this song was written and produced by kenzie! key didn't actually choose it out of already available songs, but went to kenzie and asked for her to write it for him from scratch. SM originally wanted a b-side (yellow tape) to be the title, and I believe key also had to fight with SM on the music video concept. he had a big hand in making all the b-sides the way he wanted them to sound, communicating with the writers and producers a lot! he's also mentioned that he's wanted to do this sci-fi retro futurism concept for about 14 years and had to hold himself back from pitching it at meetings for SHINee :]
I think Key absolutely killed it with this comeback, not just with this title track, but with the entire album. I love how everything just screams Key, like puzzle pieces showing us exactly who he is. And yeah, we need artists like him, who have the talent, the drive and the means to push the envelope. Key in particular, I just think he's a really special one, for way too many reasons to casually mention here. Hope you're right, hope we get another comeback soon.
I also highly recommend his live stages for this comeback. bad love choreo is amazing! but he also promoted yellow tape, helium and saturday night and i adored these stages as well. Also I agree, he's so glamorous, i love it. the comeback teasers and concept pics were great too. Really everything around bad love was a 10/10 for me
This song literally had me levitating in several different dimensions!! I am so proud of Kibum for coming out with this masterpiece despite having different opinions with SM. He established his artistry with this one, from the vocals, lyrics, music video and choreography. Love, loved it ❤
To resume, Bad Love (song, album, concept) was all Key's idea. This comeback screams KEY. Loud, glamorous, dramatic, this is how Kibum is and that's why I love it and at the same time why so many people love it too! Key had to fight with sm to get the creative control (just like Taemin did for Never Gonna Dance Again). He had a really hard time preparing everything, being stressed and don't resting properly. He even said he cried when they finally ended filming the mv. This comeback is really so personal, Kibum put his heart on it. I'm really happy you enjoyed it, Pd! I hope you get to enjoy the mini album too, just let you know that the bside "Eighteen" was wrote by Key himself and it's inspired by his memories when he was eighteen! Great video as always! See you in the listening party! ^^
Heres the thing. There's this kind of trend in kpop in general where the song ends in pretty much in a cliffhanger note, which I get why they do that it increases the replay value of the songs. But bad love nailed the ending..the outro is so so good that it makes you listen over and over and over again. So kudos to you key
@@luvneojen there's an art on how to abruptly end songs that very very few of these kpop songs get right so yeah I agree about your dislike of them and yes to this song's gorgeous ending. It's haunting and really fits with Key's voice and how he was able to convey that speaks to his vocal talent.
YES i’m so glad you also noticed that Bad Love isn’t just a 80s inspired comeback, but a song that could’ve literally been released at that time Key ate this concept, i’m glad SM finally gave him the freedom he needed on his music
The fact that he conceptualized this 13 years ago and now he is able to bring it to life. Key is really a creative genius (all SHINee members are imho). He didn't hold back in this comeback and fought for this concept. THIS WHOLE ALBUM IS SOOOOO GOOD (songs, production, choreo, MV and the physical album 💯)
Key mentioned somewhere that the opening scene and the last scene is the clue as to what the story is about. The MV begins with Key looking at the TV and then all of the scenes from then on seem like stuff you would see on TV while flicking through channels and then the last scene it's Key in front of the TV again. I just interpreted it as someone who's going through a breakup sitting at home and watching TV and expressing those emotions through the the stuff on there.
Yes, it was during a reaction video where he said, the person (himself in MV) was going crazy because of the 'Bad Love' and as they flipped through TV channels, they placed themselves into roles of the characters on the shows. But in the end, he was just sitting watching TV, it wasn't real. I love the concept, it's really great.
Key's album really brought me to an astronomical plain. The 80's vibes, the Lost in Space/Star Trek vibes, that RED outfit that gives me MJ's Thriller. It hit Every single thing I needed from a musician in a hot while, scratched an itch that's been in me for a few years. This album has been on a constant repeat since it came out and I havent been happier.
5:11 This part is one of the main reasons why I keep playing this song over and over again. I teared up the first time I heard it. That melody is so hauntingly beautiful.
I agree with you 100%. Key was very involved in the whole production of this mini album and it shows, it has so much of his personality and his own colour. I feel like it is his strongest release yet, and I love it. All the b-sides are great. SM was giving him trouble over budget, and the production team was pushing for Yellow Tape as a title track, he was also pressed for time apparently.
Finally! I was waiting for this reaction! 🙌🏻 Actually, SM wanted "Yellow Tape" to be the title track but Key said he couldn't see a real concept for that song instead of "Bad Love". He thought of this "retro fruturistic" concept 14 years ago but he waited patiently for this type music to be back on track and he fought with SM for his vision and the artistry he always wanted to do. It is not a coincidence that he was also in space on "Hate That" because this whole comeback (album, concept, music, MV, fashion) is inspired by retro sci-fi movies like Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" and, of course, David Bowie's "Space Oddity". I'm glad you loved this because is amazing! You should check out the mini album too, all the songs are terrific! 🔥 Love from Mexico. ❤️🇲🇽
This song is just on another level. So far it's SOTY for me. It's perfect, not only the song but the styling, the mv, Key's charisma and his amazing vocals. An unbelievable song.
Imagine if Key performs this in the US. This would literally blow up. I am more than happy to see him get all the praises and appreciation he solely deserves as an artist. He’s truly an art.
He calls this concept Retro Futurism, which I think is the best way to describe this comeback. It’s also a hodgepodge of all the things that inspire him, from the retro concept, to all the nudges to the sci-fi genre. You’ll also notice that most of the scenes are a nod to different films - like the mirror scene was very reminiscent of Black Swan and the variety scene looks inspired by Joker or the iconic Sex Pistols interview. Personally I think this MV was his proving to his critics that he’s more than just a variety king but an actual legitimate artist and he did a damn good job. As a long time Shawol, I’m so proud of him!
This song is so GOOD!!! I am addicted! His voice at the end is my favorite too! In terms of the music video, Key has said that the concept is essentially that the only thing that's real is him at the very beginning and end of the video when he's looking at the TV. He is comparing the different sides of his personality and his different emotions to flipping through the channels on the TV. Hence each set is a different emotion/side of his personality.
4:42 and 5:10 give me goosebumps every time: the camerawork, the lighting, the haunting vocals, the choreo, the footwork! I can not express enough how much I love this comeback!!!
Nah cuz Bad love never fails to give me goosebumps. I honestly really didn't think Taemin would ever get topped as my Shinee bias but Key is out here claiming his place at the top!
I’m so happy you finally reviewed BADLOVE. I knew you would appreciate it. I’m glad you pointed out Keys status in the industry. He is a 2nd gen ICON. He already shaped Kpop and with Shinee helped promote Kpop in western markets. Key is FILTHY RICH (have you seen his house!) not to mention how much money he makes on all his TV shows. He can make whatever kind of music he wants, and doesn’t need to worry about music show wins or chart positions. He is one of the TOP EARNERS for SM entertainment. I’m so proud of him for making this album, and following his heart. He’s an incredible talent and deserves every single bit of his massive success
This song is one of the few that literally ascends me to infinity and beyond istg i feel i'm flying hearing this. So deserved that he won his 1st ever solo win
Key got his first win with this song and it’s so so deserved! Key called the concept for this album retro-future. Key also said that this is a concept he’s wanted to do for 14 years so this comeback is very special to him which makes his win all the sweeter.
I really hope you liked this. I've always casually listened to Key over the years, but this comeback made me start to go back and listen to all his solo music. Plus he got his first win. He was so surprised and the live he did afterwards was so sweet. Very proud of him. The song itself was magic, the Joker vibes, space, actor etc etc throughout the video. The rest of the album was good especially Helium. Can't wait to see what he does next.
Key's Face album was one of the first I bought ever, this Bad Love album is iconic. I loved it, esp the packaging of it. Key is genius, nothing less expected! I do wish there were more monsters in the mv like the physical album.
This is seriously the best K-pop comeback of the year. It's a masterpiece. The music, the lyrics, the vibes, the choreo, the production, the storyline, the fashion - everything is so on point, so artistic. Truly magnificent.
I love this song so much! It feels like something I would have heard on the radio as a kid, but still fresh. Maybe it's because it's been so long but I don't remember any of the synth based groups I listened to have a vocalist quite like Key. I've definitely become a fan with this comeback, bit late but better late than never :)
Key's vocals and stage presence is so good~ I feel like his vocals are underappreciated, but this proves ust how hard he works, and he could be a main vocalist 100%
The bg vocal adlibs/samples make me think David Lee Roth or Ozzy in Crazy Train, the synth sound is beautiful, and the whole 50's/60's Sci-Fi B-Movie/Star Trek concept is exactly up my alley! Key knocked it out of the park with this comeback, I haven't stopped listening to the mini since it came out.
i love A LOT of kpop songs, but there are a few that just make me really FEEL something, something i can't name, and Bad Love is one. his voice during the chorus and the at the end just hit me somewhere i can't quite place and it's feels so special. this is a song that's going to always be so important to me
Key said the whole concept is how the "people in the past saw/imagined the future " - that's why to represent the past talk shows, disco balls, stage play etc are used and to represent what past people thought about future they used space, aliens etc
Bad Love is definitely my favorite Key album. His vocals and 80’s sound just did it for me. I agree the song sounds like it came straight out from the 8O’s. My fave part is also the pre-chorus and the powerful outro.
my favourite part is the bridge with the echo 'i'm not even thinking of you' and then 'that's what i want to say to you', idk what it is but it just tugs at your heartstrings
I remember you gave the same comment about a song feeling like straight out of the 80s rather than being just inspired by the sound when you did a listening party for Brave Girls 'Summer Queen', it was during their song 'Fever'
Vocalist, rapper, dancer, diva fashionista and actor ... Our almighty key Our shinning #shinee are very talented... Both as a group and as soloists, their discography is very varied and of quality
Sm usually has a voting process for their title tracks and majority of the votes went to yellow tape which is nw a bside on the album. Key said he could not visualize what he wants to do with yellow tape but with bad love, everything was crystal clear to him. He could 'see' the concept, fashion, choreo etc. Hence, he chose Bad Love instead. Also, he said on cultwo show that BoA agreed with his choice.
Very good reaction !! Just to add that we already know one of the songs from his next comeback, it's called Another Life and he presented it in his virtual concert on a VCR and it's incredible I loved it !! On the other hand, of all the groups or soloists there are always songs that I don't like, but that's not the same with Key I love all his work, all his Korean and Japanese songs are on my playlist, even the covers he does are very good , like his recent cover of "Juice", which I also recommend watching or reacting to him, as well as his performances of Bad love, Helium, Saturday Night and Yellow Tape.
I was so looking forward to your reaction. My favorite part it's also the ending. His vocals, the sounds and his dancing is top notch. Key said he had discussions with the staff, they all wanted Yellow Tape to be the title track but he got to do what he wanted at the end. I recommend you to watch the mood sampler and concept photos, that's where the monster in their icon is from. Key said he had been thinking of doing this concept for 14 years! The albums desings are really well done too and it all ties together. Key wanted retro-futurism and he nailed it. As for the MV, from what he has said, I gather he wanted to put in it stuff that were relevant to the 80s/90s? Like talk shows and scifi films. Are you doing a listening party of the b-sides? I would love to know what you think of them. All the songs are so good, especially Helium and Saturday Night.
This whole album was such a breath of fresh air in the industry! It has this whole thread throughout of the connection between space and the isolated feeling of drowning in a bad love. The metaphor is subtly there in each song. Alienation. Alien planet. It’s a whole story. He meets her. He drowns in he. He thinks it’s fun. But realize it’s bad. He slowly heals and wants to get over her. It’s such a good concept album. When Kibum was allowed more control than usual, he shined like never before. I am such a proud Shawol. I am so happy for him and his win👏🏼 Gosh we love him so much.
OMGOMGOMGOMG THANK YOU PD!!! I knew that you were gonna love it the moment I heard it and I'm so glad that you were able to check it out! I also really hope that you're feeling better and stay healthy!
I must say I first watched a clip of Nozes fancam, capturing esp the seconds from 2:51-2:58 I got so smitten with this part, the build up, already from "Grown bad monster" was so incredibly perfect leading to this sharp melody of "Joy and Despair are mine" It's really stuck in my head ever since and constantly on loop
Super appreciate the bit where you said artists like Key do not need to settle for mainstream hooks anymore because what they do ripples to the kpop scene. I couldn't agree more! I'm really glad he pushed BAD LOVE as the title track --- all the songs in the album are major bops, but this one really hits differently. There's just so much passion put into this song
I'm so happy with the success of Key's comeback with Bad Love. He did put a lot of effort on it, and it shows on the entire concept, and the quality. I really love it!! I'm sure you'll enjoy the rest of the songs as well, since he's expressing himself on them. Thank you as always for your reaction!!!
Thank you for heeding our request to react to bad love. I personally love key. This mini album is sensational. Their high notes are so melodic and as you mentioned they make you travel.
Thank you for your reaction, have been really looking forward to it and can’t wait for your album reaction- it’s so good. You should also check out his theme trailer which is all 50s sci-fi and where the monster you mentioned features. The thought Key put into the concept and the album covers is amazing- check them out if you haven’t seen them. Also as others have said he performed a lot of the b-sides on music shows so you might want to check them out too for the choreo after you have listened to the album as you only have 4 songs on there you haven’t listened to yet
Finally been waiting for this. I know you will love this and you get what Key is going for, so thank you for your endless praises for Key my ultimate bias!
My first reaction was same, straight out of the 80's which is my era as a teen so I LOVE THIS!!!! This is my fav along with Helium off his mini album. This American girl loves K POP
Finally omg I’ve been waiting! Please do an album reaction please please please. I enjoyed your Key’s previous album reaction video. For the full choreo I recommend watch his 1 the K. Also the comeback stages are awesome to watch. So glad you like his work.
Finally I like a Key's solo song! I felt the ... I mean, how can I say? the queer fashion vibe that I always love in key on SHINee's mvs I found in bad love. In his pasts debuts, he seens so straight to me... but now he's Key that I know. no gender. So much better. I don't know if he's straight or LGBTQIAP+... I only speaks about his persona, his vibe, what he makes me feel... and this time, I loved.
I'm so happy that Kibum got to participate in preparing for his album. This album really represents him as a solo artist, and I think that he genuinely pulled off the 80's concept so well! So proud of him!
Key, the member of SHINee who once declared that he had come to terms with being seen as “a duck” among swans and peacocks, has finally come into his own. When I heard him say that, I wanted to yell at the screen, “No, Kibum!. You are not a duck. No way! You’re a magnificent tropical bird, a Quetzal, with brightly colored feathers and a tail that trails extravagantly in flight.” I’m so proud of him. He suffered in the background while the other members got all the accolades. Maybe now people are finally seeing him for the amazing talent he is. I’m also proud of the way he is helping keeping SHINee relevant while Taemin is in the military, in the same way Taemin did while his hyungs were in the Army/Marine Corp. after all this group has been through in the aftermath of incredible tragedy, I’m so gratified to them continuing to prove themselves to be the “Princes of K-pop.”
The fact that u mentioned the key's world in the end,. Actually its Keyland, Key's universe. Even his recent concert (online) was also held in keyland. Thank you for reacting to bad love.
I was waiting for this, having a feeling you would love it. The mv is so good, and Key knocked me out with the vocals. That 'ah oh no' in the outro is magnificent.
Also as for the connecting point it is basically "retro space", so how people perceived the future would look like in the 60s, 70s, 80s and even 90s. Sorry that I am writing two comments but I genuinely sincerely veeeeery ardently recommend you to listen to the full mini album and check the album concept and visual samplers too because it is truly a work of art and a testament to his brilliant mind.

EVERYTHING YOU WANT IN A KEY SONG YES
i guess bad love is my favorite song of this year i've been listening to it non-stop since the song was released
Vocalist, rapper, dancer, diva fashionista and actor ... Our almighty key
Our shinning #shinee are very talented...
Also, he said on cultwo show that BoA agreed with his choice.
bad love will be definitely in one of my 2021 favorite kpop songs
The expression of satisfaction as Key hits all the right spots is exactly how i felt listening and watching!!! ICONIC
When the song first released, I couldn’t get over it. I just played it non stop
I really really really hope Key watches your reaction ❤️
Love the review! Key is my new favorite artists. The entire album is great and I’ve discovered all of his solo work. He’s amazing!
I am so happy for him and his win👏🏼
Gosh we love him so much.
Looking forward for your whole album review
OMGOMGOMGOMG THANK YOU PD!!! I knew that you were gonna love it the moment I heard it and I'm so glad that you were able to check it out! I also really hope that you're feeling better and stay healthy!
Glad you're feeling better PD! Thanks for your reaction.
I must say I first watched a clip of Nozes fancam, capturing esp the seconds from 2:51-2:58
I got so smitten with this part, the build up, already from "Grown bad monster" was so incredibly perfect leading to this sharp melody of "Joy and Despair are mine"
It's really stuck in my head ever since and constantly on loop
Shinee and 80's has Always been a love strory
Super appreciate the bit where you said artists like Key do not need to settle for mainstream hooks anymore because what they do ripples to the kpop scene. I couldn't agree more! I'm really glad he pushed BAD LOVE as the title track --- all the songs in the album are major bops, but this one really hits differently. There's just so much passion put into this song
The scene with the host reminded me of the movie "Joker" and the vibes felt that way too!
AND LET ME SAY! THIS ALBUM! IS FANTASTIC! NO SKIPS!
istg this song makes me so damn emotional
Song of the year
your comment on this being Synthwave rings true for me as well, and one of the reasons I love it so much!
It's been stuck in my head for a while
Thank you for heeding our request to react to bad love.
Always with great comments and respectful to our SHINee. Check Bad Love Dance version for the choreography and the whole mini album.
i love the bowie influence!! 😭 it’s so beautiful to see key’s take on retro futurism. he really poured his heart and soul into this song
This is my favourite song of the year. And the end vocal is also my favourite part
Bad Love is absolutely incredible; i’m so glad you liked it!! i hope you get to listen to the mini album, ever song is stellar. no skips !!!
I always love Key album. It makes me alive.
Was looking forward to your reaction!!! 😍😍😍 Thank you!
Oh my gahd i wasn't expecting a reaction to bad love because its been a while-- thank u pd--- also get well soon!
Thanks for your reaction 😊
Hope you are feeling better
LOOOOOOOOVE KEY ❤️❤️❤️
the first time i heard this song i instantly knew you would like this!!
Key is amazing, love his music.
Ok i'll admit im obsessed with this song its very 80s and i love it
There is a performance video of Bad Love!
I only speaks about his persona, his vibe, what he makes me feel... and this time, I loved.
this song is EASILY soty. just everything about it is extremely high quality and original, its literally insane
this song, this man and this album. PERFECTION.
THANK YOU FOR DELIVERING PD!
I checked your channel daily waiting for this reaction!
I'm so happy that Kibum got to participate in preparing for his album. This album really represents him as a solo artist, and I think that he genuinely pulled off the 80's concept so well! So proud of him!
oh gosh like I have been waiting for this like weeks! thank u so much 🙇♀️🙇♀️🙇♀️ enjoyed it a lot ♥️
Omayygodd i hope you feel better also 💓 and we are rooting for mini album listening party like what you did before !
Key is just amazing man
Key, the member of SHINee who once declared that he had come to terms with being seen as “a duck” among swans and peacocks, has finally come into his own.
Hi, I am still here waiting for your reaction to Bad Love album^^
Also as for the connecting point it is basically "retro space", so how people perceived the future would look like in the 60s, 70s, 80s and even 90s. Sorry that I am writing two comments but I genuinely sincerely veeeeery ardently recommend you to listen to the full mini album and check the album concept and visual samplers too because it is truly a work of art and a testament to his brilliant mind.
