I was careful to say I never did come close...but as a child I did make members of my family cry at Christmas because I played Ave Maria so nicely....got some green stuff in my hand all waddrd up and it wasn't weed...my family didn't get into that.
My Dad and I would listen to Jimmy Smith all the time. I learned so much about Jazz from my Dad. I will honor my Dad with Jimmy Smith’s amazing musicianship 🎹
Jimmy Smith, through his wonderful playing, made the Hammond a truly major voice in jazz..Those of us learning to play took what we could from his albums of the 60's..His ideas, feel & technique were fantastic.
I've carried one of those B3 bombers in and out of venues but I'm late to the Jimmy Smith train. If that wasn't the most beautiful blues intro and outro man is a showcase artist
@@mattmunroe7697 Hi Matt..Great that you gigged a real B3..takes committment to do that:-) I don't like the clones but thats what I've ended up with..Regards Ray
Hammond B3, one of the most beautiful sounds in jazz. I had the privilege to play with Lou Bennet in Jamboree, Barcelona. I'll never forget it!! Outstanding Mark Whitfield here, too.
It's fun to play with Jimmy on my smartphone. Playing along with Him is really enriching. Just feeling the vibe and what the music vocalizes. Groove on .
The tone of that organ, and the tone of the guitar, are sensational. Jimmy Smith is a genius. Back At The Chicken Shack - best album cover and best title track ever!
I grew up with B3 C3 A100...church organs. We had 4 VERY good organists in town. Those organs sounded good. But this is something else. Old David Letterman show with Paul Schaffer. He played a multimillion dollar superstock organ....its like a dragster or indy car. That sound is so warm , friendly .The attack percussive....flawless. I'm a drummer....he makes me wish
I supported jimmy in the early 90`s in the uk when he had a broken arm but still played great and he also gave a thumbs up to my playing which made me up knowing he never gave anything away - the guvnor - amazing
The Incredible Jimmy Smith in one of his best performances. Since I have discovered it in 1964, it always arouses in me the same emotion. In our parties in Florence, we used to play this music, minimizing the lights, when the bodies were starting to be tired and senses to awaken squeezing girlfriends. No voices voices, but deep sighs from time to time
A Most Moving and Groovin' Never-To-Age Blues! Uplifts One's Soul & Spirit! Being That All of Nature That I Know 'Lives/Be's Administered In Sacred Cycles, Timed and Moving! Such Is This Most Excellent Moving Groove Delivered By the 'King of the 'Never-To-Get-Old-Hammond-Organ!! Groove-On 'King' Jimmy Smith-The-Greatest! LOVE ALWAYS. ..
I discovered Jimmy listening to Radio America jazz hour from Germany for the US Army, 6:08 on my little transistor radio under the pillow, instead of sleeping for the school there was nothing like him back then . A shining star !!!
I played in bands with dual Leslies like Jimmie does here. When you hit that Tremolo, it's like a rocket takes off! Everything shakes & howls like the Devil's own noise! lol So cool! ALL three of these guys are fabulous! That beautiful Blonde fat body sounds so good in his hands! Drummer is so solid! I heard Jimmie in Seattle years ago. I say 'heard' because I was too young to get in the club. I had to stand out on the street. Great night!
When we lost Jimmy, the soul evaporated out of his Hammond. There will never be another raspy grinder of his ilk. He's up there somewhere looking down on us and laughing his ass off. Thank you Lord for sharing him with us, if only for a little while.
The name of that album, not so surprisingly, was “The Cat.” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” featured a photo of Jimmy Smith holding hands with a model wearing a wolf mask. Just Google the album titles to view the original cover art work. 😎🎹🐈⬛🎈
Started listening to Jimmy Smith in the early 60's ... my favorite instrument is Jazz Organ ... I play guitar ... Mark sounding good here too ...saw them both on stage in Indianapolis ... McGriff was there too .... miss them all Joey De, jack McDuff ... all Icons
I was fortunate enough to play with a great guitarist that was in Jimmy's performing group. He and Jimmy both lived in Sacramento, so it's not out of the ordinary to have that opportunity, since I live in Reno, a hundred or so miles West of here. When someone says they played with a star like Jimmy Smith, they very well might be telling the truth.
Ther progression of the keyboard player: Piano lessons, more piano lessons, gigging, getting better, being a master...then there's Jimmy Smith on the very apex of the pile.
Elmir, the guitarist is actually Mark Whitfield. Jimmy played a lot with Phil Upchurch, but on this session it's Whitfield. The give away, other than that fluid rapid style and guitar tucked up high like that, is Upchurch had his trademark grey hair flair at the front. Compare Mark's live stuff, a super icon in his own right, which is why he's up there with Jimmy and the boys!
I think it's great to see a younger musician enjoy playing jazz, especially when accompanying one of the world's greatest jazz-artistes, Brother Jimmy Smith, nomatter which year it happened to be. Seems to me that he was glad to be there and playing alongside Jimmy at the time ! More power to him ! I'm sure he has some interesting stories to tell his grand-children. Correct me if I'm wrong.
What a number!!! A song that reminds me of a friend called Fistos Gomba, a Jimmy Smith supporter par excellence!! Oh, thats the man with the magic fingers on the Hammond B3 organ.
Jimmy Smith, the all-time master of the Hammond organ. Don't forget too that besides finessing both manuals of the organ he also provided all his own bass lines on the pedals and he was brilliant at that too. I still get thrills listening to his walking bass on "When I Grow Too Old To Dream" from the "Back At the Chicken Shack" LP.
Two brilliant jazz musicians performing with peak artistry---(and the drummer's no slouch either!!) The only words I can think of to describe this kind of talent comes from a great philosopher who said (paraphrasing slightly)---"In the end--all things rare are for the rare."
@ghairraigh Oh, a rose by any other name . Still as sweet . I kind of recognize him but only from CD covers. Thanks for the info.I love watching the Smith videos . I only saw him once in San Fransisco about 1965.He had Billy Hart on drums ,who was very gracious to me. We both had come from playing the Washington DC.I didn't really know him but he seemed to welcome me to the jazz "Workshop"home away from home.I was playing Travis Air force Base that month .I like Whitfield ! Thanks again .
This is straight Jazz Swagg...I admire their confidence in ripping up a gig..Even Jimmy's grunts go along with the presentation..Thats what happens when u own something,,,& they owned this piece...Just Chillin',,Love it🗿
the grunting really threw me for a loop, he had a microphone, why not give some musicality with said grunts? I thought it was someone in the audience lol other than that, that is some fucking amazing skillz right there
Thats for sure IN Modesto used to play with Al Ward and the Epics at Bo Andies and this was standard song to start with!! But the best who played this were Bill Weber and Nigel Nystrom. If your still out there guys let the flavor bring you back !! Love to all from Gary
Fact:Keith Emerson was inspired to take up the Hammond organ after hearing Jimmy Smith. So incredible was this man's influence.Just imagine if he & Emerson would have done a jam together - fireworks!
You should hear the stories of Jimmy Smith when he met Keith Emerson it is hysterical. It is on a youtube interview Rick Wakeman interviews Keith and he tells it really funny stuff check it out
Kenny Burrell lights a fire that doesn't go out ,burning under and over Jimmy . Nice , eh ? Yea man , thanks for sharing the wealth, pal. We are all richer now ,just poppin' fingers with this. What a pleasure to surf and find find such a swinging ,groovy wave.
I played with Jimmy when I first arrived in LA. 1976, I was 19 and very nervous. I learned a bunch! Great memories.
Wow that's legendary!!
Thank.... don't know how it happened but I had a b3 and found out how to make registration sound similar but I loved tHE SOUND!

Thank God for Jimmy Smith, he was sent to us to bless us with the best. RIP Jimmy.
Doesn't get better than this...a masterclass in rhythm, groove, and soloing...
Oh man...my father got me into Jimmy Smith's music and I've been in love ever since! May both their souls rest in peace.
Hammond B3, one of the most beautiful sounds in jazz. I had the privilege to play with Lou Bennet in Jamboree, Barcelona. I'll never forget it!! Outstanding Mark Whitfield here, too.
Especially when played through a Leslie speaker!
3 people Don't know what time it is...
It's Blues time.... Jimmy Style.
Man @ 6.00 he is just killing it. R.I.P Jimmy.
It's fun to play with Jimmy on my smartphone. Playing along with Him is really enriching. Just feeling the vibe and what the music vocalizes. Groove on .
That Jazz guitarist is fighting, shouting, throwing, giving etc... Wow I love it!!
He single handedly destroyed jimmy
Well, it is George Benson, so... :-)
Love Jimmy Smith. And so refreshing to hear a clean guitar
Listen to some of Jimmy's recordings with Kenny Burrell.
@gregbelcamino7239
Here Here! Burrell was fantastic
Blimey. This is otherworldly. This should be broadcast into outer space.
Jimmy is missed and will never be duplicated.
Never duplicated indeed...but Cory Henry ain't shabby either. ;)
