Just read The Blade Itself for the first time and really enjoyed it! Currently reading Before They Are Hanged and liking it even more. Glokta is such a fascinating character but honestly all of the characters are incredible to read.
It's interesting to hear your change in opinion of Orbital. I'm still excited to read it, though. Thank you for another year of great book videos, and happy new year!
Happy New Year! 🎉 I really need to read more Joe Abercrombie, I loved the First Law books so much! For Christmas I got -Christmas and Other Horrors (not always a fan of shorter fiction but really enjoying some of these) -The Once and Future Witches -Blood Over Bright Haven -Faebound (Those last two i asked for thanks to your reviews - can't wait to read them!)
Got a few shelf trophies for Christmas (hardcover copies of books I read as ebooks and loved): Legends & Lattes Bookshops & Bonedust The Darkness Outside Us A Little Life Working on a library of physical copies of books I love, and this Christmas added to it. Happy New Year!
“Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries” by Heather Fawcett. I got this book for Christmas and I blazed through it in three days! It’s my favorite book that I read in 2024: fascinating characters, icy landscapes, academia in which humour abounds *and* in which folklore is treated seriously, and a perfectly grumpy romance. 10/10 - highly recommend! And happy new year! ❤
I know what you mean by describing feeling like a kid again. I've been leaning into genre fiction lately after a long absence and it feels so comforting, even when the content is dark and challenging. I'm currently reading Kazuo Ishiguro's The Buried Giant, which I had been putting off, and recently finished The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August, which I adored and read in basically two sessions across two days, and just picked up my library hold copy of Best Served Cold!
I got an omnibus of Daphne Du Maurier's Cornish novels (Jamaica Inn, Rebecca, Frenchman's Creek, and My Cousin Rachel), Metal from Heaven by August Clarke, Compound Fracture by Andrew Joseph White, and a couple of new reprints of Robert Bloch's earliest short story collections for Christmas. I started with Jamaica Inn, which I only know from the Hitchcock film and was delighted to find it very different (the film isn't very good and it is one of the few Hitchcock films in which the director does not appear). Halfway through Metal from Heaven. No judgement yet.
In December I read the Warlord Trilogy by Bernard Cornwall - the characters from.the King Arthur myths but set in a realistic historical setting. I really enjoyed it. I also read Willow's book of short stories and loved it. The final one was my favourite! I'm interested to see the videos for Joe Abercrombie and Mistborn. I liked Mistborn but I didn't always enjoy the writing, especially the magical fight scenes...I found them boringly technical and overly descriptive at times. I wonder if anyone reading the comments had read my favourite book: His Bloody Project by Graeme Macrae Burnet?
Have you read Our Wives Under the Sea? For all I know, maybe you recommended it here, lol. If you haven’t, dang, get on it asap. I was mesmerized, and even shed a tear at the end.
I'm reading James at the moment and it's incredible, I find it hard to believe that Orbital could be better than it. I'll find out eventually when I get Orbital from the library. I'm only 100th in the queue...
Christmas present book list: The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter Burning Your Boats: Collected Stories by Angela Carter The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente Can't wait to get to reading them, but currently reading the Finnish-Icelandic Nordic Noir series Hildur, by Satu Rämö and loving it! Happy to be reading it in my mother tongue (Finnish) since I usually read books in English.
I finished The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods👍🏾👍🏾. Christmas received The Courting of Bristol Keats by Mary E. Pearson. I always enjoy and look forward to your book commentaries. Have a wonderful 2025 year and as always Happy Reading from Tennessee, USA✨
4:14 - this book made quite some noise in Ukraine once it became a common knowledge that, while featuring two Russian characters (with all their typical Russian mysterious soul bs some Western authors can't seem to get enough of), it not so subtly avoids mentioning a particular country Russia is decimating right now. The Booker's decision is incredibly political in its avoiding politics, and it was a political decision to spit Russia's victims in the face.
I actually read Yellowface a few days ago, and just finished days of shattered faith from Tchaikovsky both of which I really liked. Squeezing in “the subtle art of not giving a fuck” which is less good, quite annoying actually Got “the way of kings” from Brandon Sanderson lined up for the new year. Hope I like it because it’s 45 and half hours long. I’ll likely put it down a few times, break it up with some lit fic
I feel soooooo vindicated by your opinion on Orbital. I read it before the prize and was so shocked when it won, more so when everyone started unendingly praising it. It had so much to say but ended up saying so little././.
Here's what I read Just for the summer by abby Jimenez ❤ My song by harry bellefonte memoir ❤ Be my baby by ronnie spector memoir ❤ Blackwood farm by Anne rice book 8 in the vampire chronicles Second chance in new port Stephen by tj Alexander Resurrection walk by Michael Connelly Only for the holidays by abiola bello ❤ For real by alexis hall Wild eyes by elsie silver ❤ The true love experiment by christina Lauren ❤
I'm so confused by the mistborn book. None of the mistborn books are called "mistborn". Its the final empire, well of ascension and the hero of ages for the first era of mistborn. What is happening?? Also, the stormlight archive is soooo much better
You should try. Gentlemen bastards Even the male cgaracters are complex and admirable despite not fitting the female daze...the prose and word building ❤ ua-cam.com/users/shortsy_SUzkPBLxY?si=5Y0khFXyHPJGU-5R

I’m just starting to get into fantasy and your videos are so helpful and you are so authentic and refreshing!

Love Joe Abercrombie. Just started The Justice of Kings and am enjoying it.

I think Orbital was my biggest disappointment of the year. I much preferred ‘It Lasts Forever and Then It’s Over’.
