- Sangeeta (Rekha) is a young, strong and idealistic girl. She is 25 years old, but unlike her contemporaries, she is still not married. The reason for this is her being a member of a poor family. Her father left the family; Her mother is an old homemaker; Her younger sister Geeta (Madhu Kapoor) is a young widow; Her nephews have to go to school while their father, her brother (Raj Babbar) is an inebriated and unemployed man. All the members of this family live in one little house. She is the only one who takes care of them. She is the only one who works to support the family. She is concerned for her nephews' future and makes her best to bring them up and educate them.
However, secretly, she dreams of the day when she could also have her own family, husband and children. Three men enter her life, namely Amol Palekar, Kanwaljeet Singh and Rakesh Roshan, but destiny has something different for her. Will this day come ever?

मेरे जीवन की ये शायद पहली मूवी थी जिसे मैने गुडगांव के अजीत सिनमा हाॅल मे नाईट शो मे देखा था। 9 से 12 उस वक्त मै 22 साल का था।
बहुत ही प्यारी मूवी ।पूरी टीम बधाई के पात्र।
और आजकल की फिल्मो पर थूकने का मन भी नही करता।लानत है आजकल के वाहियात फिल्ममेकर्स पर । इतनी मेहनत भी करते है रू भी खर्च करते है पर रिज्लट ज़ीरो
I watched this movie on DD National in Bioscope Programme . Bioscope used to telecast Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 pm to 12 am. When I watched the third part, I cried a lot on Wednesday.
I still remember that. I felt very sad for Amol Palekar's character Gangaram. Rekha Ji's last dialogue makes me cry every time I watch this Movie .

A very sad ending though. I wish sangeeta's character could have gotten married in the end as she really wanted that.
I normally check the end of the movie before watching the full movies since I don't watch movie seriously in depth..Thank God I did...can't tolerate sad tragic ending at all

If this movie is made today, all the women in the house would be working no matter what. The big brother would have been kicked out of the house long back. But this movie expresses very well the frustration of a woman who unfairly needs to take responsibility for everything and everybody at home. Very well made and unbeatable performances.

How come Bollywood doesn't make movie like this one. Now they copy and pasted the Hollywood movies.
Really master piece
No doubt, the film is nice, all the actors are highly skilled, but I highly recommend to watch the original Tamil one Aval Oru Thodarkathai. The original has a different level of intensity. The genius called K. Balachander had pulled off stellar performances from the newcomers.

Even in 1982 there were women like my mother who worked because they loved to work and excelled at it! Here this film shows that a woman works only to fend for the family
Yes this film shows working as something forced and that women want to live at home and rest and enjoy. Your mother was ahead of time.
Another thing she could have married and fulfilled her responsibilities. Unnecessary sacrifice is shown to make viewers teary and emotional.

जीवन जीने का नाम है परन्तु हकीकत में आम आदमी की जिन्दगी हालात परेशानी मुश्किलों से जूझकर उतार चढ़ाव भरी जिन्दगी जीना मजबूरी बन जाती है।
रेखा ने एक सशक्त नारी शक्ति की अदाकारी से अपने किरदार को जीवंत कर दिया। अपने केरियर का बेहतरीन अभिनय किया था। अमोल पालेकर साहब का जवाब नहीं उनका पहली बार डांस देखने का मौका मिला किसी फिल्म में।
कंवलजीत राजबब्बर सुलोचना लटकार का किरदार सराहनीय था। टी रामाराव के निर्देशन में बहुत भावनात्मक कहानी के साथ साथ संगीत भी बढ़िया था।
