👘 Not sure who these MISA, Akane and Kanami people you're talking about are. : )
This song features Hatoko (rhythm guitar/vocals), Fujiki (lead vocals), Kanoemi (lead guitar), Umemisa (bass) and Akatsuki (on drums).
Although she is from Kumamoto, Hatoko is very fond of Kyoto and visits it whenever she can.
This song is essentially a love letter to that historic part of Japan.

It is actually a scathing indictment of Gion-cho. A conservative place that hates everyone who is not from there. You take the song at face value when it is certainly not meant to be taken that way. The old guard in Gion-cho, a historic center for prostitution, hates all foreigners big time. And a foreigner is ANYONE including all Japanese who are not originally from there. The song is a hard knock on the place and its hypocrisy as only Miku can deliver.

@@sacluvsBM True about the history, but not what it is today. From what I have looked up, it is a dying tradition that I hope does not die. You need to look up Maiko and watch the Videos on YT. As far as this song, I can't get enough of it.

No matter how many amazing Japanese bands come along, Band-Maid (band-maiko) keeps intriguing me in a way no other bands do.

Only one word can be used to describe this song: masterpiece! My favorite Maiko song and only topped by Sayonakidori for me! As a bass player I just have no words for MISA in this song... I have no explanation except she is from another galaxy 😀Her tone, the bass lines she plays without being distractive or feeling "off" of everything else is just mind blowing and an inspiration for me!

Moreover Saiki is singing in Kyoto dialect used in the region which isn’t standard Japanese. That adds the local flavor to the song with all those visual images in the video. That’s so unusual and makes this song interesting and also tricky for Japanese. Normally lyrics are written in standard Japanese so that everyone in Japan can understand and share. Great reaction🤘

  • @htusda1

I love your reaction! Since you are with Gaijin Guys (and are interested in Japanese...) the correct pronunciation for the "Gi" in "Gion" is more like the "gee" in "geek" so Gion would be like "Geeon" rhyming with "Leon". Not a complaint! Gion is the name of a district in Kyoto. I believe the video was taken in Kyoto. .. and "oido" is a Kyoto dialect for rear-end, so not many in Tokyo would understand... haha.

Wave, I love you very much, I love the way you break down Band-Maid songs BUT. By splitting the song down into sections/riffs/drum patterns sometimes you miss 'the whole being' of a song. Gion-Cho is like that. It makes me cry. It's melancholy. The lyrics are meaningful. It's about an ex Maiko (trainee Geisha) yearning for her life as a Maiko and missing Kyoto. And yes the "raise your butt up" is part of Maiko training in real life.
Gion-Cho is the only Band-Maiko original (not a Band-Maid cover). You will never hear it live, unless you attend a serving in Kyoto. That's the only place they have ever played it. Of course it is sang in Kyoto dialect too, not traditional Japanese, which adds to the effect.
it's one of the best Band-Maid tracks ever written in my opinion.

More background... Gion is the nightlife area in Kyoto (others have explained the pronunciation - Gi-on - where Gi is like the Ki in Saiki but with a hard G). It has a lot of LIVE music (Live House) venues and is considered a "playground" of sorts (you can move from venue to venue until the sun comes up - I have done, and still do). It is also considered to be the centre of long-standing culture in Japan (hence the traditional kimono and the term "Maiko"). The lyrics of Gion-cho reflect all of this.

About four years ago I stumbled across The Hu, a Mongolian Folk-Metal Band. It simply blew my mind that these Mongolians were combining the folk music of their culture with Western style Metal and totally rocking it! I thought it was awesome!
But within the last year I discovered Band-Maid, a Japanese Rock quintet, who have raised rock music to a new level for me. Then I find out that for April Fools Day they transformed themselves into Band-Maiko and are performing Japanese Folk-Metal. Along with incorporating trad Enka instrumentation and Kyoto dialect lyrics, the videos depict the traditional Geisha fashions while playfully injecting Easter Eggs that will delight the Maidiacs.

If you want to dive deeper into the lyrics you should ask someone from Kyoto or someone who's very familiar with the accent to translate them with cultural references included. The subtitles in the video are pretty literal and without cultural context, which means a lot gets lost in translation. Kyoto dialect is pretty unique and Geiko's even have their own twist to make it sound more polite and "welcoming". There's no way to translate and give the lyrics justice with a standard Japanese interpretation, which is what they did here.

  • @zer0tzer0

Japanese don't pronounce Gs as Js. If it's to be pronounced as a J it's spelled in the Romanji as J. So it's Gee-On Cho. Not Jee-On Cho. And yeah, that MISA bass slide was over two stings. very impressive! Even if that was faked, and I don't think it was, just faking that would be impressive. But since it's mimed for the MV no way to know. But pretty sure it wasn't, since she even knew to do that, and not of a fretless bass either. Wow! But I never noticed Kanami's slap before. thanks for that observation. Another thing I hadn't noticed is when Miku is singing her part towards the end it's panning in the stereo image. Listen closely, under Saiki's part. It's almost like Miku is answering herself in a canyon. Beautiful! LOL! Right after I wrote this, you mentioned it when you went back to discuss those other parts. Classic! It just knocks me out me that they're music is so dense and fully packed, yet sparse enough for all those things to work together and not step on each other. Amazing!

14:56 I had no idea that Francisco Franco, Caudillo de España por la g. de Dios, would be a fan of Band Maiko.

It looks beautiful, sounds better but at what sacrifice. These kimonos, if authentic weigh around 20 kilos (44 lbs) and restrict movement considerably. These were long shoots and I understand that the ladies were almost exhausted at the end. There is no way they could perform live in kimonos. I believe the lyrics were translated into the Kyoto dialect. In all a great achievement that only Band Maid could even consider it.

A lot of the BAND-MAIKO songs? There are only two. But the lyrics are about Kyoto and Geisha and Maiko culture.

Actually there are 7, but only one is a Maiko original, the other 6 are BAND-MAID covers done Maiko style.

Rather than, “raise your butt up,” a better translation might be, “get up off your ass.”
You didn’t mention anything about the visual design of the video. Their kimono are spectacularly beautiful. At the tea ceremony, we see AKANE slurping noodles as the other Maids are raising their cups to drink.😂

The translation might not be that accurate. The words are in a stilted 19th century Kyoto dialect that only Maiko use (and have to learn to become Geiko). There are a lot of assumptions and misunderstandings in the comments about the meaning of the lyrics which are almost certainly not correct. It would be nice if they could redo them. It might help us gaijin understand them better.

Gion-cho is the only song written exclusively for Band-Maiko. And it is the story of a young lady who goes out into the world to make her way and fails. This forces her to return home and become a prostitute in order to raise funds to go back out into the world to try again. As always with Band-Maid and Miku's lyrics things are not what they seem. Gion-cho is a very conservative area of Kyoto where the folks hate foreigners and a foreigner is ANYONE who is not from Gion-cho even other Japanese. It was also historically a place where brothels predominated. A tatami is a bedroll which in the 1890's was a sign of wealth. Poor people slept on the floor or ground. Miku writes this is your life. Raise your ass up. And thank you please come again. At the start when an inquiry is made concerning cherry blossoms it is a reference most westerners should be familiar with. When we refer to something being cherry we are referring to it being new and fresh. Think of the phrase pop the cherry which refers to going to bed with a virgin. At the very start Sai-chan sings about a red light and red light means the same just about everywhere in the world ie the red light district. The song speaks to the desires of a young lady who will do anything to be a success in this world. Sound just a little like Miku and her drive and desire? Sure does. The song is a masterpiece and the cinematography is outstanding. Lyrics in Band-Maid songs are so important l wish more would pay attention to them. Regards.

Oh and Maikos are Geishas in training. This song is basically instructions to Maikos. Raise your butt refers to the posture they are required to maintain (It is NOT SEXUAL)
