- In Episode 113 we visit Walter and his Numbers Matching 1979 Solar Gold Pontiac Trans Am with the 400 T/A Pontiac engine!
After purchasing his T/A Walter has been in the process of reviving the car while still keeping it in it’s original form! From the original paint to the original radio… You are going to love what Walter has been doing to this classic American muscle car.
In this episode we are joined by Pontiac expert Ron Browne. Ron and his crew were featured in Episode 1 and 87 of Cars, Shops & Collections. It’s in episode 87 that we first see Walter’s Trans Am back when Ron was in the midst of rebuilding the 400 T/A Engine!
In this episode we do a full bumper to bumper breakdown of the Solar Gold Trans Am. We get another glimpse at Ron’s 1973 T/A… and we end Walter taking us on a head turning ride along!
A HUGE thank you to Walter & Ron for taking the time showcase this 1979 Pontiac Trans Am.

I got an original 81 Turbo Trans Am with the Window Sticker, on my channel.. GREAT VIDEO AGAIN MAN.
G'day JC, like everyone else after watching Smokey and the Bandit at my local drive-in as a young fella I was hooked on the Firebirds. I love the originality of this gold TRANS AM. This is another great CS&C episode. Ps! I make my own version of the Diablo sandwich, and it's awesome I must say! 😁
I'll take a couple of your stickers, if you don't mind sending them Down Under.
😎👍
An Australian Diablo Sandwich sounds intense! Send me your address so we can send you some gear! CarsShopsAndCollections@gmail.com
@@CarsShopsAndCollections G'day JC, will do. Cheers mate. 🤠👍
L78 400 ci was underrated hp engine had smaller chamber heads /higher compression / carb work jetting / cam was slightly different they more closer 300 hp 360 ft lb with t 10 super duty 4spd / and 342 safttrack posi was a 14 sec 1/4 car with some bolt on could be into 13s
I have the California version 403 Olds TH350 had it since 1997 guy was in a bind got it for $2,000, speedometer only goes to 100 mph, someone modified the speedo gears so only show half actual speed so 30 mph is really 60, it has the 2.41 posi with the 60 series tires by theoretical calculations 5500 rpm is 183 mph needless to say I have never held it to the floor to see but have been up there above 150 a few times drives like a dream. If I stay out of it it will get 20 mpg.
Sounds incredible! And above 150… impressive! I appreciate you watching the episode!
Solar Gold code 50 debuted in 1978, not 1977. There was no "Gold Edition" in 1979, only 1978 and it was a Y88.
Thanks for the info!!
There are three mandatory options for a ‘79 T/A, W72 Package, WS6 Package, and T-Tops. That ‘73 is to drool over but a Solar Gold hardtop with body side moldings even with hobnail seats certainly doesn’t deserve all the drama expressed.
@@MarkRoberts-bj2me It's a nice car, but I don't buy anything that's not a limited edition or rare. I don't consider 403 cars, they are parts cars to me. Nothing wrong with an Oldsmobile engine, but they never belong in a Pontiac. It has to be a Y84 400/4 speed and not just any one. I want one with every option. I have a 10th Anniversary 400/4 speed and that's the next rarest beside the 1979 Y84/W72.
Did I see *this solar gold T/A* today (May 19) driving through Rancho Santa Fe around 3 pm?
just realized you guys are in Vegas... anyway, you have a solar gold twin living in the San Diego area. Can't remember the last time I saw a solar gold. Very cool.
That’s funny you saw one! This is the only one I have seen in Las Vegas!
Hey JC nice show like always

@@CarsShopsAndCollections Thanks for your quick response 🤘🏼🐼
Trek > Wars
If I had been born a few years earlier, I probably would have been a bigger fan of Star Trek. 😂😂😂 I will say that the Star Trek Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton back in the early 2000's was AWESOME! I went on that quite a few times.
Yes! That Star Trek experience was epic! And I have a blast covering the Star Trek convention that comes to Vegas every summer.
As a MOPAR guy, I contend that Pontiac was way better than Chevy as far as styling goes and was the king of GM. Getting rid of Pontiac was a travesty. I heard it's coming back.
Yes they are! It was in Car and Driver magazine!
@@michaelm3381 They'll be all EVs, but hey! 😉
@@zach_diecast_mansur possibly, but I suppose it's better than nothing.
@@michaelm3381 I'd have to disagree
@@michaelm3381 Speculation at best, and depending on what you read, GM said that was a C&D stunt.
Square headlight firebirds were fugly
Not everyone's taste, but 1979 was the best-selling year of the Trans Am, so they did something right.
@@googleusergp competition was nonexistent in 79. The even uglier mustang and the gutless corvette sure weren’t. The Z-28 sold about 1/3 as many as TA’s, though better styled.
@@GregZentTrumpetMan Not really correct. All of the cars were competition as was the Nissan Z, Toyota Supra and some German competitors. Either way, consumers had a choice and they chose the Firebird----to the tune of over 200,000 of them, half of which were Trans Ams. All of that during a recession and double digit inflation. Every one was likely sold at MSRP or higher.
My 10th Anniversary 400/4 speed was sold for $13K+ as a leftover in late 1979 and that didn't include the $500 "motivation" that the original owner gave the salesman to get a 400/4 speed car over a 403 Olds car.
I owned a 74 firebird all I can say is underpowered and rode like a trash truck ,I’m just keeping it real .
