The Truman Doctrine, The Marshall Plan and Stalin's Response - Superpower Relations GCSE History

- Following Stalin's expansion into Europe after WW2, tensions began to rise between the superpowers. The US President Truman, gave a speech in which he outlined his 'doctrine' of preventing the spread of communism. Then the Marshall Plan was set up to support the doctrine. Stalin responded by setting up similar organisations.
This video covers the Edexcel GCSE History syllabus for Superpower Relations and the Cold War 1941-91. It will be useful no matter which exam board you are studying though.

GCSEs are next month and I haven't started revising and I got a 3 in my history prelims. Am I cooked?
@@mymumoverwaterstheflowersd8071 bro dw i got a U in maths and i ended up passing its not the same ik but i’m doing my A levels now so that surely means something 😭😭😭😭
@puddingcarl okay thank you mate 😭😭 I hope you're doing well with your A-Levels
@@mymumoverwaterstheflowersd8071 No you can still revise now and do really well. After paper one history mock I knew I would fail bc it went really badly and I managed to up my grade to a 7 by learning the other topics really well. I find the best way to learn content is to make flashcards with dates on one side, events on the other and line them up and try to put them in order, also do lots of practise questions! good luck
Hello again! Haven't seen you in a while after finishing history GCSE, glad to see you still uploading
I achieved an 8 thanks to your help, hopefully those who do Edexcel history will benefit too 😄
Hey, it's so good to hear from you! Well done on the grade and I'm glad to have helped!
thank you for this!! it was really helpful
I'm so glad you found it useful 💗
Yay! Welcome back
Thank you!
2:12 Could you check to see if the $17 billion figure is correct? I do history GCSE and I was told it was $12.7 billion. Other sources, though, state it was around $13-$15 billion. "Congress overwhelmingly passed the Economic Cooperation Act of 1948, and on April 3, 1948, President Truman signed the act that became known as the Marshall Plan. Over the next four years, Congress appropriated $13.3 billion for European recovery." - US National Archives
My revision guide and notes say that it was around $13 billion of aid between 1948 and 1952
I’ve also learnt it was $13 billion
just google it brudda
Why was Comecon not that successful? Thanks for the great video
Hey, I was wondering if you will do a-level history videos :))
Hey good to hear from you! I'm afraid it will be some significant time until we get to a level!
I have been taught that the Marshall plan gave $13 billion in aid so I was wondering which figure is correct. 13 or 17 billion?
It depends who you ask. Figures are given between 12 and 19 billion dollars. Examiners are not going to worry about these tiny details though. As long as your figure lines up with the estimates it will be credited.
Hey! Firstly thanks a lot for these videos, they are very helpful.
I had a question at 4:19- How was France included in Cominform?
- I thought France with ally of US and Britain
- France gained $2.7 billion from Marshall Plan in agreement for trading with US but how could they do so with being in Cominform?
it was only the french communist party that was included in the cominform
just like the italian communist party
who were actually pretty close to winning the elections in 48, but the americans sabotaged it and made sure their favoured candidates won. So we could have seen a communist Italy, if it werent for the americans ruining the elections
Thanks!
damn theres americans watching this as well?
Thank you so much!!!
what exactly is the truman doctrine- is it just the containment policies and that truman was against capitalism, or is it something more specific?
Yeah. Doctrine just means a kind of idea so Trumans idea was he waz going to try to contain communism
It's a pity the vido doesn't mention that the main goal of the plan was to open up markets for the US goods (the country yet again, just like in the times of Great Depression, faced an overproduction crisis). Besides, the countries were to join NATO. Hence, endorse the deployments of the NATO (read: USA) military bases. As a result, western European countries becaume US satellites, Watch Naom Chomsky speaking on the subject. In other words, "the pot calling the kettle black" (the US blaming the Soviet Union for promoting its political system to the Eastern European countries, China and Korea). As a matter of fact, Great Britain's elite had suffered an immense reputational blow when Churchill was voted out. A rep of the Labour party took the post of the British PM. I bet that sent shivers down British nomenclature's spinal cords. Something had to be done -- the "witch hunt" and "red scare" began (so much for freedom and democracy).
Yeah this is a 5 minute revision video for GCSE students. It's not meant to be a comprehensive run down. I also talk about NATO and Churchill in other videos.
@@evawind finally someone else talking about how the western european countries were also puppets under american rule.
every1 loves to call the eastern bloc as being satellites and puppets
that was also the case in the western bloc!!!
