- Ridiculously, an astounding 10 of Peter Capaldi's 40 episodes have title sequences where the music is out of sync with the visuals. Seriously! Here is a comparison between the titles in sync vs all the episodes title sequences that are OUT of sync (up to the videos upload date at the end of 2015). It doesn't bother the casual viewer, but to those who know what sounds go with which visual cues, it's quite irritating.
Unfortunately, it appears this trend continued in Series 10. "The Pilot", "Smile", and "The Eaters of Light" also have out of sync titles.

OH MY GOD This drove me ABSOLUTELY insane, and I'm glad to finally see someone talking about it.
Yeah, I've seen plenty of comments about it on Doctor Who sites and stuff, but not much elsewhere...and I thought a video comparison would be the best way to share thoughts and to see just how bad it really got by Face the Raven.

The problem here is the opening sting. If you watch the synced version, the sequence begins as soon as the sting plays. The problem with this is that the sting is used at the end of cold opens, and that clearly wasn't taken into consideration by the animators.
I have a feeling that the reason this rarely happened before these titles debuted was because editors were given access to an abridged version of the titles, for example David Tennant's titles started at that set point and the version with the extended vortex at the beginning was a completely separate file only accessed if the producers asked them to use it i.e. for the first episode of the series (without a cold open) so there was very little chance of the titles ever being out of sync when the sting was lined up with the cliffhanger of the cold open. Capaldi's titles, on the other hand, I think producers were provided with the full titles, including the extended part before the theme kicks in and most editors, who weren't aware of the enforced precedent, just slapped the titles on and modified them quickly, as the graphics obviously would be the last thing to add in post. Hence why we got so many out of sync variations. Just a thought 🤔
i was always the one to notice when the titles were out of sync. The others don't bother me too much...but series 9 Ep 10....Cmon that's not even close!!!!!! ahaha

What’s funny is that the editor of Face the Raven has some very impressive credits as a Doctor Who editor (Rose, The Impossible Planet, Voyage of the Damned, etc.), but the only other 12th Doctor story he edited was the previous episode, Sleep No More (the only one with NO opening titles).

The creators wouldn't let go of the titles. Which is why in series 9 the opening shot had a colour change. Like the series 7 part 1 titles
Not only did I find that lazy, I also thought the way the editors just slapped on the 2008 sting on the front of the title sequence them just not trying either without even trying to sync it to the theme.

Here's how it works - you have the music as a sound file and the titles as a video file. During editing when it's time for the titles to begin you add them to the time line then add your music underneath. The problem arises when editors don't realise where the music is supposed to begin. Thanks to that "DREWWRRRRR" at the start of the music some get confused and que the music to begin at the same time as the titles, not a few seconds before. This wouldn't be noticeable save for the musical ques and sound effects which are supposed to match up with the visual content of the titles. (Eg that spiraling clock has a sound effect, the Tardis disappearing into the time vortex and when the Doctor Who logo hits the screen). It's a nitpick but from a professional editing standpoint it's inexcusable once, not multiple times. I wouldn't even do that in one of my videos (which work the same way - titles and music are seperate) and if I did I'd catch it.

@@palblue for the “DREWWRRRRR” to happen before the start of the intro, the audio has to be separated so it can be placed underneath the ending of the previous scene.
It’s surprising how BBC can make such a mistake. Hell, the fact they probably have a team of editors and either 1- they didn’t notice 2- they didn’t care. But hopefully in the future it’s fixed. Also. Seeing your comment is a surprise. And a welcome one too
This did also happen in the 10th doctor's run once or twice. I don't think that this is due to a lack of caring but a compromise between the visuals and ever changing credit length. it looks like the visuals were made to match the original credits. I'm pretty sure that the editors and artist a More than aware that these episode intros don't match up and it could be just as as annoying to them as it is for you all.

The added benefit with the 10th Doctor's out of sync titles is that the graphics could be extended to compensate. For the successive titles, this isn't the case, they would have to be looped to compensate for this inconsistency. So, in Tennant's case, if the titles ran ahead of the music, the full graphics could be played to circumvent one outplaying the other. This happened in Last of the Time Lords for example, but most of the time the titles were never played out to their full length - often there was 2-4 seconds of footage remaining thereafter.

The titles for the 9th/10th Doctor's era were always out of sync, except in Rose, I believe. There's a "vworp" sound effect that plays as the light on top of the TARDIS flashes (during the sequence where the TARDIS rotates and flies down a different tunnel) in Rose, but in every episode afterwards, it's out of sync.

It's because Rose doesn't have a cold-open, and so the music doesn't play over anything except the sequence itself. The only other episode that doesn't have a cold open is Partners in Crime, but they changed the theme tune from Voyage of the Damned onwards, and the "vworp" effect is gone.
@@LiveHedgehog I think you're wrong, you can see at 3 seconds in, there's a feathered iris transition to the actual opening of every episode after. Rose just has 3 seconds of random vortex for the reason you said.
Can we also acknowledge the error with the white glow that expands from the tardis as the camera rotates around it in the clock face; it’s vanishes a few frames too early!
That really bugs me
I have noticed that Face The Raven seems to start a 1/3 into the opening of the clockwatches, i.e. they seem to have clipped the first 2 or three seconds of the visuals?
If you notice at 0:05, most of the visuals have a giant ring in them. This seems to be present in all clips EXCEPT Face the Raven. If you look at the 'In Synch' vid, after the 'ring' dissipates it takes from 0:04 - 0:09 (5 seconds) until the swirl occurs. But in Face The Raven it takes from 0:02 - 0:05 for the swirl to occur = 3 SECONDS!! Ergo they start the visuals about two seconds AFTER the 'ring' part and thus clearly they have for some reason clipped half of the first part of the visual intro out and that's why this is happening.
For Last Christmas, I can understand the sync issues, for the addition of Nick Frost in the titles (fair and just reason really), but Face the Raven... dear oh dear...
Even for Last Christmas, though, it didn't change the actual length of the titles so it really shouldn't have been an issue. I don't have any idea what happened with Face the Raven, the other ones were bad but still slightly bearable, but that...horrendous
It's actually not the biggest thing to go wrong. In fact, title sequences have gone out of sync before. Jon Pertwee's title sequence has been altered aurally, after the melodic sting at the very beginning was removed from the music, but there were two points that the sound effects and the titles matched together.
As someone who has watched every episode of the show numerous times over, the 12th Doctor titles are the only ones I've found to be obviously and bothersomely out of sync. The music and the visuals is one thing, but when you have the sound effects its another. I don't recall any specific sound effects attached to visuals in the 3rd Doctor's title sequence. And in any case, this title sequence has numerous points where the audio matches the visuals, whereas all the other title sequences only have one, maybe two.
The worst part about this is the fact that it wouldn't be hard to sync it at all. Take the sound effect for when the clock is revealed for example. Yet still, they always fuck that up.

Did you guys know it was kind of the same with Tennants title sequences in Series 4? A few were for some reason slower than the original causing it to look odd.
I seriously don't know how this managed to slip past, there are so many audio cues that link up with the visuals. The spiraling clock, The tardis disappearing into the time vortex, the names, which have always appeared in new who at the same time as the "OOOWEEEWOOOO" sound, the "BUM BUM BUM" as the tardis does it's spin off screen, it just confuses me.

Out of sync titles really annoy me for some unknown reason
The fact that it's become such a common oversight bothers me. So much work is put into the sets, the filming, the costumes, the effects and keeping the show afloat for so many years, but not one person is looking at the titles during post-production and thinking "yeah, maybe someone should fix that shit".
Honestly don't know whether this was an editing error they kept making and never bothered correcting or if it was intentional.
The other episodes were like: yeah whatever it happens
but Jesus Christ what was going on with S9 E10

Not really sure how they could mess that up so easily, but who really cares that much or pays attention to it being synced properly, why, you shouldn't be able to notice, there's a perception filter placed on the title sequence so you think it's like any other Doctor Who title sequence, obviously some people are smart enough to bypass that filter.

I'm sure it must be a lot more than 7. Seems they only kept it in sync for the first half of Series 8, then messed it for all the other episodes, then fixed it for the first half of Series 9, and messed it up again for the rest. Still, great video showing what the problem is, as bizarrely enough, a good number of viewers don't notice anything is wrong. Glad somebody finally pointed it out.
Yeah, it's strange how some people don't notice. While it's true that there are more episodes that aren't 100% in sync, I have checked it out, and with the exception of these ones no other one is more than a few frames off, so there isn't a significant difference :)

The part when the theme sounds like it’s saying “Doctor Who” should sync up with the title “Doctor Who” when it pops up. That’s how you know it’s not in sync also the tardis sounds and the ending also can show if it’s out of sync.

This REALLY bugged me near the end of series 8, but I thought they'd fixed it in series 9. I guess I just didn't notice it with these episodes.
I think it may have been less noticeable because they were scattered throughout the season, rather than one big chunk at the end like Series 8
The worse titles ever......Sleep No More! They didn't have any. They could have just put them at the start like they did with Rose, Smith and Jones and Partners In Crime! Gatiss' stupid reason for not having them was the found footage crew could not invent their own CGI opening titles. If that were true, how could they invent their own closing sequence with actors and the production crew's names?

They didn't have a title sequence for narrative reasons, it wouldn't have worked with the vibe they were going for to have titles.

The woman who lived was also slightly out of sync aswell, I noticed that the sound effects were playing about a second before they should but it's a very small margin though probably less than a second tbh.
I just double checked and it seems fine to me. If it's there, definitely less then a second, a few frames at most. For reference S8 E12 (top right corner) is a second out of sync.
it just seems like too big of a mistake for them to make i mean, theres nothing in the editing process that would acually unsync the audio, all they are doing is going into a little window at the end of the intro and changing the name and the writer, it could be that when the software renders the sequence something happens to it but again, the people who made the title sequence watch episode before it is aired and they are they kind of picky people who would notice this if it was a mistake. im not saing it wasnt a mistake it looks off with that audio but its the sort of thing i'd do if i was in charge... "hey, steve, come 'ere, if i de-sync the audio, do ya tink any of the planks who watch the show will notice, hehe".

Even if you ignore the fact that the titles are out of sync, Nick Frost's name appearing after the title in that Christmas Special was just stupid. Honestly thought they had messed up and got the titles the wrong way round or something, what on Earth were they thinking...
I don't have so much of a problem with the synchronicity (although the perfectionist in me wonders how all these changes ever managed to get through without being noticed!). What bothers me is the ridiculously short amount of time that the episode title and writer credits sometimes have on screen. Sometimes you can't even read to the end of the episode title, let alone the writer's credit before it disappears. It was better in series 9, but most of the series 8 captions were ridiculously brief.
Honestly never really noticed that before, although maybe that's because I already know the title & writer beforehand...it seems they've had quite a bit of trouble with this sequence that will hopefully finally be fixed in Series 10!
Merganman4 Oh, I knew beforehand too. I just have a knack of noticing little things like that but missing the obvious things that everyone else notices like the out of sync music you've highlighted here. Funnily enough small errors make me much more annoyed than the massive obvious ones!
We've got over a year to wait until series 10, so yes hopefully they'll have had enough time to fix it by then.
+DarthJedi2005remixes It's hardly something that needs to be fixed! The opening has the clearest possible marker for syncing possible, the beat starts when the lights go and it all starts spinning. It's so bizarre that the mistake was even made once, let alone let through 7 times...

A way of fixing this would be: instead of trying to figure out where the audio goes, just clip it to the end of the title sequence so that the music and video end properly, and there you go
Series 9 ep 10 was the worst intro ever the music was way out of sync and they must have cut the clockworks too early for the TARDIS to come up and flow down the time vortex
When I first watched that episode, I thought they only put it out of sync to include that other guy's name but nope just messed it all up.

Maybe it's because in that episode, Clara wants to be like the doctor, and goes too fast, that's why she died btw, but that can explain why the visuals come faster than the music...

David Tennant's & Christopher Eccleston's were the fastest Titles and they managed to get that right but this, this is just embarrassing.

So... Which sounds go with which visual cues? Because I have no idea how is the audio supposed to match the video...
It's a bit difficult to describe sounds and music with words, so bear with me! You can watch the "In Sync" sequence after reading each one to better understand what I'm talking about.
1. The first beat of the theme (after the opening sting) should match up with the first cog lighting up
2. As the third bar of the theme begins (the 9th set of "dun dun dun's") the clock vortex bit should appear
3. There's a small sound after the first doo-wee-ooh that matches with the flash as the TARDIS dissapears
4. Also after both doo-wee-ooh's there's a duun-duun (first time, the second "duun" is a lower pitch than the first; second time, the second "duun" is higher than the first). When each of these starts, "Peter Capaldi" and "Jenna Coleman" appear.
5. As soon as the dun-dun-dun (each note lower than the last; after the doo-wee-ooh's) happens, Capaldi's face appears
6. On the third note after the dun-dun-dun, "Doctor Who" stops moving towards the camera and flashes brightly

They need to hire NeonVisual to do their intro sequences, their intros have higher quality graphics than the show somehow and the visual cues are so spot on with the music. Even the pictures of the doctor are higher quality when they feature the doctor's face in the sequence.
So...basically, the errors are at the starts and ends of seasons, is what I'm seeing. All of those episodes being ones in which the story of the episode itself depends on some kind of cognitive dissonance or strange event (in other words, the entire episode depends on the viewer being on edge).
- In the Forest of the Night: The plants actually protect humanity, and Clara tells the Doctor to run like he always does, further increasing the rift of trust between the two of them.
- Dark Water: Clara threatens the Doctor with throwing away the TARDIS keys; we find out that Heaven is more than what it seems.
- Death in Heaven: Clara is the Doctor, Danny and the Brigadier are Cybermen, and multiple beloved characters die (or seem to).
- Last Christmas: Everything's a dream . . . or is it? Is the tangerine at the end Clara's version of the final spinning top camera shot at the end of _Inception_?
- Magician's Apprentice: Did . . . did they just DIE? Did the TARDIS just get disintegrated? Did the Doctor actually abandon Davros?
- Under the Lake: Okay that's SUPER creepy . . . ghosts shouldn't be able to pick up weapons, and why can't the TARDIS read those symbols?
- Face the Raven: Clara oversteps the line between her and the Doctor and cannot be saved . . . or so we think.
Now, I'm not making a stand on this hypothesis, but the fact that those episodes are all major turning points for the Doctor and his companion seems a bit too important for me to completely ignore. Yes, it's probably just moronic gaffes on the production team's part, but I can't help wondering if they were deliberate, given that there have been 11 failures in 3 years . . .
Nice theory, but I think it's just wishful thinking. If your theory is in fact true, why would they not be out of sync for Hell Bent, a MASSIVE turning point in the Doctor and Clara's relationship? Also, in Series 10, The Pilot and Smile have been out of sync...I can see how The Pilot would fit into your theory, but what about Smile?
That's why I was saying I wouldn't make a stand on that hypothesis. I also haven't been able to watch the new season yet so I can't comment on the S10 starting. My real point was just that while a lot of people assume it's just a series of repeated mistakes, I can't help wondering if they had a reasoning for it.
I've just realized that if you look at the "in sync" version, the flashing of the clocks is actually timed to the bass line.
Also...why is the coloring so bloody different for each one?! Some are cyan, some are brownish....

The brown ones are from 2014, the cyan ones 2015 - so at least it wasn't switching back & forth. However, I do wish it had simply remained unchanged (either cyan from the beginning, or they remained brown in 2015).

As much as I admire the uniqueness of this title sequence, I am getting a bit bored with the CG sequences.
I mean, during the original run, you were left asking, "How'd they do that?"
These days, no matter how elaborate they make the sequence, I'm like, "Yup. All done with CG."
A little experimentation with video cameras would go a long way...but then, that's asking them to be creative, so...
Yeah, I see what you mean - although in Capaldi's era I've noticed they've tried not to use CGI for monsters as much as possible, so that's an improvement.

Face the Raven really bothered me when I first saw it a couple of years ago, I'm thinking of rewatching the entirety of Doctor Who since I stopped after a few episodes of Jodie.
I like s9 e0 intro, the winter vibes are amazing.
I'm just so relieved I'm not the only one who noticed this. I had to watch all of these on my computer so I genuinely thought my computer had an audio issue, which clearly didn't make sense because the episodes sound was synced just fine. This drove me NUTS!
I remember how much I was annoyed by the in sync version how it still just never felt right, than when they really screwed up their job in syncing it. I do like the theme, but it just doesn't fit properly in a lot of parts.
I really like the opening bars, and the middle eight (which unfortunately we don't get to hear on the show) - but the doo-wee-ooo grates on me a bit, as it's sounds pretty whiney and annoying at times, though I feel they match the visuals well (or maybe it's just because I've gotten used to it)! Which parts do you feel fit the least?
The best part of the sequence to me is the very beginning until 0:15. I would have loved the next bit but it just feels like motion is too slow and not as good as it easily could have been. Than the parts when Jenna Coleman's name comes up, and when the Doctor Who logo does, and when the TARDIS comes at the end, where the music made it sound like it should have appeared sooner. I love the theme music, but it just feels like the title sequence didn't match up to it in a few ways. A lot of NeanVisual's versions of the title sequence is how I thought they should have made the official one. One main bit is the way the music sounds, its hard to figure out exactly when the logo should pop up.
Honest to god when I see face the raven it’s like doctor who is like “here have a very out of sync intro just to start off our sadness then end it with the mother of all sadness which was killing off Clara

2 years later to seeing this video and I completely notice it now watching Capaldi's episodes! Omg, the OCD is strong with me! Wtf BBC? Why you do this? :'( By the way, I'm not sure if it's an in-joke about the intros being wrong but S9 E1 is labelled twice, the right one is S9 E3.

It's a possibility, but I wasn't planning on it since it would be essentially the same as this video, which gets the idea across quite well on its own and I have updated the description to include Series 10. If I decide to update this video, it would be after Christmas just in case Capaldi's last episode is out of sync (fingers crossed that it isn't though!)
Yep, if the last opening is out of sync, I'll eat my hat. This opening was very poor anyway. It has a lot of inconsistencies (sometimes the title of the ep is captalized, sometimes not, same with "By"), bad effects (like when the TARDIS comes in, waves appear and instead of fading away or going out of the screen, they just suddenly disappear). I hope they do a better job with the next opening.
Are the titles for Face The Raven out of sync on the S9 DVD and Blu-Ray releases as well?
I can't say about the blu-ray, and I don't know if it's differs by region, but at the very least the Region 1 DVD for series 9 IS out of sync.

Uh... I may be being stupid, but how can you tell? How do you know which one is correct and why does it matter?
There are numerous sound cues throughout that match up with visuals, i.e. the first note plays when the gears light up and there's a sound effect after the first "doo-wee-ooo" that plays with the flash of light before Peter Capaldi's name. It doesn't particularly matter overall, it's just really annoying when you are aware that it's happening and it is so inconsistent (some episodes have it 1 second out of sync, others 2 seconds, some have audio ahead of visuals, others behind).
S9 E10 was the most out of sync.
+Qweekskowped I actually heard that Face The Raven was out of sync on purpose to represent the dischord in time because of Clara's Death.
That seems like a pretty lame excuse. It's absolute bullcrap, doesn't add anything to the story, doesn't make much sense, and it's obviously not the only sequence out of sync. It's just a desperate attempt to explain it away, when there is definitely no reason for it to be out of sync.

@@Merganman4 I might have an explanation - apparently the production of this title sequence was undertaken by several different teams, one of which being the fan who originally created the concept for this title sequence, the others being separate branches of the BBC - BBC Wales, and BBC Cardiff. Due to the largely 'fan-made' aspect of this title sequence, none of the three teams wholly agreed on any aspect of the sequence, the original creator had very little input into how it was implemented, and as a result there was not a singular definitive version of the sequence in the leadup to the production of Series 8 - the original fan-made team were still working on the sequence using the Series 1 title theme, and the two branches of the BBC didn't communicate properly. As such, the title sequence was often out-of-sync and there was no-one around whose job it was to say "hey, that isn't right" so they all just went with it, even in the case of Face the Raven...
@@dalekbumps Interesting...though even with that situation, it's kind of astounding to me that no-one at a higher level either noticed or cared about how sloppy the inconsistency would come across, especially when the fix is such a simple one. Then again, we somehow find ourselves in a similar situation with the current title sequence (though admittedly not quite as bad) - I get that Doctor Who fans can be a bit obsessive over this sort of thing, but I'd expect a high attention to detail with the sequence that will be fronting every episode of the show.
Does it matter? The titles not in sync fit with the whole Doctor/Tardis relationship and with the series sometimes things dont always work out right
When dialogue is out of sync, does it matter? In the long run, no, but it's an incredible annoyance and inconvenience in the moment - sure, this is a shorter time frame, but it's still bothersome. And on a show with such unique and awesome title sequences as Doctor Who, people expect it to be done professionally - which means that the titles are in sync every time. Simple as that.
+Merganman4 annoying to some but its not a big issue and therefore liveable. Yea Face the Raven one is absolute the worst but the rest are minor. As i said it adds to the nature of the show of things don't always go in sync or how we want
And as I said, the title sequence should be professionally done. Honestly, it has no connection to the nature of the show - it's a simple matter of an audio error, nothing philosophical.

as i said its nothing to lose sleep over and also as i said in the show there are times that things dont happen the way we want it to, so there are a few episodes its out of sync its not the end of the world. i certainly wont be getting annoyed by it except for Face the Raven thats the only one thats the biggest fail the rest a livable
Shame that 8x11, 9x00, 9x01 and 9x03 are all in sync, just the WRONG sync...

@@hada__02 Beats me! Even more baffling considering the theme has sound effects that sync up with the visuals. It's incredibly sloppy and I have no idea how it made it to broadcast, let alone on so many episodes.

You'd get the same effect by playing a bunch of the in sync title sequences at once. . .if you started each of these out of sync titles with the visuals in sync it would be a mess
I noticed this especially with Face the Raven, but it didn't bother me at all. I thought it fit in well with the story more than anything, and sometimes adjustments such as these above help suit the storytelling process. It shows that pace, audio and visuals have been considered more than normal, as they haven't just "slapped the title sequence in" without thinking about what comes before or after it.
While I can see where you're coming from, it appears pretty unprofessional to me, as there are specific sound effects in the title sequence (i.e. just before Capaldi's name pops up) that are put out of place as well, and certain beats are meant to match certain visuals. It may well be that it is intentional, but for some like myself it is incredibly jarring and unpleasant to watch. Even if the intention is as you say, I've never found it to "help suit the storytelling process;" it's never been necessary in the past, and I don't think it's necessary now.
S9 ep10 is just a hot mess in the intro department.

I agree it is very unprofessional, but come on, people can bitch about something that IS in fact barely noticeable.
While I agree with you to a point, the problem with this is that, while not always the case, in numerous episodes it is particularly noticeable - especially because it is so inconsistent. Plus, there are numerous points where audio cues match up with visuals (the cogs lighting up at the beginning; the clock vortex appearing; the TARDIS flashing into the names), which, when you know what matches with what, makes it quite annoying. The majority of viewers don't notice, no, but there are plenty of people like myself who see it clear as day.
S9e10 is insanely off sync. S9e01 looks pretty good to me. Personally prefer the first shot of the Tardis there over the in sync version.
The first time I saw those Face the Raven titles I burst out laughing of how much stupidity has gotten into the BBC's VFX Team and said "WOW WELL DONE MATES YOU GOTTEN US TO THE POINT OF SUICIDE FROM MISALIGNED AUDIO FROM AN OPENING OF A TV SHOW!"

Ok, we al make mistakes. But when your job is to put music and videos so they line up with extremely obvious cues and you screw it up 9 TIMES then it may be time to reconsider your career choice
