmother for it...I was born at Dakar Senegal...miss those good old days..
Awwwww!!! The original Jolof rice 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Yes indeed! I hope you give it a shot! It is so delicious! To think fish could make jollof taste this great is mind boggling ❤️
@@NanaabasKitchen Oh!!! I'll definately will!! Love your vlogs!! Much love from Montreal 😉🤗
I LITERALLY CAME HERE TO MAKE THIS EXACT COMMENT! YES IM SHOUTING 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’m Nigerian but I won’t even lie, Senegalese food is one of the best
Am East African but whenever I watch west African recepies, am impressed. Well done 👍
Hi Nana! Now dis is a unique way of prepping rice. I guess dis is d reason why Senegalese rice beats Nigeria and Ghana jollof rice, lol. Tnx for sharing dear
Thank you Cynthia 🙏🏾❤️❤️ they say, the original jollof comes from Senegal! I’m sold on this fact! I tell you 🙏🏾❤️❤️❤️
@@NanaabasKitchen yess beautiful, actually Jollof means Senegal

@@NanaabasKitchen you are perfect ❤
That's how we season fish in the Caribbean! Yummy!!!
Yes, this was how I had jollof rice in the Gambia. Delicious
Delicious indeed! I agree with you 100%❤️🙏🏾
I tried this recipe today!! And all I can say is bussing!!! This tchep was sensational!! May Jesus bless you, may you be prosperous!!

Waouh Mama. This definetly Senegalese dish, our national one thanks for sharing. We are proud that this dish is now popular specially in west african. Seeing other people like you making so perfectly make us happy. Thank you Mama. Please continue making other Senegalese dishes 🤗🤗
I love this, haven't tried this yet ,but guessed it's very delicious 🤤🤤
Big love from Mauritania 🇲🇷
I'm from Manila and this looks so yummy! I want to try making this. Thank you for sharing this masterpiece :)
This is very similar to the red rice I grew up eating. Red rice is a staple Gullah people from Sea Islands of South Carolina make and eat. You add veggies, meat (sausage usually), rice and tomato sauce. DELICIOUS!
I haven't even watched the video and I can't pronounce the dishes name but based on the thumbnail photo, I need this nowww😭😭😭 It look so good!😋
Kim 🙈😂😂😅😅 I know exactly about that feeling 🙏🏾❤️
Helping with the pronunciation, say it as ‘chebu jen “. She has the French spelling.
This dish is so attractive and complex. Will definitely give it a try. Each component of it is its own star.
I've made this dish more times than I can count! Everyone who eats it loves it! This dish does take a while to cook, but it's always worth the wait. I think this dish is an aphrodisiac😍
Thanks for sharing
My God, this recipe is the ONE!! I have yet to have had any fish dish like this, Im over 50 yeats old and a foodie.
This dish make me proud. Thank you for sharing.
You've inspired me to make this, an update will follow.
Visited Senegal in 2019. The thieboudienne was delicious. Thanks for the recipe.
Darling! I have been looking for this recipe in English for the longest time! I have seen other videos but yours is the best thus far! I was able to find all the ingredients as you listed it out so well for your viewers! Thank you! It came out so wonderful❤️! I appreciate you darling, and I will continue to watch your other videos! You are such a beautiful soul to watch! Best wishes to you and you family! Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much for the feedback 🥰🥰🙏🏽
Where did you find the cured fish? Any other name is goes by?
Four hours to make this amazing and delicious meal. Every hour was worth it!! I have followed the ingredients, recipe and prep to the T. Instead of cassava, I had to use jasmine rice because the stores in the area only sold leaves. My family loved the spices, the flavor, and the texture. This is the original "jollof" rice.
Senegal is such a lovley place we are soooo underrated
I love how so many veggies are incorporated 😍😍
That’s the other secret! The veggies 🙏🏾❤️❤️
Am from Senegal. It's a pleasure seeing it here 😘😘😘😘😘😘
Senegalese jollof rice is so delicious.
Happy to have you as teacher beautiful Mrs. We do love you and your receipts.
Yes Nanaaba!!!!! Thanks so much for sharing. I will be making Thieboudienne for an event called Nights In Africa and your video just brought it all back to me. Being an African American of East African descent, adding the West African cuisine to my profile makes it much easier with Chefs like you. Blessings and thanks again🤗
Wishing you all the best with your event 🙏🏼👋
Our national thieboudjiene 🇸🇳🇸🇳🇸🇳🇸🇳just the best in Africa
Oh my sister... You are the queen now!! Senegalese food has always been my favorite in West Africa but it’s very difficult to find good recipes and technique. As usual your presentation is so beautiful and so simple, that I am inspired to try my hand at all types of dishes I’ve tasted but never made at home. Please, please do yassa poulet (with green olives) next. Thank you and God bless you:)❤️

Greetings from Greece, we love our African cousins and all their recipes, tried it and it was amazing
I moved to California in 2004 from Senegal. I have not had thiebou jenn since 2007 I think. I salivated all over myself. 😍😍. 👏 👏 👏 👏
Thank you so much for your delicious recipe. I tried it yesterday and nothing can compete with the taste of this tieboudienne😋😋😋
But to be honest, it takes for ever to cook this delicious dish. Folks, if you want to succeed with this, do it on a weekend when you have plenty of time. It's a No Rush food!
This is the real joll of rice maker.
Girl, you really nailed it. I am from The Gambia and this is one of my country's recipe. You are so organize. Love you kitchen utensils. Stay bless.
Thank you and God bless you 🙏🏾❤️
The grouper looks so beautiful and clean! And yes, I am envisioning this it is a masterpiece!
Now you go and make a video and post it then, as you are such an expert chef.
Wow! Are you for real? I've been binge-watching your videos for the last few hours and this masterpiece here has got to be the best one yet. Beyond amazing!
Looks incredible! Even though other nations boast more when it comes to jollof rice & West African cuisine I've found that Senegal/ Gambia & Liberia are the best.
Thanks for your support 🙏🏾😍
I'm Ivorian and this is one of the best dishes I've ever ate. It's one of the most popular dishes in Ivory Coast. You know what? Senegalese food is hands down the best food in Africa without question. Mark my words.
