Masafumi Nagasaki reacting to his old documentary

  • From 2018 Masafumi Nagasaki had struggled in the city trying to adapt to modern society. When he was kicked out from his desert island, the Japanese Government provided him with a little bedroom and a very little money to cover his primary needs.
But unfortunately, after 4 long years back in civilization, he hadn’t been able to make any new progress or make any friend.
Nagasaki had to live in human civilization surrounded by people during a pandemic like the Covid 19 which he could have skipped had he reminded on his desert island.
During those 4 years in civilization, Nagasaki spent most of his days hidden in his dark room away from the noisy world. His tiny room became his new desert island where he could isolate and it also became the only place where he could take his clothes off and walk freely like he did for the last 29 years.
When he felt too trapped in his room, every few days he used to go out and collect rubbish from the street as he was horrified with the pollution and all the waste that human creates.
So, as soon as we told Nagasaki the plan of bringing him back to his island, he jumped of joy and cried of gratitude.
Back in 2018, when he was ‘rescued’ from the beach, almost unconscious, Nagasaki left all his belongings behind. He or the Government never returned to the island to collect them.
Once we were on the island, we started to realize he was not as strong as he used to be in the past. Despite he was 79 when we first met Nagasaki in 2014, he used to be very agile, energetic and capable to survive on a desert island. But nowadays he is already 87 and the last four years he spent it in a tiny room.
The rest of the evening was very memorable. Nagasaki jumped into the water, laughing, looking to the sky, saying thanks to life. His happiness was so contagious that we couldn’t feel more pleased.
As evening was approaching it was time to prepare dinner. Our plan was to leave the island on the next day and leave Nagasaki alone to restart his new life. After a nice talk around a fireplace we all went to sleep.
But in the next morning Nagasaki was feeling very tired. We thought it was probably because of the amount of emotions he had on the day before.
As the morning went on, it seemed that Nagasaki didn’t feel confident enough to continue the same type of life he used to have for 29 years. Every time we discussed with Nagasaki about his future plans on the island he became serious, unsecured, and concerned about his strength to survive again in such a place.
It was becoming clear that Nagasaki was not ‘young’ anymore. Especially during the last 4 years that he has been locked in the city, he had lost all the power that he had.
It was heartbreaking feeling for all of us. His will was to stay, there was not doubt about it. But his body couldn’t respond. Sometimes he seemed to have some lack of equilibrium while doing things. So we asked him to make lunch for us in order to test his skills before we left him alone on the island. But it took him almost 4 hours to prepare some rice and eggs.
With those capabilities it was not going to be easy for him to survive long. On a desert island like Sotobarani there are plenty of tasks to do every day, especially if you are a perfectionist person like Nagasaki.
After lunch, Nagasaki asked us to stay on the island longer taking care of him, and then he would return back to civilization with us. And that’s what we finally did. We extended our stay in Okinawa in order to help Nagasaki to enjoy a few more days on his beloved island. However it was so sad seeing that he was not going to achieve what he proposed to himself. He was not going to be able return back to nature as he wished.
The day that we all left the island, we were glad to see that Nagasaki didn’t want to take any of his old belonging back to civilization. It was definitely true when he said he wasn’t attached to things.
Luckily Nagasaki was not sad to leave. I seemed he was satisfied to have had the opportunity to say bye to his island. Maybe in a few years from now, if he still desired to spend his last days at Sotobarani Island, when it is the right time and when he thinks he is ready to abandon this world, then we will be there to help him.

Qué triste... Pensé que nunca se iría voluntariamente, pero ha envejecido mucho, aún así cuesta creer que prefiera estar en la ciudad!
Sabes si necesita ayuda o le ayudan? Porque si no puede cocinar etc...

Such a sad and interesting life from this dude because he's basically from two civilizations and yet on the island world he uses experience from modern civilization. He must have been a really nice guy to leave it and live on the island.

Reading the narrative, it seems those 4 years in civilization broke him
If he hadnt been found, he wouldnt have gone to civilization, and still maintained his confidence or adapted to aging
Such a sad end to his story
    Real shame he got discovered
Such a beautiful human he is

Exactly my thoughts. This poisoned hellhole tore him down and seeped all he had left in him after the island restored him for these 29 years. It's so much easier to destroy and kill than it is to build and nurture.

@@Docastaway Hola Señor Cerezo, I'm reading your friend "Davo" Glasheen's book right now. He mentioned you when he needed help when he fell and hurt himself and then he told the story of Mr. Nagasaki in his book. That's why I ended up here.
-Just a question i have: Do you know if Mr. Nagasaki have a wife and children?
      Greetings from Switzerland

Viver sem o amor, sem a religião, sem a sociedade, realmente bem animalesco. É óbvio que devemos contemplar a natureza e perceber o mundo também pela ótica do poder do agora, mas esse homem se "despiu" de toda a sua humanidade.
