I love this documentary. Joe reenacting and narrating, a remarkable and haunting little soundtrack that I found on the composer's website years ago and have never been able to find since. But my favorite bit of trivia about it is that the narrator plays the guy who grows the weed in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

I've watched this video several times, as well as Touching the Void. So much wisdom in this dicumentry that has applicationss to our entire lefe. There are no guarantees in life that --- you give yourself 100 percent to an endeavor with the highest expectations that you will see success... and sometimes it is just not meant to happen. As the expression says: "Tht dog ain't gonná hunt."

Joe's story and Tony's story are so Similar...The pressure of a knot too big to go through a karabiner. Thank god Simon cut him free..

Re: "dondamon"s comment. It is so depressing to see how ignorant many young people are!! To assume that people have always had instant communication abilities anywhere in the world is just so wrong! Even now, living only 10 miles from Boulder CO, I have no cell reception in my mountain location. All over this country, many backcountry places have no reception. And this is in 2024! Dear child, did you ever hear about the 1980s or 1990s? It seems like all the time on your devices have not helped you in your education about the world. As the former Great Leader would say: "SAD!" And remember, even when Simpson got back to base, they were some days away from a hospital, where insurance coverage was the big issue. Read the book!

    Joe was a fighter.
To think of him climbing tis face on a previously shattered knee and femur in the Andes fall, is staggering.

Whatever it takes to make a climber, I have almost none of those qualities and am poorer for the want of them.

You just said the sun never shines on the face then you say the sun melted the ice on the face. Which is it?

Man how I wish they had left that rope in place and maybe they didn't have extra ropes and didn't think they'd need to go back across that ice covered. If only they'd have thought we will leave it just in case. May these brave men RIP. Brave souls and dear friends.

I know they climb mountains "because it's there" but the whole time, expense, effort and risk seems pointless.

I just don't believe touching the void why didn't simon call for rescue for help straight away or need help himself straight away ? The doctors weren't even worried about them! To go through that ordeal it would have to be an emergency but they weren't bothered and he was fine! Just a writer

Who would they have called, and how? They were in the middle of nowhere; they had a friend at base camp, but there was no way to contact him. It was the mid -1980's, so it wasn't common practice to carry phones around; and the mountaineers had enough to carry without those bulky devices on top! They might have had a phone at the base camp, but it was unlikely to have good enough signal to contact anyone, and the nearest city was several hours away even if they could get through to a hospital.
Though, I'm not sure how to justify the response from the medical team in Peru; that was just weird!

Most people don’t care much about going out of their way to help these daredevil types.they figure if they’re dumb enough to do this kind of thing then they can pay for their stupidity
