    I once played the last movement in a public park in China. I thought that was the only place I'd find listeners who didn't know the joke. I was evidently wrong.

    In his op; 33, Haydn dclared that he initiated a new way to write string quartets. This quartet is an example of this new way. Nothing has beeen revolutioned, but the writing is larger, new equilibriums are reached. The interpretation is outsatnding.

    Awesome playing...maybe I can convince my orchestra mates to do Haydn's E-flat major Joke.
    I thought she was going to fall off her chair when she gave the cue.
    My class would crack up if I gave that big cue to my quartet...LOL...hmmmm so tempting....maybe worth doing :) !!!!

  • @elisenotes

    Just gorgeous - every player is totally engaged and expressive throughout, regardless of the sometimes simplicity of the lower parts. However, Alexandra Kazovsky deserves a particular callout for her masterful colour, vitality and peace with the sometimes crazy 1st violin passages. [Just a bit weird that MKI lists the violins as GG&AK. Of course chamber groups are teams - but with this piece the 1st violin has the meat in every movement and she clearly deserves the billing.]

      @@andrewroberts8139 I guess some of them would if they don’t know the piece or that it’s intentional! I studied the final movement in A Level Music so learnt that Haydn put the break in on purpose, so it’s actually written into the music to act as if the piece has finished before it technically has. I guess that was just his sense of humour 😂

      I'm following along in the score for a music history class, and yeah. Leading to to the end, there's three sections where they play a phrase after a grand pause, and the bit at the end follows after a grand pause that covers 3 measures.
      He must've written it with the 3 bar vs 1 bar for emphasis, because I believe a grand pause can be held as long as desired.

    • @ArturKorotin
      @ArturKorotin 8 років тому +11

      James Shallenberger Well, maybe its about expressing the music visually as well. Kind of like when you go to a play and the actors don't just speak the emotions, they also do movements with them. This is similar because they are trying to evoke emotion with sound patterns using them as a language for the piece, so it's like they are also moving with it because it is as if it comes from their own mouths. It is a conversation after all.
