I have seen this many times before, but seeing it tonight made my eyes water with laughter and loving every line of the sketch. When Grandpa is told to forget about Balaklava and concentrate on the rhyme and making it rhyme by speeding it up is one of the funniest things I have seen. I love to revisit this scene many times. I love the way he always puts the sweets back after sucking them ! Perhaps we should revive this quaint habit in modern Britain !
How by rapping on his table? No, rapping on his door. My mum introduced us to Will Hay and his fellow actors and I can still remember us all sitting around the TV (one of us holding up the arial!) and laughing as Dad rushes through the poem to make the last word rhyme. Marvellous. Thanks for posting.
Interesting Fact: When Harbotle recites the rhyme he says " When the tide runs low in the Devils Cove" but when the dad recites it he says "When the tide runs low in the Smugglers Cove" I first watched this film around 40 years ago and i noticed it then while i was trying to learn the rhyme myself 😂
HOW is it possible that this can reduce you to tears of laughter? . . . .I know 30s /40s England witnessed some gruesome times, and though I'm sure this was appreciated at the time, it DOUBLY is now . . . .
why cant I.T.V put these films on late at night instead of the shite they put on now. I don't want to watch a bloody roulette wheel on my telly, Get these films on telly. It cant cost that much..
When it first started up, Channel 4 used to broadcast classic 1940s films every Friday night. They presumably stopped because "da yoof" couldn't handle films in black & white. :-(
My favourite clip from a very funny film. Great comedy with no smut or swearing - modern writers take heed, it can be done!
"modern writers take heed" - Booze Cruise - 1, 2 and 3 were on here but got removed - worth buying for the 10 quid on amazon I reckon
another great will hay film that should never be forgotten.
Austin McAleese brilliant
That blackcurrant gum part cracks me right up everytime I see it 😂
Fantastic, can watch this over and over and always brings a smile. R.I.P Will and the guys.
Will Hay is dead!? When did this happen? 😭
1939
One of may favourite scenes from one of my favourite films.
Monty python took notes clearly. Will Hay is brilliant.

I was brought up with Will Hay excellent comedy Where's that Fire 🔥 is another good one 👍🏼
The headless horsman in this film is Desmond Llewellyn, Q from the Bond films.
dads line at 3.16 I wonder how many takes that took? the timing is fabulous brought tears to my eyes so funny
You've got a father living? What do they hold him together with..wire? Lol genius
"Don't worry about Balaclava." LOL
Lickety spit Lickety spit....been searching for that bit for years
Moore Marriott is a star!
This is absolute brilliant. Quality comedy from a more civilized age. Thanks for uploading. Respect Paid.

Funniest thing I've ever seen in my life

my fav clip also, I had this film once on old format (Beta). They don't make them like this anymore, Will Hay and his sidekicks....priceless ;)
“Come on we’re going to meet Adam” 😂😂😂

School broken up! Moore was a quality act, pity WH parted company, quality trio.
Comedy gold.
Harry Enfield based 'The old gits' characters on Harbottle.
Hello my old friends...I have introduced you to some new ones today...
Will Hay was a Comic Genius ..and the lads with him the same .😂😂😂
Someone needs to scan the negatives of these great old films to preserve then forever in high resolution
thanks for uploading, love this film so much!!!!!
The clock on the old man's mantlepiece is the same as the ones in the station in 'Oh Mr Porter.' Re-using props, no doubt.
Interestingly Moore Marriot was not that old when he appeared in these movies,as per Clive Dunne in Dad's Army.
He couldn't have been that old , when his dad was in the same film 😉
"Don't answer the phone! It might be the 'edless 'orseman!"
The 'edlass 'orseman. Classic. And there's a scene at brooklands too! So funny.
True Classics
I'm sure there's a bit missing to this clip where Will says " he rode into garage cuz he couldn't stop, flipity flop flipity flop"
That line is at the police station before they visit the old man
Bloody marvellous!
School broken up?
BRILLIANT :D
No locks on the door in those days...
The young tubby actor had a Pub in Bath I have been told is that right? They were a funny team of Actors sadly missed today
That's Graham Moffatt. The old guy is More Marriott. Will's films with them were the best he ever did.
Yes. It's since been converted to a Nursing home. His 2 sons and daughter still live in the area.
LOL!! Brilliant
that is soo good
Lickety spit... :-))
He's not a policeman - he's a naughty boy!
david wolfe Wasn't there a very similar line in Life of Brian? Those Pythons are obviously fans of Harbottle.
Haysham Photography Cannon and Ball did a similar re-make of this film :)
Please don't mention the C&B film. It's really not worth it.
That's a matter of opinion surely
@@mandychaplin it’s called The Boys in Blue, directed by Val Guest who was one of the writers of Ask a Policeman .
Anyone knows if Harbotle played in a football match for BugglesKelly FC? I can't find it anywhere.
Hahaha hahaha 😆
Why did you cut and ruin this scene?!!!
Because the blackcurrant joke made me laugh and I wanted to share it on Facebook in 2010. This was the only way to do it.
whats with the green screen? no picture
z
We want this to be a new TV show. It is rubbish my friends are adictted to this clip and it's annoying
