I'm making a rawhide mallet soon and this was a helpful video, it's shocking how little information there is on rawhide mallets. Thanks for your video!

The first mallet I purchased I received the synthetic rubbery one. I used it a little bit but it really didnt seem to do any moving of the metal if that makes sense. I have since purchased a genuine rawhide mallet and I now I know to condition it😁 Thank you so much for all these great tips and tricks I always watch and rewatch these videos and still always learn something new😉 💖💍💖

Will it soften it if I just soak it but don’t hit it outside or on an anvil right after? (I live downtown in a city so there isn’t really anywhere I can do that that isn’t private property ha)

I have heard a suggestion , to soak in boiling water 15 - 20 minutes , and then whack it on an anvil till splayed and
softened . I like the idea that you suggested , about filing the ends first . Then may I soak it in boiling water 15 - 20 minutes , then whack it on an anvil a while . Do you think boiling water may be useful ?

Yes an anvil will definitely soften it up. You just need to be careful because if the mallet becomes saturated with water or even just has a little surface damp left on it, it will make an anvil or any steel tools rust so make sure it's as dry as possible and it would be a good idea to wipe the anvil down with tool oil after 😊 Boiling water would speed the process up but I know a couple of people who soaked for too long and ended up with mush so slow and steady is probably a good idea 😊

Hello. I love your tutorials! Please can I ask your advice on the best vegan alternatives to rawhide mallets? Thanks so much

Unfortunately, there isn't really one. I keep looking and trying various alternatives but so far they haven't been very good and the rubber/nylon ones break down quickly so while they're better for the animals, they've bad for the environment as they need binning so often. If you manage to find something let me know as I live in Bristol, the vegan capital of the UK so always on the hunt for alternatives.

You could use a very dense hardwood or buy a senthetic leather and roll it and soak in shellac etc, like you would for rawhide. Interesting topic!

@@kimthomson400 hello! Thanks for your reply. Yes unfortunately that's what I've been finding & certainly don't want to be wasteful in my practice. Take a look at Alex's response below which sounds promising! We can but try. Best wishes to you 😊

Another trick to prevent getting debris stuck in the mallet when whacking, is to sweep before bludgeoning the surface 😄
