A union pacific gp38 and sd40-2 being sent to Australia to help in coal for a while the ship they were on got caught in a terrible storm which lead the sd40-2 and gp38 to get on the island of sodor no one on the island knows the technology of 70's locomotives made by emd including the special sd40-2 electrical system they also questioned the knuckle couplers on the locomotives and their shape no one in Europe has ever used a hood unit (a locomotive with a short hood the front and the long hood the back which have windows making it easier for engineers to see both ends removing the need to a double ended cab unit used by Europeans and the fact that there are already high hods with double end controls in the cab making it controllable on both ends and on double ended control units the front of the locomotive is on the long hood not the short hood which is often referred to the nose) they try to add buffers and 3 chain couplers but they dont know how to remove the couplers cause they are built on to the frame after building an attachment which connects to the knuckle couplers which on it have the 3 chain couplers they start using their diesel fuel which works fine with the emd locomotives the engines were soon put to work and they put on a good job being able to pull up to 90 vans and wagons ( up to 60 boxcars and freight cars) it impressed many and made the big engines jealous that the emd sd40-2 and gp38 can pull more cars than them (the emd sd40-2 and gp38 were made to pull mainline over 1 mile long trains but were replaced with bigger more powerful mainline diesels like the sd60's sd70's ge dash 7's dash 8's dash 9's ac4400cw's ac6000cw's and gevos which are modern mainline locomotives with over 4400 hp) the diesels did well impressing the fat controller who sought to buy them after they were sent back to th us the dat controller contacted emd to buy 15 gp38's and sd40-2's emd had some laying around and emd got them back in running order with added buffers and 3 chain couplers emd kept them as hood units and the 16 engines were sent to sodor where they would stay forever emd also sent over 50k emd gp38 and sd40-2 engine parts and thought maintenance workers on sodor how to operate and repair them and emd sent 28 fuel tanks and over 600k gallons of diesel fuel and 11 nathan p5's and leslie rs3l's the engines got to work making up for lost time on the freight they didn't pull passenger trains and only did freight work (the gp38 and sd40-2 were meant for freight only the sd40-2p sd45p fp45's sdp4pf's gp40p's and some other emd locomotive variants with he letter p in it were meant for passenger service the sdp40f was an unsuccessful amtrak sd40-2 variant that derailed alot cause of the 3 axle trucks meant for freight and the steam heat generator in the back causing harmonic vibrations leading to passenger cars jumping the tracks) anyways if you thinks its a good fit you can add it in comicfan 1234

In summary, here's what could happen (along with stuff I think could happen)
At some point, Sir Stephen Topham Hatt retires, with his son, Richard Hatt, becoming the Fat Controller.
2012 - A crew from Nitrogen Studios arrives on Sodor to take measurements on the engines of the Skarloey Railway. This is during the development of Blue Mountain Mystery, and they wanted accurate measurements for their 3D models. However, Duncan wasn't measured as he was away at the time. At some point in this decade, Mavis celebrates her 60th year in service. Sodor celebrates the Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee.
2013 - James celebrates his 100th year in service. The Fat Controller finally purchases a saddle tank to use on the Arlesdale Branch.
2014 - Duncan expresses disgust for his portrayal in CGI, as they weren't able to take measurements due to him being away. The TV Series celebrates its 30th anniversary, and in celebration, the Skarloey Railway holds an event wherein the engines are repainted to look how they are on TV. This upsets Duncan, as he was painted yellow, but the colour eventually grows on him. Eventually, the event ends and the Skarloey engines are repainted back to their red liveries. At the same time, Toby celebrates his 100th year in service, and the North Western Railway celebrates its 100th anniversary. However, some sad news comes from the Bluebell Railway, as Stepney is withdrawn from service after his main steam pipe had failed.
2015 - This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Railway Series, and in celebration, the TV Series makes a full-length special called The Adventure Begins, which readapts the first two books of the Railway Series into CGI. An early screening is held at Tidmouth Sheds*, with both humans and engines alike watching the special; the reception was generally positive. Another event that happens is that Edward pulls a special train known as the Awdry Local. Thomas celebrates his 100th year in service, while Stepney, despite being out of commission, celebrates his 140th anniversary. The Skarloey Railway also celebrates its 150th anniversary.
(*How I would imagine that happening is that they would gather the engines outside and blow up a huge inflatable screen, and set up chairs for the human audiences to sit down in front of the engines.)
2016 - Edward celebrates his 120th year in service. The most important event of the year happens in January, where the Flying Scotsman was restored to steam after having been in the works for a decade. Gordon attends the ceremony in Manchester, and the humbly retired express engine proudly sheds a tear seeing his only surviving brother restored to steam.
2017 - Percy celebrates his 120th year in service. Sodor celebrates the Queen's Sapphire Jubilee.
2019 - Henry celebrates his 100th year in service. At some point after this year, Donald and Douglas celebrate their 120th year in service.
2020 - The COVID-19 Pandemic hits Sodor, and as such, the railway's profits take a nosedive from not being able to run very many passenger services. As such, they can't bring in as much coal. Due to this, larger engines that burn more coal, such as Gordon and Henry, are ordered to stay in the shed. Smaller tender engines such as Donald and Douglas are still allowed to operate, but most of the main line work is now being manned by smaller engines such as Thomas and Percy. In addition, the engines have to be sanitized after every run as per government regulations. The engines are getting fatigued and angry, with the big engines often being shut up for weeks at a time. This is only made worse when they hear about All Engines Go, which enrages a few of the engines. One bright thing that happens this year is the 75th anniversary of the Railway Series. In celebration, the North Western occasionally sends its famous engines down the main line to show them off to the public from a safe distance. This event is also streamed online to the rest of Britain and the world for those who are stuck at home. To try to end the year on a good note, the crewmen of the railway bring Christmas decorations into Tidmouth Sheds so that the engines can celebrate Christmas together.
2021 - The Talyllyn Railway becomes part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
2022 - As travel restrictions are lifted, a sense of normalcy has begun to return, and Gordon and Henry are finally let out of the shed. Coincidentally, Gordon is let out on his 100th birthday. Sodor celebrates the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Duncan and Peter Sam leave for the Talyllyn Railway to celebrate the Awdry Extravaganza. Visitors can pay a small fee to drive Duncan for a bit, to which he complains about "these unprofessional drivers operating me!". Peter Sam pulls a special picnic train for the event. However, some sad news comes to Sodor in September of this year, announcing that Queen Elizabeth II had passed away. Soon after, King Charles III pays a visit to Sodor on his first visit as king.
2023 - The Flying Scotsman celebrates his 100th birthday, as does Rex. Perhaps Scot goes to Sodor for a special celebration held in his honour. Meanwhile, Sodor witnesses the coronation of King Charles III, the first coronation to happen in 70 years.

    1. Sir Stephen Topham Hatt III would be about 82 years old by now. Would he still be the Fat Controller, or would he have retired and let Richard take over the role by this point?
    2. Brexit. How would that have affected the NWR as a whole?
    3. The Queen's passing would have affected the engines, I'm sure. Many of them had the chance to meet her, and probably would have been saddened to know she passed on.
    4. In the digital era, what would the engines' interactions with internet and media be like? Would the engines have their own Twitter accounts? Does the NWR host Zoom meetings or Reddit QnAs with the engines?

@@heylinspongesprite Well.... Not yet. Sir Stephen Topham Hatt retired in the 2000s and Richard Hatt becomes Sir Topham Hatt IV throughout the 2000s & present day.
Aside from that, Pip & Emma discover that their brothers & sisters have been retired between 2019-2020. Most of the Class 125s would either be scrapped or transfered to other Railways.
Since the Flying Scotsman celebrated his 100th Birthday IRL, I would think that in the Post-RWS Timeline would be different. Gordon would reuinite with his brother once more for a special event.

Brilliant video. I did imagine a similar scenario with covid affecting the railway's income, which was where one of my OCs come in and helped raised enough funds to get various NWR engines that are out of service back up and running.
As for the Awdry Extravaganza, I'm pretty sure Sir Handel was there too. He didn't get to do much unfortunately since like his twin Sir Haydn, he was having problems. But he managed to double-head trains with Peter Sam.

I think that there would be more diesel worked trains to / from the mainland with Direct Rail Services running the goods traffic. At some point since 1996 the China Clay Works closed following a landslide and was later rebuilt as a heritage centre, with Edward working tourist trains on the Brendam branch. I imagine that since STH retired (in the early 2010s) that a merger with West Coast Railways could have happened (since 2016) with Direct Rail Services working as well with their Class 37s & push pull coaches. These would run on the Brendam branch and another Class 37 would be stationed at Wellsworth as a spare / banking loco. Another InterCity 125 may have been bought or hired to run alternately with Pip & Emma while the steam engines have been relegated to a more heritage role. The WCRC Barrow - Tidmouth services would be run with Class 47s mainly with 37s and Black 5s (including Henry) putting in appearances. I wrote James, Donald & Douglas out; D & D have gone back to Scotland several times since 1998 (when DRS took over the goods trains) before a final retirement to a Scottish heritage railway at some point since 2011. James isn't may favourite character but I don't think he should be scrapped; he enjoys not pulling goods trains any more but is a bit small for the excursion traffic. He could be used as a pilot engine on the steam hauled tourist trains though in front of Henry, Gordon and the Black 5s though. I like the idea of some of the vintage engines being restored to heritage liveries for their anniversaries, while Edward (whose workload has considerably reduced since the china clay works closed) could visit the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway in Cumbria...

Other ideas for Railway series style stories either in the time given or future
1- (Kinda piggyback off someone's idea, but seemed too good not to do) With the popularity of the engines reaching a new peak as old fans keep the old style alive while adding new stuff to it, in the same vein the Hat family kept steam alive while innovating, I'd like to believe there would be a story where one of the drivers mentions their new online fame and Sir topham hat would have dedicated accounts made for the engines ran by their crews to attract more customers. For the big "accident" of the story, have maybe one of the big engines (I personally would choose James cause it'll be funny) decide to have their crew tweet out a controversial statement about railways that gets them canceled. And when I mean canceled, i mean as far as you can go in a kids book like this.
2- Basically, do the NWR1991 story about Thomas learning about the reboot. Maybe some changes to the story, but keep the overall plot.
3- Considering that they never mention this engine in the books for the time this happened, maybe have a story where Tornado visit the island. Like how willbert visited the railway. Maybe have the overall conflict be that tornado is also a pompous big engine, but rather than for any status, how about give him a hero complex where he sees himself as the new face of steam that keeps steam alive.
4- Maybe in the time frame where Duncan and Sir Handel visit the tally klin railway, their real life counterparts visit the skarloey railway to help fill in the rolls.

This was really nice! 2020 in particular you can make a whole book about. I do have some thoughts on real life history that might be able to create interesting points in timeline as well.
While I know you didn't want to talk about politics for very good reason, I'm sure brexit must have had some effect on sodor. While relatively isolated and small, it is still part of the United Kingdom.
I also wonder if older steam engines would be up to the task of pulling modern equipment and freight. Would engines be upgraded with knuckle couplings? How would they feel about that? Can some of the heavier trucks even work on sodor's main line?
I also get the feeling that during this time we might have some permanent retirements. Not just taking off important duties like Gordon but possibly reduced to static display. After all these are very old engines, and with boiler certificates expiring and parts becoming difficult to manufacture, it might be a good idea to just keep some engines on ice for a while. For some reason my head goes to Skarloey and Henry, and well Henry would definitely complain bitterly, I think Skarloey would take it in stride.
And finally, let's talk about coal. Recently there was a new initiative by the British government for cleaner environmental standards and that affected a lot of heritage railways, in particular the talyllyn, which had a whole series on UA-cam about trying to find a good replacement. Now imagine doing that for an engine meant to go down an 80 mile main line.
