I’ve done that many times but didn’t know the trick about feeling the back of the pump to see if it gets hot. I always learn a little something from these videos.
Mine is easy to remember which way to reinstall because that set screw on the outside of the impeller housing goes on the engine side. However, and I could be wrong, but it looks like yours goes with that set screw away from the engine. Must have something to do with engine rotation. Either way, I find it a good, easy way to remember, because over the years, there has been a lot of confusion about how to remember which way it goes. You just have to know which side that set screw goes on your particular engine.
I know how to change the impeller, but I was putting the plug back in the “elbow” right next to the impeller, and I realized the threads are pretty much gone. It’s a 1998 Ski Nautique with a carbureted 351 Ford engine. I took the pump and the elbow off (what a bear getting it off those hoses!), and my question is simply this: is it easier to put the new elbow on first, or the pump/pulley assembly? I’m guessing the elbow, but I don’t think I’ve ever replaced it, so I wanted to be sure. Thank you!
1:01 can you tell me if, on the port side engine, the pump is attached opposite if it is a left hand drive? just heard in the video it goes opposite, but it doesn’t want to attach that way. I put on a new pump, fried the impeller, I wasn’t the one who took off the pump so I don’t know if it was the same as the starboard side.
Can you do a video on how to replace the electronic ignition pcm with distributor and coil? I have an older engine and I think one of these days it probably will go out. But it one time I tried to take my distributor out well you know what I'm talking about electronic one with no spark plug wires in it. But I couldn't get it out. It was like it was stuck to the block. Do you have any ideas how to fix that?
How do you replace the 1.75" hose from the thermostat housing that goes down to the engine block? Can I just remove the hoses or do I need to take parts off?
It will not suck water through the system and shred your impeller. I found this out firsthand when I mounted my pump with the cam screw out, as shown in the video.
We should NEVER use Vaseline or petroleum based products on neoprene or rubber seals or O rings. Use a silicone based lube with or without Teflon. I learned this lesson the hard way when my Oring on my water strainer swelled to an unusable size. I use dish soap on my impellers to provide some lubrication until lake water can make it to the pump. I get the idea that the fins will find their proper direction but it's always a good idea to take pictures for reference and put it back as you found it.
I wonder the same thing. I’m about to test mine. I had a mobile mechanic come out and while he was here I had him replace the impeller. Now my boat just overheated. So I’m about to diagnose it
I'm having trouble with the new hose and clamp leaking on the intake (bottom) side of the pump. It's a nice clean cut hose, brand new clamp, still keeps dripping out the top of the hose. Anyone have any pointers in getting the hose to seat? I'm running on a bucket, so no excess pressure coming from garden hose. The clamp is tighten down.
First time boat owner here! Thank you so much! My nautique is running great because of you!

Thank you for taking the time to do this vid. This will help me out immensely.
Vince, how about the FULL rebuild of the G21 Raw Water Pump? I just can't find a video. Have you done one?

Mine has it on the outside like in the video, if youre looking toward the rear of the boat the crankshaft turns counterclockwise
Thanks Vince!!

Thank you for the knowledge and video! What would happen if the pump was installed 180 out?

Using some dish soap is a great tip!
Just curious if the raw water pump gets hot what would that indicate? Thanks in advance.

Probably installed upside down. Try installing with the cam screw inward. Check the impeller too and make sure it’s still in good condition.

I have got one of the three boats to assemble the pump back together. That will not get tight. What could that be?
Maybe you stripped or cross threaded that bolt?
I replace it every year!
