That man was nothing short of a genius. The greatest song ever written about an instrument, with a hint of mystery on top of it all. I play guitar, I will search the world for a case with my name on it
Check out the channel gemsonvhs there’s great stuff on there. Not Guy Clark good but that’s not an easy feat. Good luck I totally get where you’re coming from.
I got the chance to meet him once and he's as gracious and kind as you think he'd be. He even signed a pretty decent Martin I happened to bring to his show.
Guy Clark, Verlon Thompson, and nine other guys wrote this. Verlon tells the worthwhile story and plays 'The Guitar' with Jorma here: ua-cam.com/video/PW4W3LbJUk0/v-deo.html
Why can't this be played on todays country stations. First time I heard it, I got goosebumps so bad they hurt! You don't get that with what is passing for country today.
I have 3 guitars hanging on my wall one was my dad's one was my grandpa's and the third belonged to my best friends dad all are passed away...this song is awesome
If Chalie Daniels' "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" ever needed a companion song,Guy Clark's The Guitar is it! Same robust story telling, perhaps an unmentioned bit of the devil at play in this song. R.I.P. Guy Clark.Your brilliance left us too soon.
Sorry to see you go, Guy, but I know you'll be back eventually. I loved your songs, especially the ones on Dublin Blues and Boats to Build. But I got an immense amount of pleasure and satisfaction from this song, "The Guitar."
I don't know how I came across this song one day but I probably listened to it at least 5 times in a row that first day. Since then it's in my regular playlist and I gotta hear it almost every day. AMAZING SONG!!!
The guitar work on this tune is extraordinary, lyrics exceptional "I just reared back and burned it" Don't get much better n' this--almost fell out of my Tony Lamas.
Very haunting for me. I have a guitar like this. One chord and it was THE guitar. I can't be the only one out there who knows what this experience is like. Always talked trash about acoustics but one just STOOD out like no other. It was the truth when he wrote it and it's apparently still true to this day. Keep searching, greenhorns, and you'll find it! What a beautiful sound!
I thought there was something wrong with me. Just heard this on pandora and got chills. Came to find it on UA-cam and what do I see in the comments? People saying it caused them chills. Glad to know there are many with a soul from the unknown
My best friend lives in Dallas. I texted him this song.. My boy was in La. About 10 years ago. Went to a music shop. Similar. Bought a Yamaha nylon. After playing for hours. Paid for it and had his name in the case.
What cool lyrics! I just got shivers up the spine for real when he shut the case! Whoa…Awesome song - apart from the killer guitar, I dig the slap bass.
Every time I listen to this song I get goosebumps, cause while I know the story he wrote here is fictional, the feeling isn't from the song so much as the fact that the story behind it is true for someone who has no idea what they're about to do. If I walked into a pawn shop and this happened to me, I wouldn't even be able to think of what to say.. plus, in a way, it already has happened to me, a friend of mine had a birthday and I accidentally threw him a party by going out to the desert and playing in the dirt with my small amp and cheap guitar, next thing I know they're running around me and he's yelling "this is the best birthday ever!" When we got him back to his place, the guy brought out a guitar and amp and told me he wanted me to have it, he figured I would put it to work... well he was right, i play that guitar every day.. it's like it's alive, i can feel it calling my name even right now, "hey, let's wake up the neighborhood."
And yeah, I know I'm a bit out of place, talking about electric guitars here, but I respect Guy Clark for his incredible skills, and I would shake his hand if he was still around. Amazing musician, captured the feeling perfectly in this work of art.
Plot Twist: The guitar player has a severe drug problem and comes up with amazing riffs when high but pawned it off for drug money. Plot Twist part 2: The shop owner has alzheimers and this happens every weekend.
No The GUITAR was IS Billy Markham's lost a bet The Devil got his soul his bones went to God and the GUITAR MUST be played by someone that can play the HONEST BLUES Sing a sugary lie and Billy will you haunt till Y'ALL MEET IN HELL NOW GIMME DEM FUCKIN' 🎲 🎲
@Chad Spence I interpreted it to be the following: Something which you know is true because you've been there before but you forgot it. And then you experience it again, and though you don't know from where, but it's the most familiar thing you have ever experienced in your life, which makes you understand that this is true, and though you don't know where this is coming from, you know that one time you were there.
Guy Clark may be gone, but this genre of good honest, western-style storytelling is not gone. In Arizona, we have Bruce Connole, who is the ultimate Arizonacana artist. He is well worth checking out.
That man was nothing short of a genius. The greatest song ever written about an instrument, with a hint of mystery on top of it all. I play guitar, I will search the world for a case with my name on it
Where did music like this go? The passion and the emotion. Goosebumps arise to the beauty of every note. Hairs stand tall to hail every word. Amazing!
It's there I just dont understand why people say stuff like this...
The implication that you mostly listen to music that lacks emotion and feeling is very strange
You're paying too much attention to what others are enjoying I reckon
Check out the channel gemsonvhs there’s great stuff on there. Not Guy Clark good but that’s not an easy feat. Good luck I totally get where you’re coming from.
jwollheim that’s awesome. I will check it out for sure 👍🏾😎 thank you. I hope you have a wonderful day
Guy knew how to make up words that rhyme, & tell a story in 3 minutes or less. One of the best songwriters ever to grace this planet.
I agree with everything you said about Guy.Its def the gospel. But Guy didnt write this tune.Verlon Thompson wrote it.
AINT IT FUN BEING FROM TEXAS!
I got the chance to meet him once and he's as gracious and kind as you think he'd be. He even signed a pretty decent Martin I happened to bring to his show.
@@weewillie9546 they actually co-wrote it together

No matter how hard we try, we will never be able to replace Guy Clark. He is one of a kind, The Word Prophet!

My youngest son told me about this song. I have listened to it 4 or 5 times and have gotten goose bumps every time!!! Love it!
Goosebumps every time that guitar solo kicks off. RIP Guy Clark.
Why can't this be played on todays country stations. First time I heard it, I got goosebumps so bad they hurt! You don't get that with what is passing for country today.
It wasn't nothin' but the truth, so I just reared back and burned it.
One of Guy's best. Being an old picker, this touches my soul.
That last verse got me. The chills are strong with this one.
I have been a guitar picker for 40 years and I really wish I could play that style. Simply awesome
I have 3 guitars hanging on my wall one was my dad's one was my grandpa's and the third belonged to my best friends dad all are passed away...this song is awesome
This song has such a great story to it. I was driving home from work and literally pulled over to listen when it came on pandora.
When it popped up on my Pandora I had to shut er down and listen too.
It came on my local radio station as I was driving down the road and I did the same thing.
Who are the people that hit dislike on songs like this. Did they even finish listening to the story? This is amazing. Let's just see what haunts it.
I thought of it also, maybe one inspired the other. Do you know which came first? I am researching now.
Had me thinking along the lines of "The Ride" - Hank Williams tribute song.
Heard this for the first time today and have never had chills like that. From a song. Repeat for the next 3 days.
Goosebumps every single instance I listen to this great song ...
He was the Guitar...... Guy you were and still am amazing. Your music had soul and was written from the heart. R.I.P.
R. I. P. thanks for great songs
Absolutely coolest song ever...that last lyric spooked me too!
Not gonna spill it...listen to it yourself.

Heard this for the first time a few weeks ago and.....Got DAMN. So much awesome. Gave me the chills. Both the story and the music.
Sorry to see you go, Guy, but I know you'll be back eventually. I loved your songs, especially the ones on Dublin Blues and Boats to Build. But I got an immense amount of pleasure and satisfaction from this song, "The Guitar."
This would be a great movie.
I don't know how I came across this song one day but I probably listened to it at least 5 times in a row that first day. Since then it's in my regular playlist and I gotta hear it almost every day. AMAZING SONG!!!
Goosebumps, chills, hair standing. You know what I mean......no question mark.

How could anyone ever give Guy Clark a thumbs down, let alone this song!

GUY CLARK! ‘Nuff said.
Verlon Thompson who plays lead guitar here actually came up with this idea and started the song. Guy helped him finish it.
I thought there was something wrong with me. Just heard this on pandora and got chills. Came to find it on UA-cam and what do I see in the comments? People saying it caused them chills. Glad to know there are many with a soul from the unknown
Wow! Just found him tonight through a buddy. This is one of very few songs that gave me goosebumps!
An old college friend turned me on to Guy Clark. Sad he left us so young. Look for and listen to Randal Knife.R.I.P. Guy Clark.

It just occurred to me that maybe he's coming back to reclaim a guitar that he pawned in harder times.

Most amazing doing ever.
The best songs are just storys with a catchy tune
Unbelievable. Just unbelievable.
RIP guy :(
Plot Twist:
The guitar player has a severe drug problem and comes up with amazing riffs when high but pawned it off for drug money.
Plot Twist part 2:
The shop owner has alzheimers and this happens every weekend.
#2 is invalidated by him saying he's been waiting for years
I like where you're going with that.
No

Billy Markham's lost a bet The Devil got his soul his bones went to God and the GUITAR MUST be played by someone that can play the HONEST BLUES

Haha!! Brilliant.
So the old man in the pawn shop was the devil and he unknowingly sold his soul. I can't be the only one to come to this conclusion.
ryan vaughn it’s billy markhams guitar
@@blakedavis4802 Where is the source to this?
The best part of this song is I 100% believe this happened
GREAT song. Guy borrowed the chords from the 1979 Dire Straits tune Where Do You Think You're Going.
2019!
Man this is like the end of the movie "The Sixth Sense" when the ring rolls out......spooky hair raising stuff. I love it!
Guitar playing by Guy's friend Verlon Thompson, amazing guitar player. He also has a version on utube.
wonderfull!!
I love this song
Awesome!
This is the backstory for a bard/warlock multi-class
This song could be read with many layers of meaning

Awesome song. Just got that beach cowboy BS nowadays. This is real country music.
Great song
same chord progression as townes van zandt "the hole" - coincidence?
the singing too reminds of 'Mr Mudd and Mr Gold'
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
