    Just discovered this guy today. I read a lot of trash about him on the internet (bad player, bad tone, snake oil salesman, overpriced, bad teacher, etc..) I've only watched a few free lessons on you tube so far, but they all had a clear, easy to understand and implement message that was somewhat unique to anything I'd seen or heard before. The lesson prices were actually less than lessons at my local store. So far, I'm impressed.

    I'm a violin and a guitar player, and this man is completely accurate. The independence of the two sides of the brain is what accomplishes the most, because instead of messing everything, it's like having two brains each devoted to a different task.

  • @TheBoomtown4

    Watched this two days ago and didn’t really think anything of it. Remembered it today and tried it and I now realize how the majority of my mistakes are coming from my pick hand, that my left hand inherently knows where to go. I don’t need to think about the fret hand nearly as much, I’m wasting my energy and focus. not only a speed tip, which it is, but also an accuracy focus and overall playing tip. Wow.

    interesting..When I was studying classical guitar at University my professor talked a lot about hand AND finger independence. This idea can also be applied to passages that have counterpoint or where you are playing more than one voice (note) at a time. I once played bach for my professor and he said " wow that sounds great! good work! Can you play just the pbass for me at the same speed" I couldn't cuz I hadn't practiced it that way. Since then I like to break down all my pieces into bass, middle voices, and melody. Makes for clearer voice seperation (ie lets say you wanna bring out one specific note of a chord more than the others) and more musicality and dynamic at times

    When he brings up the hands is very relatable. I started on Violin and one of the earliest lessons I got was to learn how to move each hand independently of the other. Bit difficult at first but makes things easier as you go along if you can nail it in the beginning.

  • @michaelinglis8516

    I realized this last year. Its very difficult at first to do just the right hand and practice by itself. But even though I noticed it I haven't been practicing it with confidence just every now and then. Now that I know for sure that's what's happening im going to learn my parts with just the right hand more often. Great lesson as always.

    This fellow is a very knowledgeable and patient teacher. Hell of a beard too! But seriously, it's nice to hear how he breaks up stuff into easily managed parts...this was always the issue I confronted when I was teaching guitar: how to break a complicated thing down into smaller, easier "bites," so to speak. On a few occasions, I was very successful and I could see the lights go on in the students' eyes, but most of the time, I struggled a lot. I get at least as much good info from this gent about teaching techniques as I do about ways to improve my own playing. A real win-win deal for sure.

    This actually works. I'm no shred master but the process of having you right hand move correctly for what you play does improve your overall speed of 'hand placement' & 'wrist movement'. It's the wrist movement & placement (technique) which I found improved immensely.

    Oh, man--something I wish somebody had shown me years ago--starting with my barking mad teacher who used to shout and throw music around the room when I made what he considered stupid mistakes. He was a very talented guy--talented to a fault. He played by instinct and had no grasp of why a schlep like me couldn't do the same. But I digress...
    This is the kind of insight a *real* teacher can give you! And by a real teacher, I mean one who can put himself in the student's place and tell him what's going on in his own mind. Which in this case is my mind too. Well, better late than never--Thanks, Tom Hess!

  • @jeffloy4638
    @jeffloy4638 2 місяці тому

    This is spot on! Training hands separately will get you a long way.
    Chunking also fits nicely with this concept. You’ll notice you can play short fragments of a lick much faster than the whole thing. When you practice those “chunks” individually, you’re programming them into your brain as a unit as opposed to processing note by note, thereby freeing up processing power. Then, as you start chaining those chunks together, the whole lick becomes one unit to your brain, which frees up more processing power.
    Yes, guitar playing requires some physical development/endurance, but most of the time, the hurdle has more to do with bad programming. Do that, and you’ll find yourself playing faster AND way more relaxed.

    This was cool. I never thought of guitar playing as a mental practice. I always just thought of it as being a plan and do process. Let the music flow, but when you really break it down you do have to process what you are playing until it's natural and on instinct. I have a bunch of cover songs and originals that I
    Just pick up the guitar and play. Never have to think about the shapes and picking patterns. Already locked in, unless I haven't played a certain song in so long and have to re learn it all over again.
