- A tutorial on how to tie dye fondant and a demonstration on using The Mat by Sweetwise.
The Mat can be purchased from: sweetwise.com/the-mat-all.html...
The Fondant I used in this video is Satin Ice brand, the one I prefer for my cakes. You can purchase this high-quality brand in many online and retail locations that specialize in cake decorating supplies. I typically purchase my fondant from Global Sugar Art: www.globalsugarart.com/cat.php...
I hope that clears up any questions! Feel free to message me or leave a comment with any other questions!
You can see pictures of the completed cake I made using this technique on my blog: happycakesbakes.blogspot.com/2... It was for a 70's themed party!

My son asked for a tie-dyed fondant birthday cake. Having never used fondant before, you can imagine how happy I was to find your video! Wish me luck!!
@desiree55196 *I've updated the description to include links directly to the source where i buy my fondant, as well as where "The Mat" can be purchase!
A blast from the past!!! I remember when we used to have to tie dye our own t-shirts.!!!! Love the fondant!!
I loved the idea of your fondant mat....!!! Never seen this way to work the fondant before and it looks so amazingly easy, no messes, and you can move the fondant as you preferred. .. definitely worth to try. .. thanks for your videos. . I love them all👍👍👍👍
@desiree55196 Hi there, I did not make the fondant that I used in this tutorial, I used pre-made Satin Ice, a really great brand. It's all I use now! You can buy it online at globalsugarart (dot) com. Sorry, UA-cam will not let me post the direct link in the comments area. If you want to make fondant, I have a Marshmallow Fondant recipe posted on my blog (link posted in the description). There are many UA-cam vids demonstrating the method :) HTH!
the idea of the plastic is the best... I love it, I gonna try for the birthdays cake´s of my daughter... Thanks a lot... God bless you!
Thank you! My name is Renee, I am so happy that you like my video and this worked for you! I loved baking when I was your age, but I didn't get into decorating until much more recently! Keep it up, I'm sure you are awesome!!
I loved your video. You decorate cakes like I do. I love using the mat... makes rolling out fondant so much easier!
This was awesome. Thank you for sharing. You made the process look so effortless. I will have to try this out for sure.
Renee, this is the most amazing cake that I have ever seen. I have always been so worried about mixing fondants of different colours together all this time and you've just blown that right out of the water. Pink cake box eat your heart out!!! WOW.
love this idea. i will be doing this for childrens day in my church.. thanks for sharing!
How kind you are for replying so quickly. That was so helpful.
It's actually a wonderful help. It keeps the fondant from drying out while you are rolling it and you don't need any kind of "dust" so you have extra working time for smoothing. Also, the fact that the fondant stays attached to The Mat, until you are ready to release it makes it so easy to move around and position a large piece of fondant on a cake!
that tutorial was very well done, thank you. Some people tend to start talking and they just keep going on and on! The speeded up bits were a great idea and you certainly gave me some ideas. I've always struggled with the whole fondant sticking to the surface etc.. and I will certainly get some plastic sheets.. Thank you for taking the time to do that, it was great!
OOOHHHH!!! OMG!!! It's a marvelous, beautiful cake!! I will try to do it for my daughter's birthday. Congratulations and kisses from Spain!!
It IS a beautifully done tie dye cake! I should have learned this a few years ago, cuz I had an aunt who had a tie dye party! But, I'll keep this in mind for another future tie dye party! Thanks! 😀
I loved your creativity with all the colors!!! I can't wait to tty a black and white swirl design!!
Awesome video and instructions!!
Thanks!!!
this is awesome! i am going to be trying to make my first cake this weekend for my baby shower. I should have probably practiced before hand just hope everything turns out.. I am going to be trying to make my own fondant so well see how it goes but im so glad you did this cuz tie dye is my favorite!!! :)
thanks for showing us!
Wow...thats really cool! I can't wait to cover a cake in this cool colored fondant!
The plastic sheet I used is made specifically for use with fondant. It's called The Mat from Sweetwise, I have a link in the description box to where I purchased it from :)
Great tutorial! You make it look effortless and easy to do. Thank you for sharing your technique.
I like it because your work is so neat and clean.
Sure! You can just use a little ball of remnant fondant in your hand! I actually do this a lot, especially if I have an odd shaped cake. You can dust a little cornstarch on your ball of fondant if you find it sticky, but usually if you start lightly it just won't stick to itself. It's great because with this method the ball of fondant will conform to the shape of your cake!
Thanks Renee! I’m looking forward to more videos! As well as my Mat!
i lovveeee this!! i have the mat too and cant wait to try it out!! for my ketuchup bottle cake i used it :) you have real talent!! i love this so much!! xxx
best instructions and results I've yet to see.
Thank you for your help :) i love your technique and i will be trying the mat soon. you are a great cake artist!!
This is awesome!!! I love how it turned out!!! Great Job!!!
@ssl0v3ss Thank you for the compliment! I'm really flattered that people like my work and find my videos helpful! Good Luck with the Mat, you are going to love it, I'm sure!
Absolutely beautiful! You are awesome at what you do. Definitely subscribing.
Yes! You can use a ball of fondant as a fondant smoother! I know it seems like it would stick, but it doesn't! Just start off lightly if you think your fondant is tacky... works like a charm... I often use that for domed or other odd shaped cakes :)
Some cake decorators do use craft store vinyl, I believe that is where the creators of The Mat got the idea. The Mat is different because it is made with food grade material, where as the stuff you can buy at the craft store is not rated for use with food. I can't recommend that you use it, but if you choose to it should work just about the same!
Hi! I think what you are asking about is called vinyl here in the states. There are cake decorators who use it, however I do not recommend it because it is generally not rated for food use. That is what makes The Mat from Sweetwise unique, it is food grade vinyl.
Excellent demonstration!!! Thank you for sharing. As for the left over fondant, I usually use smaller round cutters to make matching cupcakes. You can also use it to make star shapes. Attach the stars to thin floral wire and let dry. Use the stars as a cake topper. Another cake topper, Curly Cues, thin strips of fondant rolled around a straw, let dry then pull straw out :)
I'm glad you were able to work it out!
That...is...awesome!! I'll do that for my cousins birthday!! Thanks!!
Please ignore the ignorant and rude comments....This was AWESOME! I want to try this technique and the white really makes it pop. Well done!
Love it!! Thank u for sharing! I am going to try and do this to the top of a mushroom cake this next week. :)
Wow. What a pretty cake, beginning with adding the fondant.
Thank you for sharing this step by step method of making Tie Dye fondant. I will do one of my cakes with Tie Dye as a theme next time... :)
The fondant smoother helps to give the fondant a buffed/polished look... because your hands aren't perfectly flat/smooth it's really difficult to get a perfectly smooth surface. The smooth rigid surface of the fondant smoother eliminates any bumps or other defects.
@madeitwithlove Thank you, I'm so glad you found my video helpful! The leftover fondant is very pretty... but all I do is mix it together and use it as a base when I need brown or black fondant... Then you don't need as much gel color. Just wrap it in plastic wrap and store it in a zip lock bag, or back in a fondant bucket... definitely don't throw it out! Or maybe push it through an extruder or garlic press and use a knife to cut it off at small lengths for home made rainbow sprinkles?
You made it look so easy but when I do it, mine looks like a mess. Well done and I'll try your method next time. Love your colour combination too! THank you!
Excellent job...I love the way it turned out. Thank you for sharing. I'm thinking of getting myself the mat, btw, looks incredibly helpful :)
I purchased the Mat directly from Sweetwise. The link is in the description box. At this point they have and updated one with measurements and different sizes!
Thank you for the compliment! I do have photo's of this cake on my blog and on my website. I UA-cam doesn't allow links in the comments, but I added a direct link to think cake on my blog in the description box :) It was for a 70's themed party, so the cake was decorated with smiley faces, peace signs, flowers and black disco dancer silhouettes! I used black disco dust on the silhouettes so they were kind of sparkly in the lights from the party!
@9snaker Haha! There are a couple of things you can do to get a level cake: 1) I always bake my cakes at 325 regardless of what the recipe calls for. It takes a bit longer but bakes and rises more evenly. 2) When you take the cakes out, if they have domed, lay a clean towel on to of them and carefully & gently press a little and they should even out. 3) If your cakes still aren't level, trim the tops flat! But with the 1st two steps I usually don't have to trim them :)
Hi! If you don't have a fondant smoother, you can just use a ball of fondant in your hand! Start lightly at first, but it doesn't really stick... sometimes I think I prefer this to the fondant smoother, especially for odd shapes or curves :)
For the 8" cake in this video I used approximately 24 oz total (probably a little more, I had a lot of excess) divided by the different colors. When trying do decide how much fondant to use you can go to global sugar art (dot) com and scroll down to the "Information" heading on the left hand side (in the blue column). There is a link for "How Much Fondant Do I Need" and it has a pretty accurate chart. I'm sorry I can't post the direct link in the comments!
Wow!!! Amazing and I love it. Thanks a lot
@hayarsalanecasa Thank YOU! I'm so happy you liked my video... and you are going to LOVE the Mat. It makes working with fondant so much faster and easier!
That's magnificent and creative, nice work!
@hockeychick1301 Hi! The final, finished cake was a 3 tier with 10"-8"-6" cakes. The cake I covered in this video was the 8" cake. I bake 2 layers in 2" tall pans and then split the layers. So the final cake has 4, roughly 1", layers of cake and 3 layers of filling. I have a mixture of Wilton and Magic Line brand pans... I prefer the Magic Line pans because they bake more evenly and the cakes are more level. I hope that answers your question!
Sorry about that! I just updated the link to Sweetwise, where you can purchase The Mat. They have several different ones at this point!
@cvilla97 I did try the Mat with marshmallow fondant when I first got it. I had a lot of bubbles, like you said you get, most advice that I read said it was because the Mat wasn't properly "seasoned." If you peel back the Mat and sprinkle a small amount of Powdered Sugar then re-roll at the end it helps a lot (for both sides). I've had the most success with pre-made Satin Ice fondant though, and haven't tried Marshmallow fondant again since my Mat has been well broken in.
thank you so so much for teaching me a new technique
Awesome job and video either way! Thanks for your honesty!
Thank you!
I no longer make my own fondant, the more I started making cakes the more I appreciated the time I would save buy purchasing a quality commercial fondant. So I use Satin Ice brand, and that is what you see in this video. If you would like to try making your own fondant, I have the Marshmallow Fondant recipe, that I used to use, posted on my blog (link to my blog in the description box, the fondant recipe is listed under "recipes' on the left hand menu). Hope that helps!
I did! I have a link to the pictures on my blog, in the description box! It was for a 70's themed party so it has smiley faces, peace signs and flowers!
Totally going to use this idea for my next experimental cake ahah! Thanks :D!
amazing tutorial thank u so much is so cute, im new doing cakes but i like original ckes and this is so clever, love it...
Thank you! The first song is "What a Day for a Daydream" performed by Jason Castro when he was on American Idol, the second song is "Over the Rainbow" also performed by Jason Castro :)
When I made this is was for a 70's themed party... so I used yellow smiley faces, peace signs and flowers all in the same colors I used for the tie dye... I also used some black cut outs that I think provided some needed contrast.
THAT LOOKS JUST BEAUTIFUL :D
That cake was beautiful!
Hi There! I know what you mean about the smoother sticking- If it's still too "sticky" for the fondant smoother after using just my hands, I'll use a little ball of fondant. I know it seems counter-intuitive because you'd think the fondant sticks to itself... rub lightly at first to get the feel for it and then just smooth normally... works great! Then, if I need to, I can go back with the fondant smoother to get super crisp lines edges!
Awww... thanks! I'm so glad you liked it!
Hi! Yes, you can certainly used marshmallow fondant for the tie dye technique. I have not had luck using marshmallow fondant with the Mat, however, I do know that other people have. But you don't really need the Mat, you could just roll it out as you normally would. Good Luck!
If you don't have a fondant smoother, you can just use a ball of fondant in your hand! Start lightly at first, but it doesn't really stick... sometimes I think I prefer this to the fondant smoother, especially for odd shapes or curves :)
wonderful job love the use of the plastic
Yes, you can buy vinyl at the craft store... There are plenty of cake decorators who do, however, that vinyl is not rated for food use and I don't recommend it. That being said, I'm sure that's where Sweetwise got the idea for their food grade product. I'm glad you liked the video :)
That is just so fiendishly clever and easy...and so beautiful :-)
that looks super great , amazing video . i Love it ¡
brilliant demo, thank you!
@thelaurenjv I'm using Satin Ice fondant... once I started using it, I haven't really gone back to MMF. I hate the sticky and powdered sugary mess too! The Mat eliminates all that... if anything I use a tiny bit of shortening to help keep the fondant from sticking to my hands when I knead it... but that's it!
This is fabulous, I luv it. It great creativity anyway.
I loved it! Thank you for the tutorial!!
This is not Marshmallow Fondant, it is Satin Ice brand commercial fondant. It was super stretchy because it was a really hot and humid day that I made this video!
i would love to see neon bright colors. but this is the best video i have seen yet. thank you
Beautiful technique👍👍👍
Thank you for the tutorial !!! I just ordered The Mat ;-)
Awesome. Very helpful. and you are a good teacher.
Thanks.
I loved it! Your video is so easy to follow.... Can't wait to try it.
FK
No, I do not add any extra shortening to my fondant. You "condition" the Mat when you first get it, with a thin layer of shortening that you then wipe off as much as you can. After that you don't need to re-apply unless you have to give the mat a good washing, a simple wipe usually does it. The fondant looks a bit shiny because you don't use any powder when you roll it- so the top doesn't dry out. This particular day it was very hot & humid, so it was even shinier than normal...
That mat you are using is awesome.
@sezpipalicious the icing on this cake was a chocolate French Buttercream. French Buttercream is made similarly to Swiss Meringue Buttercream but uses only the yolks instead of the egg whites. It is delicious and rich and takes the chocolate flavor very well :)
@saraconnar I used to make my own marshmallow fondant, but I tried Satin Ice pre-made fondant and I don't think I'll ever go back, lol! The taste is not bad, and as you can see it's nice and stretchy and a dream to work with. Also, my marshmallow fondant recipe didn't work well with The Mat, but I haven't had a single problem with Satin Ice!
This is so cool!
Great vid. Thoroughly enjoyed it. xx
All of my cakes are generally about 4" tall, I bake in 2" pans and split my layers (so 4 layers of cake, 3 filling). They do make for pretty tall cakes, but you cut the slices much thinner (1"x2"x4"tall) and it's the perfect amount. The cake in my video is an 8", it serves 24 :)
never mind :P I opened my eyes and saw the details in the info ;) thanks!
wow that looks awesome....thanks for your video
Wow this is all so beautiful....thankyou for sharing....
Thank you! The fondant was shiny because it was an extremely hot and humid day when I filmed this... that, plus I didn't use cornstarch or powdered sugar when rolling (because I used The Mat). :)
Hi! You use shortening to very lightly "season" the Mat the first time you use it, but after that it generally does not need to be greased.
@cvilla97 Yes, I used Chocolate French Buttercream (made with egg yolks) for the cake I used in this video. I typically use Swiss Meringue Butter Cream (made with egg whites). I just melt chocolate and add it to my vanilla butter cream... perhaps I will work out a recipe soon! I just do it by eye or taste, lol!
she makes that soo easy!!!!!
OMG Im so going to try this it looks supper cool , you should do a tutorial on how to do splatter fondant :)
I suppose you could call it "marbling" if you would like. It's certainly the same technique but I would probably only use 2 colors if I was going for a marble look. The tutorial demonstrates how to get a "tie dyed" effect with fondant. I'm sure there are other ways, this is just what I did when I wanted "tie dyed" fondant for my uncles birthday cake :D
Hi! There is no reason a fondant cake can't have filling! The cake in this video was filled with peanut butter cream. But I've done fruit fillings, cream cheese filling (just don't let cream cheese icing touch fondant- it melts it!). Just make sure if you are using a filling other than buttercream you use and icing "dam" and let your cake settle so you don't get a bulge :)
