The spare piston by the side of the engine is a nice touch.
nice to see one of these engines running at the speed they were meant to run at and not just barely chugging along! great job to all involved!
michael king what cooling does it use I don’t c a radiator
@@wesleyagrela6449 Water.
@@wesleyagrela6449 The massive thermal mass means there is no need to cooling like in a car.
@@millomweb The 4-cyl that used to be in the feed mill down the road here, had what they called a water-tower for cooling. Center Valley, Town of Center, Outagamie County, WI. Wonder if it still exists?
@@thermionicemission6355,
Really? That’s pretty neat.
Awesome video! I am happy to see an old workhorse like this restored to running condition instead of rusting away in some scrapyard.
Loud as it may be, I could probably fall asleep listening to that.
Nice to see Harley-Davidson have developed a lightweight engine at last!
Ooof
Oof
Ride a bicycle Nancy if you don’t like harleys
Ya can't even compare the two, at least the F-M can hold together after 100 years and not leak oil😁
HD... FM... either way it's made in Wisconsin
I'm former EN1 us navy and was specialized in the Fairbanks Prime Movers. This is a testimony to F & M 2 stroke/cycle diesels and the simplicity of that type to run and maintain.
What brand of 2 stroke oil does she run? TCW3. I’m running 6 gallons of BRP XD-100 on my 8v92 turbo 2 stroke with garret turbo. She’s smoother with a bit more power. This big 2 stroke shown here is oil injected somehow.
AND you guys are young!
Thank you and bring your children to teach them the hows and whys.
: - )
I used to work on and run these. There are still several in use across Nebraska in old generation plants. Easy to fire up and throw load out on the line. Thx for the memories.
Do these run TCW3 2 stroke synthetic? What brand of 2 stroke oil do you run. I got my 8v82 2 stroke turbo to work on BRP XD -100 etec oil 6 gallons. I let’s done off tge gear VRO pump in a blending valve to the fuel line. Then add more in works great and she runs soother with a bit more power. Imagine an OP 2 stroke alcohol ethanol OP with oil injection like tge rotax 850 etec turbo skidoo new sleds. An OP 1700 made from 2 850’s lay down in the sled.
Great video! In FL, at Koreshan State Park, the have a 1925 Fairbanks Morse that ran off and on from 1926 to about 1946 or 47. One like it powered a Westinghouse generator for a utopian society that lived there before it became a park. The one they restored is the same as the one that used to be there and came from a creamery. The local single throw guys restored it and run it every Saturday. I hope I have this story correct. These are wonderful to see!
Even after so many years of been built it runs like new, so smooth for an engine of his age, seems that it had an outstanding maintenance very well taking care of it.
Awesome. I went to school for, and worked on, the FM 38D 8 1/8 OP engines in the Navy.
One hell of an engine.
Sir would you have any books on them? I'm president of a museum that has one and we are trying to restore it but are coming up short.
Now I would love to make a skidoo rotax 1700 OP 2 stroke made from 2 850 etec engines. Kay it in tge sled with silver turbo. Same with a Polaris. Tge 38 8 1/8 is oil injected somehow and I wonder how they would run on synthetic 2 stroke oil. I run 6 gallons of BRP XD-100 etec oil in my 8v92 2 stroke and Iet some off the gear VRO pump to blend with tge fuel with a mixing valve. I did some amsoil interceptor 2 stroke oil. She runs smoother with a bit more power now. A alcohol FB OP with castor 827 maxima 2 stroke oil would be something. The OP 2 stroke in snowmobiles would be insane. A 1700 Polaris OP patriot for 2 850’s in turbo new khaos sled.
Nobody will want to watch a solar panel turn on after 14 years.
Or a Prius.
Hydro, nuclear plants and perhaps certain turbines are cool though. I imagine thermoelectric plants have a decent mode of operation
Sure would love to hear it under load!
Listen to that engine sing and look at the Piston lying down! Kudos gentlemen for getting that monster going without an owner's manual!! I can see you machined some parts.
Where is the 2 stroke oil injection tank. There must be a lot of 2 stroke oil around somewhere
Great big "attaboy" for all concerned! A magic moment for sure!
These Fairbanks Morse Engines have such a wonderfully catchy sound!
Music to my ears. Fairbanks Morse engines had a really great smooth rumble.
Give that poor engine something to do! It yearns for real work. It sounds like you fixed it up 100%!
Without looking at the picture, it sounds like a big diesel locomotive idling.
Great work guys ! Very impressive
Very durable, smooth runming engines. Extremelyn reliable.
Such an awesome sound!
congratulations keep up the good work.
Great sound!!
Saw similar unit at the motor transport Museum in Campo, San Diego County but not running. They said it was an old backup generator came out of a hospital. an impressive piece of machinery!
Very cool! Nice work all.
Very nice
Love fairbanks morse engines
How about a 1700 OP 2 stroke Polaris made from 2 850 patriots with silber turbo. Niw lay that down in the 2023 khaos,
Hopefully you have some plans to get the alternator working?
Every man there had instant wood!
Woman like these 2 stroke too. My GF is a 2 stroke aholic like me.
WONDERFUL! GREAT! YAAY!!!
I used to have to rebuild a Buda engine this size every two years. It was a 6 cylinder with three split heads. The oil pan/base was big enough for a party of 4 to use as a hot tub. They tried to unload it with a hoist from a semi wrecker and it just folded the boom. Silicone seal was just coming into use. and having used it on other rebuilds I knew what great stuff it was. I just finished the engine and the customer came in who was an old guy. He immediately wanted to know what the blue shit was. I explained what great stuff it was and how oil leaks disappeared with it. He got mad as hell and demanded I tear the engine down and redo it with shellac. It was a one man job to rebuild this thing (me) and I will never forget what this guy did. For me it was the engine from hell.
Shellac?
@@flyingmerkel6 basically varnish
@@enja001 Doesn't sound effective. Mechanics can be creatures of habit.
@@flyingmerkel6 its surprisingly good considering it was made of crushed bugs
The ground literally shakes
То что делалось на века.
Слава ИНЖЕНЕРАМ с большой буквы, все это придумавшим. Без этих дизелей человек не покорил бы космос...
Also...cool to see a video with a younger guy like me doing this sort of thing.
very impressive
Awesome! Looks like you need new glass over the one side of the oiler
It was broken in a few pieces, but a couple applications of superglue straightened it out!
Is that where the 2 stroke oil goes. Is that synthetic 2 stroke oil in there?
It's great to see it running, but I can't help but think it would look nicer with a nice new paint job.
fantastic!!
What a beast ! The Woo Hoo says it all.
Esse motor é uma lenda.
Did you have to do a total rebuild on this?
AWESOME 😎
How do I purchase one like this?
I'm going to guess I'll have to just look all over the place, are there any states that seem more likely to have FM Engines?
Places with navy yards, check DRMO or look up the 38:8&1/8 on eBay maybe.
@@horseblinderson4747,
I live in Ohio though
So, what's it for ? I note the generator on the end - but then there's a pulley - old mill engine ?
The pulley ran a DC generator to “excite” the main alternator.
@@allenalonzo9245 That's a big pulley for that purpose and in any case, exciters are commonly on the same shaft and not that big and usually once the main generator's providing power, the separate exciter's not necessary. Perhaps FM designed things differently !
@@millomweb contrary to what everyone says these are minimalist engineered engines. They simply built them bigger than they had to and in the easiest way they could.
Raw mass high torque and low rpms are where the magic is actually taking place.
I would love to put that engine in a big boat it sounds great
What 2 stroke oil would you run? I would go with castor 927 maxima or amsoil interceptor. I got my 8v92 2 stroke turbo on 6 gallons of BRP XD-100 etec oil I get at Walmart
I use BRP XD -100 etec oil 6 gallons in my 8v92 2 stroke turbo.I let some off the gear VRO pump and mixing with fuel and dump in more XD-100 as she burn it. She run smoother with a bit more power now. I get tge XD -100 at Walmart.
What fuel types can it use?
Also, how’s the maintenance?
Methanol/ethanol/propanol and lots of castor 927 maxima 2 stroke oil.
It’s oil injected obviously
These Engines are built for many different fuels, but once set up that is what it has to run on, Most applications run #2 Diesel fuel.
Around 5:00, I can almost smell that through the video.
All that amsoil interceptor 2 stroke oil. Niw let’s run ethanol and turbo it
Where did it come from, what was it powering?
It came from New Britain Ct where it was in service until late 90s as a back up generator for their water plant.
It comes on the 2023 Polaris patriot turbo khaos snowmobile. Reserve yours at your local Polaris dealer today!
👍👍👍
Imagine one of these with a turbocharger, it would sound like a GIANT Alco!
Yes a turboed 2 stroke alcohol Fairbanks Morse
What sort of displacement would these engines be?
Alex Hickey 14 inch bore and 17 inch stroke. Just over 2615 cubic inches per cylinder!
@@6h471 thanks bud
All of it.
@@derpydog1008 😂😂😂
Wow bring this thing to PSI genesis for a full porting snowmobile porting job
Wait is that one 4 stroke?
2 stroke
Stay away from that flywheel 🥴
And their first inline four.
Grab that flywheel and see if you can stop it 😏
If that flywheel came off it'd go around the world 7 times before it stopped!
what is it, where is it, what's it do ??
The engine is in its new permanent home at the Zagray Farm Museum in Colchester Ct. Three weekends a year we open our doors to show off our collections of all things mechanical as well as a giant mechanical themed flea market. This engine generated backup power for the New Britain CT. Water company up until the late 90s. It was offered to us and some forward thinking members rescued it and dedicated hundreds of hours to build a building around it and restore it. Check out the engine being set into place on this channel! The Northwest 80D used is one of 4 we have working at the farm.
Very old engine !
Looks like an earthquake
Narration would be nice
Nah, the noise is better
A harly with a online four i dömt belive you.
Harley v-twins can be and have been converted to 2 strokes.lots of room on those jugs to cut ports into it.
