I've been teaching Pre-primary in Australia for 10 years (that's equivalent to Kindergarten in USA). Your lessons are amazing for writing! I even get a lot out of watching your lessons.
Class assignment here Strengths Did a lesson based on yesterday’s reading Nice tone of voice Used sight words Had everyone participate in the counting of words in the sentence Repeated herself multiple time to help the students understand Had students write in words to keep them engaged Asked the students to help with spelling and connected letters in the words to letters in their names Weaknesses Could have had students share more in partners so everyone got to share what they were thinking I feel as she could have been a little more organized and not so cluttered Makes me wonder why she signaled Logan out. I wonder if Logan had trouble on this before and she kind of called her out Asking students to spell something she would point out the word in the classroom instead of spelling from memory
I feel like for whole group instruction she did well too. I wonder if they had turn and talks (think pair share) during the read aloud portion (which we didn't get to see). They probably discussed more when they met together. I wondered about Logan too. Because, she said, "Where's my friend Logan?" I thought it was because she knew Logan had mastered the spelling of the word 'they' due to Logan almost completely spelling the word (the-). The teacher appeared as though she was modeling a lesson for a group of teachers to observe (at least that's what I gathered towards the end of the video) so, I'm not entirely sure if this is her actual classroom. I also wonder how big is this classroom. I teach 31 first graders (no TA!) in a classroom the size of a two car garage and I have acquired 9 years worth of instructional materials. So, my classroom is completely cluttered. The children looked so excited to work with her and they looked like they felt good about their self-efficacy during their time with this teacher. Finally, I liked how she summed up their learning at the end of the lesson.
I love this video I used it for an assignment in school! Question: The children that you are choosing from the paper, are they being chosen specifically for that task or because you just want to make sure everyone is getting a turn to write?
Thank you very much for this lesson. I think I will implment this at school too. I really like your sight word crossword. Do you have a lesson on introducing wow pictures? I learned so much. Thank you.
Courtney, I will be training teachers in Kenya on how to support their fellow teachers using a CALTPE format that we use at SJSU where I teach. I would like to use your video for the teachers to practice making comments for a teacher. Is your video copyrighted? Would you give permission for this use?
Best writing lesson I've seen in more than 30 years. You rock Courtney Chan, it is not easy keeping all children engaged like this. EXCELLENT!
Awww, that’s so nice Cheryl! Engagement is the key right!?! Love teaching kids!!!!

Congratulations.
All teachers have my complete and honest admiration.
Tons of work, material elaboration, long etc. + ridiculous payment in return.
I LOVE your classes and the strategies you use! The only person who I get excited about teaching when I look at 💫👏💕
Thank you so much, Sara!!! I love teaching students!!!!

This is a snapshot of a lesson. You're making a lot of assumptions here.
Are they really kindergarten kids?!How can they sit so still and focused? Amazing
I love ❤️❤️ when they teach critical thinking 💭🤔 skills 😉.
