That quote is beautiful, Jay.
Tyler is lucky little girl. Wok bench looks great.
Absolutely love that note.
It's beautiful...lucky daughter!!!
Such a good dad. She is a very lucky girl.
The bench looks outstanding and letting your daughter choose the base color was a wise move. You seem like a good father.
Really nice work. Even better Daddy-ing. Cheers!
Thanks It turned out great Jay thanks again.
Jay, You left us hangin! You know we wanted to see her reaction first time seeing it!
She hasn't seen it yet. Christmas gift :)
It’s beautiful! Please share her reaction, can’t wait!!!
if it's not too late, you could add some red on there, I think another personal touch, paint the palm of your hand with that red paint and put your hand print on the bottom side of the table.
I finished my workbench with Danish oil. It's been fantastic for years, with just the right amount of glue resistance. Yours turned out fantastic. I'm sure your daughter will love it.
That looks great!!
You're making us other fathers look bad, Jay. That's a great workbench that she'll love for a long, long time. Thanks for sharing.
Looks Great! And your audio sounds much much better :)
Recorded in my closet rather than my shop.
Cool color! Excellent job dad!
Those oscillating tools are great, so handy
The bench turned out great looks great in that color. Hopefully she was very excited to get it. Great job
I’ve always enjoyed your videos, and this one is no different. Love the workbench for your daughter, and the sentiment in your hidden message. Keep up the good work!
That is a awesome bench and that little message was a great idea. I built those saw horses when I watched that video years ago. You're right that work great and last a long time. It's great seeing how far you have come. Again great work as usual.
So in a few years your daughter will be doing her own woodworking videos!
Got a hoot watching this. We made almost a carbon copy of yours for our granddaughters. They even picked almost the same color as well :) Love the dog bone tenons. Wish I had a CNC!
Will we get to see her reaction to seeing it? (no pressure)
Most likely. It's for Christmas so I need to hide it till then.
5:27 - I saw it comin'... I tried to warn you... Alas, you didn't hear my yells... ::and then I made the same face as you did:: Haha
The hidden note is awesome. Love the base color with the top.
Good job, Dad! 👍👍
Awesome gift for your future partner.
Work bench looks great. Love the note. Got sawdust in my eye after reading it.
This will be a real treat for her for many years. Looking forward to the inevitable drawer build when she starts collecting her own tools she needs to store. Just sayin’ - I predict this will happen sometime in the future.
Once again I am adding my two cents. If you like Jay's videos, let me tell you. He is just as nice in person and a great guy. Now, I want to vent. We want to see daughters reaction to the bench! Come on Jay, what are you thinking?
I'd think calling Festool and asking about the swirls would be your best approach. I don't own any Festool tools but, for what they charge I'd sure hope they had fantastic customer support.
I have some of your 2x4 vids bookmarked and have used them a few times. Much more accessible type of woodworking.
That is probably the world's finest small workbench. I'm sure she'll love it and I love the idea of the hidden plaque. Now I'm thinking you should build in a hidden pocket somewhere...
Jay, I am sure that Tyler Kay will really appreciate your dedication plaque when she is old enough to absorb its wisdom. Well done Dad.
:You are a good dude! Your daughter will love it and will most likely have it for years and years... when she outgrows it she will no doubt repurpose it into a bigger workbench, craft table (what have you). The plaque is a fantastic touch. For any dad's that watch this--be a good dad even when it isn't easy.
"HAY'. Less of the stupid donkey. Great looking project. I wish my daughters/ grand kids would have joined me in the shop.
Nice touch with the hidden message
Great color; love the bench; love the motivation - I have 2 girls. I have the RO 90 and have used the hell out of it for years. I rarely use it in Random Orbit mode but it does work okay in Random orbit & Delta modes. I take the head off and clean it after every use (it needs it), and I replace the hook and loop pad fairly often - yours looks pretty ratty. That might help. Happy Holiday!
The multitool oscillating tool is the greatest.
Total guess at your sander issue here: Is there any chance that the sander has some sort of clog inside that's making the extractor not work as well, causing a small amount of the dust and loose abrasive to stay behind on the wood? Or maybe the extractor itself is slightly underperfoming?
jay i noticed that you have the control for suction turned all the way up on the vac. I had the same problem with swirl marks if you turn it all the way down and use the softer pad the swirl marks will go away.
Jay, the sanding backing pad on the Rotex is a WEAR item (frankly, on any sander!). You can actually get different grades of backing pads for the Rotex, from hard, medium, or soft.
If you are trying to level out a surface to flat, then use the hard pad. It will help to produce a flat surface and level out glue up for table tops, panels, etc.
If you are trying to finish sand a surface, you should be using the MEDIUM pad. It more forgiving and leaves less swirl marks.
If you are doing curved or organic shapes, you would use the SOFT pad.
The differences are night and day with the different pads. They definitely do wear out over time (and you should be using an interference pad if you are using mesh paper).
With Mesh sanding paper, the hooks on the backing pad can be too long, and under the pressure of sanding they can poke through the mesh, causing additional swirl marks, and wearing out the backing pad prematurely. This can be true on almost all sanders, which is why a lot of box store mesh paper comes with an interference pad (but it's a real cheap one).
Try changing the backing pad on the sander, and use an interference pad (festool makes and sells them in a 2 pack for the Rotex)!
I have all three. Same results. It's just not for me.
Red Bench = Dad. Blue Bench = Great Dad !
On my dad's Festool sander I could only get rid of the swirls in the fine setting and most importantly by strictly moving slowly over the surface of the workpiece.
5:05 Yes! Those sawhorses are how I found you! I've made 4. The only thing I'd complain about them is how the legs are connected for the first screw. I can't clamp them well enough with the leg sticking up at an angle. I don't know the solution. Once that first screw is in, it's fine.
Also, you didn't link to the video in the description.
Sos de lujo pibe.
"There's an idiot donkey that's running this particular machine"
Never change Jay, never change!
My 6 year old is asking for a work bench. Guess I have to add another project to the pile.
Oh I see she chose the colour.
Good.
Did you have to keep her out of the shop or make sure you got it done while she was at school? Part of the fun. She saw the lumber part but not the paint.
She hasn't been in the shop since I started this video. Which kinda sucks. I'm trying to hide it till Christmas
@@JayBates Good luck. Just bought a bunch of Lego Friends sets and hiding them is difficult.
I'm very interested in the issue with the Festool Rotex sander. I picked one up at a pawn shop. It was in good shape just dirty. I believe the previous owner has been sanding marble or granite counter tops with needed on the grade of sanding discs that came with it. I haven't used it much but I'd hate to find out it's leaving pig trails.
I have an old Craftsman random orbit sander that has a swirl control ring that wears out from time to time. When that starts to wear out, I get swirl marks. Maybe that's the case with yours? It's just a thought...
Just had my $650 Mira deros die on me after less than three years of hobby use. They originally quoted me $175 to fix it, but it was the electronic speed controller that died. I got them to cover the part, but I’m still out about $80 with shipping and repair fees.
I hope we get to see when she finds out it’s for her and she realizes she picked out the color.
Me too.
Have you checked the pad? I don’t claim to be an expert by any means but if it is not extracting the dust that I believe causes more swirls. Have the dust ports been gummed up with sap, finish etc?
I’m on my 3rd pad. More expensive than a cheap sander 😂 but it is still a good sander and I bought mine back in 94. I don’t use it flat out by any means. Often use my battery ros’s. But when I want to use it it is still a goer
I love that router, did you make the base plate?
It came with it. I have a laser so I may cut some out for it though.
Dog Bone tenons❤❤❤❤
Looks like Man City blue. Maybe you have a Premier League fan in your family.
Imagine if you would have used baby pink instead. Now THAT would have been cool!!
Your sander makes swirls becouse you move it way to fast.
Speed should be about 1 inch per second.
try it with a pencil.
Make circels and move your hand fast over the paper.
You get long swirls
Move slow and you get tight cirkels close together.
No reveal? That's just cruel. :)
Well known that Festool use plastic gears in their tools instead of alloy. That is why I won’t spend the money on their tools. Their design is superb but construction seems cheep to me. Their whole premise as a company is formed on the domino joinery system.
What? no reaction from the client?
Christmas gift.
Should be pink?
Hi Jay. Just offering a possible cause for the Rotex problem… it might be the bearing under the pad is degraded. On most random orbital sanders, it’s a bearing mounted on an eccentric post to make the random orbital motion. The “sealed” bearing gets dust in it and starts to stick and starts to grab more making the sander dig more, make swirls more, and make it less controllable. I have replaced a couple. It’s an easy fix. Hope this helps.
I wouldn't be surprised to learn that a bad bearing is the culprit. I think AVE did a review on their track saw, and, if I remember correctly, he found a cheap bearing on the main shaft for the arbor. I never owned any Festool stuff, but it seems like most of their stuff is overpriced for the "quality" you actually get.
Tyler was right. That color looks awesome with that top. Goes great with the bench vise too.
Looks great
So awesome. I love having my daughter in the shop with me. Great job on the bench. She’s going to love it.
Also, I used danish oil on my roubo workbench and it holding up great!!!
Any chance the backing pad is worn on the rotex?
I don't think so. Consistent all the way around.
I really love watching your projects for your daughter
Always a great job Jay. Thanks for posting.
Nice! I'm glad she's joining you in the woodworking endeavor! Great job on the table ... and glad it isn't pink !
Great video, hits me in the feels as a father of two daughters who are much too old for shop time w dad.
Needs anew pad.
Гарна робота .Я теж люблю працювати з деревом
Wauw, what a awesome bench. Are you going to put some leather pads on the inside of the vise?
If she starts using it, yes. My thinking is while she gets used to the concept of a vise she would likely rip off the pad material until she realizes how far to open the vise. So I will add some cork rubber down the road.
Removable storage down-low for crayons, markers, etc???
I want to build a cabinet of some kind. Haven't settled on how big or what features. Thoughts?
@@JayBates I was thinking just some removable trays that nestled between the supports so you could take out what you need, use it, put it back. If others have other ideas lets hear em!
Sell the Rotex. Festool has great resale value. I have the Bosch version (1250DEVS), and in random orbit mode the rotation is too aggressive for fine finishing, closer to rotary mode than a regular random orbital sander. And rotary mode it's like a belt sander but harder to control. The best use I've found for it is as a tool of destruction. For example I've for things like flattening a subfloor, or sanding porcelain tile to rough it up before painting it. Get one of the 5mm stroke brushless sanders instead (from Festool, 3M, Mirka, or a knockoff). They are a joy to use.
Great looking bench Jay ! I'm sure she will cherish this for years to come.
I REALLY, REALLY like to idea of having the offset wooden jaw and lining it up to the leg. I will definitely be incorporating it in the design of my work bench.
Looks great. Good job daddy. The blue makes it look like squid games. Aka. Kids games. Perfect for her
It's perfect Jay! I might take some inspiration and match her style. I think my workbench is gonna be turning blue! The quote on the little plaque is awesome. What a lucky kid to have a dad like you.
You ought to ask your buddy Matt Cremona about the sander cause it looks like he has the same one.
On your sander: read about the sunk cost fallacy.
You have blue tools also.
nice
Hallo Jay, die Werkbank ist wirklich schön geworden! Da wird sich eure kleine Maus freuen!✌
I am curious if you have done any carving or chamfers/ slopes longer than what a chamfer could produce, like a spice rack in a drawer type of thing? I am extremely new the the CNC world so forgive my if the question doesn't make sense. Maybe that is a feature of the software to create a gradient... I just see most people doing what I would consider to be 2D carves rather than 3D incorporating a z-axis travel along with the others
You can do that but it would be much easier to bevel the bottom edge at the table saw.
Lovely workbench for your daughter but I would have added some dog holes in the top and down the right land leg in line with the vice.
Those can always be added later. Figured they would get in the way if she uses it for pencil and paper drawing, which she does a lot.
Turned out great, Jay! I am sure your daughter will love it. The "secret" message was an awesome touch and spot on.
Love this build and I'm sure your daughter will love the bench. The note made me tear up a bit. Great dad
The Rotex isn't a finish sander, it's meant for material removal. You should pick up an ETS 150/5, it's amazing. My buddy had the Rotex and holy crap that thing was super aggressive. Again it's NOT a finish sander! And yes this completely contradicts what Festool says, which is hilariously ironic. They list the Rotex as a finish sander and the ETS 150 as coarse/intermediate.
So a 150mm sander with a 5mm stroke (RO150) isnt a finish sander but an "ETS 150/5", with a 150mm pad and a 5mm stroke is? Its all about technique and preperation.
