I sweep a Magic the Gathering Online Vintage league, collecting a 5-0 trophy with Atraxa Oath, a deck from Patreon subscriber Jon. I've played this deck a lot, including to a top 8 at Eternal Weekend, and all of my competitive losses over the last 6 months have been to Jewel Shops. So why not put a Null Rod in the main deck to close that one gap? With many tutors to find it and no important artifacts of your own, it's a low cost way to hobble a difficult matchup. Oath of Druids, Show and Tell, Flash, put Atraxa into play, Oko is the backup plan. What's not to love? Take the Null Oath! MTG

I was Op last round. had 2 flusters in hand and looking back i was supposed to burn one to force the crack of lotus to pay for it or use FON. Ive had a tough time against this deck in general. GGs.

It's wild to me that you can have a format where decks are full of one-ofs and ultra-busted high variance cards like Black Lotus, and yet a deck + player pairing can be so consistent that Bosh rattles off a 5-0 trophy league basically every time he plays Oath on the channel.
The thing about ultra busted high variances is high power can and will be used to sprint in the a losing direction quicker then lower power and simpler formats, and when you have huge variance in gamestates skill matters a lot in identifying and navigating gamestates
I am happy that the Legacy mill deck sucked out the bads. 😂

While preparing my vintage cube for Friday I realized I'm missing my Oath
Why do so many Vintage players say Jewel is a fundamentally bad deck? Is it just too high variance, unreliable? Too much of a glass cannon with a low blue count?
Yea, if I had to guess I'd say it's the nondeterminism, but I'm not sure. Partially commenting to see if someone with actual reps answers.
Like, maybe it's just because it gets hit by all the artifact hate already present, while also not being deterministic, and not having much of a side plan?
it's extremely fragile - it 100% folds to null rod and similar hate, and basically only has force to stop that hate from resolving. plus, its not very disruptive - basically just force, one trinisphere, and maybe karn (depending on the matchup) to try and stop your opponent's game plan
Glass cannon with low blue count is it. It’s like 1 step above Belcher/Oops All Spells in that it has a little interactivity and staying power but is mostly just jamming and hoping regardless of what your opponent does or has.
@jacefairis1289 I'm curious then why it's popular in the format. What about the deck justifies it's play given its litany of issues

You should try to slip in 2 gaeas blessing it draws card and recycle ♻️ during oath and you are mill proof
that was a tech piece that most top level players have cut because atraxa is good enough to end the game on its own. you dont need to recycle cards when you just have a 7:7 in play and win in 3 turns with force backup

Has anyone that you know of tried a surveil land in vintage yet? Seems like it would've been good in the last round when you fetched to thin but maybe that doesn't come up enough?
That comes up so rarely in a format that plays 11-14 lands in the average deck. Might be fine in something slower, but I have a hard time imagining that being worth the squeeze in this format.
Makes sense, a tapped land is a pretty huge cost in a format this fast.

Portal seems so mid. Is it just for init? I’ve done most of my vintage gaming locally and online so I don’t face initiative much, but I realize it gets represented pretty well in paper.
It solos Initiative, which is a matchup you can’t Citadel and Sphinx sucks.
might come up later on but grafdigger's cage doesn't actually stop tinker at all, unless of course you're finding a creature from it. It only cares about creatures entering from library not artifacts so Bolas's Citadel is fine but Sphinx is not

Sure you can get Citadel, but you can’t cast any spells with it.
Vintage is such a weird format to me. On one hand it absolutely slams combos and fast af win attempts, and on the other it can slow games to a crawl and anctually play slow in spite of the insanity allowed. It is just crazy to think that control decks can and will be top of meta with the busto cards available to the format. You can literally play anything, and that leads to some absurd wins, but somehow there are still decks that can win with small mid creature beatdown and just stopping the opponent.
Typical Vintage Game, version 1: Player A makes his move, Player B Forces the critical card, but Player A Forces back. The critical card resolves and the game is functionally over.
Typical Vintage Game, version 2: Player A stops Player B from resolving a spell. Player B answers Player A's threat. A topdecked bomb is Forced. The players have run out of gas and the next several turns is a slap fight between a couple of 2/2 creatures.
Wizards bans cards whenever the insane combo decks get a little too strong. They also ban cads when the turn 1 lock decks start getting too strong, so that there's always that bit of variety and play in the format that keeps it interesting.

It was a misclick based on the way Atraxa piles are displayed on mtgo. I even counted Oko as a green card out loud when deciding if I want Atraxa. Shit happens. 🤷🏻♂️
