  • El Mirage Dry Lake, or the “El Mirage Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Area,” is a 6-mile long dry lake bed located in the Mojave Desert on the western edge of San Bernardino County. It offers a myriad of off-highway recreational activities from dirt biking, automobile racing, and gyrocopter and ultralight aircraft operation. If you’re like me and own none of the above, well, make do with what you got! I spent the day exploring El Mirage in my 2013 Ford Escape and it made for a rather enjoyable morning!
Before you head out to El Mirage, you should know that the area is under the official jurisdiction of the United States Bureau of Land Management and there are a few rules you should be aware of. A permit is required to access the lake bed, but the prices are very reasonable. $15 for a day use pass, $30 for a week, and $90 for an entire season. For more information, head over to www.blm.gov/vi....

You can easily get directions by typing "El Mirage Dry Lake" into Google Maps, or by plugging in these coordinates: 34.657677, -117.599042. If you’ve been to El Mirage or if you have recommendations for other cool off-highway recreational vehicle spots, let us know!

I used to live right next to el mirage. My friend wanted to drive his Subaru on El Mirage, so we went down there, and he ended up going about 140 MPH on that road, I didnt shit my pants, I shit the seat in his car.

Joel Barcenas if I remember, there’s an office building at the check in gate, but not sure if there’s a public restroom.

Rode there from the 70s-90s My modded CR500 was the funnest. Lucky to have lived/rode in the 2-stroke era.
There was never a fee you just drove in and the rangers had just started checking for spark arrestors back then.

Theres some small ones for ATV's out by the Renyold's Creek Watershed south of Murphy, ID. There seems to be some cool trails, but I didn't dare take my 2WD Ford Focus out on those roads!

haha, i love it! And know that feeling, 4 cylinder hatch here with an engine that was noted as hopelessly wheezy 10 years ago.

Discovered el mirage? Do you live in a shoe box? People have been recreating there for many decades, including me. Pay $15 to the government to visit? Are you insane? Lame video
