He lucked out on the role of a lifetime. He has some of the best job security in the entire industry because there will ALWAYS be Scooby-Doo media for him to voice.
Even Matthew admits it, he said himself he probably would've quit acting entirely if not for this movie.

They were forced to endure Scrappy-Doo specifically if they wanted to watch new Scooby-Doo. That was the problem. The character was WAY overexposed, to the point he had his own episodes with Scooby-Dum and some lame Shaggy wannabe with a cowboy hat and glasses, iirc. I actually didn’t mind reruns with Scrappy as a kid, but as an adult, I can totally see why people hated him back in the day.

@@BareBandSubscriptionI grew up back then, Scrappy was popular. The show did get back on track when Daphne reappeared and they eventually had episodes that included Velma and Fred, proving they didnt disappear altogether. And I say again, there were *plenty* other options. And as Martin mentioned in the video, Scrappy begat Scrappy-like characters in most of the cartoons of the time so even not watching Scooby Doo, they'd be screwed. Scooby Doo was popular but it wasnt nearly what it is today. Scrappy was brought on because the Scooby series had run its course.
Also, the character you described was Scooby's brother Yabba Doo, not his cousin Scooby Dum.

Yeah I grew up with this, yeah not everything held up 20 years after its release, there are cringe parts. And yet, I consider this and the sequel (which I felt was better than the first, mostly because that felt like the cartoon) to be major, MAJOR guilty pleasures. And yeah, my crush on Linda Cardellini also came from this.
Fun fact: The Jim Henson Creature Shop built a puppet of him for the movie before they replaced it with CGI. Which if they decided to go with that but mix it with the CG Scooby, it would've been similar to another movie the Creature Shop helped work on called Jack Frost, where they made a puppet snowman but has moments with a CGI snowman.
Also, look up the concept art for this movie, Scooby would've looked a WHOLE LOT WORSE than the final movie, where they stuck a bit TOO close to his cartoon counterpart
