well LA devotee wasn't really about loving LA, it was about corruption.
I was one of those failed child actors. Had a few parts but never made it big. What I learned is that show-biz is such a soul-sucking, heartless industry and, frankly, I'm glad that I got out when I did. I got to have a (sorta) normal childhood. But... I still feel nostalgia for my time there. I feel a yearning to go back and try again. Being in the business and not being a star is like being a gambler on a never-ending losing streak. You always know, deep down, that you're not gonna make it but you still keep trying anyway. It's painful. But from the moment you leave all you want is to feel the pain again.
This song captures the life of a performer so well, it's scary. Brendon Urie is truly something special.

I gave up my entire youth, education, etc in hopes of being famous. I worked my ass off but I was used, lied to, stolen from, taken advantage of, and spit out by the time I was 25. The entertainment industry is cruel and heartless but I am glad it didn’t make me cruel and heartless. This song never fails to bring me to tears because that part of me never died. And I know my pain is the same pain that so many dreamers have experienced. And there will always be a part of me that misses it. Being a performer isn’t a choice, it’s who you are. I’m sad to admit that I’d do it all again, at the drop of a hat, despite all the pain it’s brought me.

This song reminds me of my time in high school theatre. I made friends, opened up, created memories, fell in love. Then it all fell apart. Had on old friend, this was our favourite band, sadly I found out how much of a monster they were, manipulated everyone. This song tells the story of every actor, influencers, directors, etc in LA
Here’s my idea for the music video:
It starts with a bus pulling away from a station and a young woman is seen. She starts looking around as the song starts (“the moment you arrived, they built you up”) and then she sees it: the largest billboard in LA and SHE is on it. Suddenly, the sun peaks out and she extends her arm out to shade her eyes from it (“the sun was in your eyes”). Then, she begins to realize she is finally becoming famous, and she truly has “made it” (“you couldn’t believe it”).
She then makes her way over to the Hollywood Walk of Fame (“riches all around, your walking stars are on the ground, you start to believe it”) and while she’s there, she runs into a young fan who asks for a picture with her (every face along the boulevard is a dreamer just like you”). She then realizes she has to be at the recording studio to record some of her songs (“you looked at death in a tarot card and you saw what you had to do”)
In the chorus, it cuts to Brendon playing this song on a piano and repeatedly cuts between Brendon and the young woman, who even covers Dying in LA, and every time it cuts between Brendon and the young woman, her growth is shown, as she opens for artists on tour, wins multiple awards, and is even featured on magazine covers. She is at the top of her career
However, paparazzi are everywhere and start becoming very intrusive to the point where the young woman falls into severe depression (“nights at the chateau, trapped in your sunset bungalow”) and she is even seen crying. Finally, she can’t take it anymore. She grabs a med bottle and swallows all of its contents.
She is then seen in a hospital bed. Her family walks in with the doctor right behind them, with the most solemn look ever, and says to her that she isn’t gonna make it (that part is self explanatory).
Her mom gets on her knee, reaches her hand out to her and starts crying. The woman looks at her, with a heartbroken smile on her face and says it will be alright (“every face along the boulevard is a dreamer just like you, you looked at death in a tarot card and you saw what you had to do”)

I wish he did more songs like this. Don't get me wrong, I really love his upbeat songs, the production on this album is great, but I feel like these songs sometimes overshadow his amazing voice because there are literally so many things to focus on. More stripped down songs like this one really showcase his angelic vocals.

I absolutely agree. While songs like Roaring 20s are really awesome and phenomenal, songs like Impossible Year and Dying In LA really shows Brendon's vocals, creating grand opportunities to show his creativity in the melody, accompanied with few simple backing instruments.
