As part of 'The View From Here,' the renowned Perth artist unpacks what makes the news via two large-scale paintings that reference suburban Perth fires of recent years.
When the Bunnings Inglewood store was engulfed in flames in 2018, it became a major local news event. This thoroughly Australian cultural touchpoint, it seems, was a beloved icon for the community.
“[We have] this almost humorous and bizarre allegiance to these places,” he says.
Using expressive painting techniques and vivid imagery, Taylor fuses dramatic scenes of emergency with motifs of ‘everyday’ Australian life. His work maps out our attachment to places alongside the disintegration of our social fabric.
