The first and in my humble opinion one of the best. Most of these actors saw service in WW2 or did national service so marching and drilling was just a matter of brushing up their skills.
William Hartnell was in the Royal Armoured Corps in WW2, Bob Monkhouse was in the RAF for his National Service, Shirley Eaton wasn’t in the Army nor the NAAFI but was the gold-painted girl in James Bond Goldfinger, Eric Barker was part of the WW2 Armed Forces Radio Show ‘Merry Go Round’, Dora Bryan was part of ENSA in Italy, Bill Owen was in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, Kenneth Connor was an Infantry Gunner with the Middlesex Regiment as well as part of ENSA, Charles Hawtrey was a stage, musical and radio actor during the war, Kenneth Williams was a Sapper with the Royal Engineers then later part of the Combined Services Entertainment Unit, Terence Longdon was a pilot with the Fleet Air Arm, Norman Rossington did his National Service in the RAF, Hattie Jacques was a Nurse in the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) during the Blitz, and Gerald Campion was a Radio Operator in the RAF during the war.
Saw a bio on Monty. He accepted the surrender of all German forces in Northern Germany and Denmark. The German delegation of Generals stood in formation when Monty showed. He said, "Who are you?" , they gave their name and rank. He paused for a moment and then said, "Never heard of you." He repeated that process for every one of them.
You can't beat class, they got away with so much innuendo. How ever cheap the films were made they still had the best slapstick actor's and actresses in the business. ;-). They couldn't make them these days, B-)
Saw this movie Carry on Sargentant just after doing national service at Wacol QLD1956. I thought they must have been watching us. We had some of strangest characters in the platoon by the way it was Charlie Company - Medical platoon. It was LOL....
When I first saw this movie, I swore I'd seen it before. I believe it was remade in the 1980s as "STRIPES" with Warren Oates as the cranky drill sergrant. Funny thing... at times, Kenneth Connor reminds me of Sylvester McCoy. I wonder if they might be distantly related?
He was always typecast short-back-and-sides manger, criminal or soldier. That was until Dr Who which was different and he rose to the role admirably and that is why he will always be the best one although I also like some of the others.
I was looking for the medical when the candidates are being recruited. Start by teaching the recruit not to challenge but accept the lolly stick goes into the underpants then into the mouth and is then discarded.
This first carry on has a serious point to make - end of war and blokes did not need punishment that would not be permitted in peacetime work. Still shouting at people at work was not going to work in work after WW2.

Less farcical than later ones.

that was very stupid. he was lucky not to receive a hard blow in his arrogant face before, during the war.
Only watched this film for the first time yesterday !
"Your rank ?"
"That's a matter of opinion" Classic line , that cracked me up :)
Ah the good old days, would like to see a 2024 version of this!
I love the black and white Carry Ons.

That's the best performance I've ever seen from Cumberbatch.
It's a shame that Eric Barker, {the officer}, didn't appear in more Carry on films.
had a very bad stroke in the 60s
he was a very talented actor and made everybody laugh. so unlucky to get a heart attack.
He was in four if you count the crap that was Emmannuelle.
ah william hartnell, the very first dr who
And always will be the FIRST.
He was always typecast short-back-and-sides manger, criminal or soldier. That was until Dr Who which was different and he rose to the role admirably and that is why he will always be the best one although I also like some of the others.
And the legendary Bill Owen.
On another Universe, Mr Hartnell was a regular in the Carry-on series.
Love to see someone remix this with boot camp dialogue from Full Metal Jacket!
My God! It's Doctor Who!
Flattely:Please don’t make the Doctor Mad
Staring Doctor Who and Compo...!
Reminds me of basic training at atr pirbright!
Would like to watch the whole movie
Bob Monkhouse @ 01:24 !!
Nigel Harrison pity he only did the one Carry On film, it would have been brilliant if he had done more!
Yes, you are. It was made in 1958. Its 50 years since theirrt 'Carry On' was made.
