    Years in outboards I have ...the additional suggestion to run the engine dry after a flush, by fuel line disconnect, after a passage, and engine FW flush, then to drain carb fuel bowl when you leave engine for 1, 2 , 3 weeks is good practice, and is worth all the effort taken and ensures your engine is always ready for the next voyage. Best practice.

    Good afternoon All,
    I have the same issue, boat idles fine. In FULL throttle she goes slow. There's a sweet spot on my Throttle but dosnt go any faster than 1100-1300 rpms.
    Engine has good compression on all cylinders. Reading about 140 for each.
    The first thing I changed was the Prop. It was the one with the rubber on both ends so I bought a nice one thats solid metal. Also changed the gear fluid while I was at it.....
    I changed so many things on this 1979 Evinrude 85hp engine. Started with the spark plugs, boots and wires, coils, battery packs on both sides, solenoid for the starter, the starter, primer pump and all full lines including adding a new filter.
    I also rebuilt the carbs and had them cleaned in some hydroelectric cleaner that really shocks the life out of you cause i touched the water....
    started using high quality gas and i've added SeaFoam to the tank to better the fuel. Still do not know what the heck is going on?!?!?!
    Thanks for this video, we all have a common ground!
    -Nic

    wish you would do a video on 4 stroke outboards making oil. I have a 2013 Yamaha F70 that I purchased new. Broke it in just like the manual said. Never had a problem for the first three seasons. Then last year after winter I hooked the hose to it and started, let it run for about fifteen minutes. I turned off and when I pulled the dipstick the oil was all the way up the dipstick. I drained the oil into a bucket and the changed the filter and put new oil in it. The used oil smelled like gas was in it. This engine has about a 100hrs on it and it doesn't stay in the water. Found out from the mechanic at the dealer they had the same problem on their rental pontoon boats because people just put and never run them hard. Now I run it at higher RPM's for the first 15-30 minutes and it does seem to take care of it. This is not just a Yamaha issue but happens to many manufacturers. Any thoughts?

      Ventures With Joe that's extremely exaggerated lol. I'd say you only have to worry about it if you know you aren't going to run it for 30+ days, then you should drain carb of fuel.

    It's not a good idea to run your carbs dry as it will dry out any seals and gaskets. If you properly service the fuel systems you don't need to do this. First fill the tank this will eliminate condensation. Next you need marine fuel stabilizer. Run engine with muffs for 5 to 10 min. The fuel system has now been winterized. Change lower unit. Grease fittings remove battery and your done.

      I took your advice. Guess what, when i took my carburetor apart the bottom needle was suck and the screw that holds the float on was ate up from the fuel. thanks. well, It wasn't you who told me to do this. But many years ago that was the best way to do it. Until ethanol came along.

      That's the way I do it. Long life fuel additive.Full tank. (Non ethanol) Run motor. Store boat. Batteries on smart charger.

    The biggest issue with all water craft engines is the use of "fuel stabilizer" IT'S GARBAGE! Don't be lazy thinking that fuel will be ok after several months of sitting. Just remove the fuel at the end of season. Simple. You pay thousands of dollars for that Engine and yet cheap out on taking care of it. This goes for any fuel that will be sitting for more than 2 weeks.

I've been getting all kinds of answers between disconnecting the fuel line to stop the motor after use and just leaving the gasoline in the motor. I don't get out to the lake or river every week. More like once a month. But what would disconnecting the fuel line be bad if I actually used it more often?

    I have a 1990 Johnson 200hp 2 stroke and it just got a tune up. new plugs, new fuel lines and bulb, new impeller, fuel pump was good, carbs are good, spark and compressions all good. I had a problem with it the other day after the tune up was done, it would not go faster than 10mph. Called the shop they said I needed to let the engine warm up longer than what I did. They also said check the fuel and the prop does that sound about right? Also would you happen to know what the stock prop size for a that motor would be?

    • @boatsdotcom
      @boatsdotcom  8 років тому

      +onelik We need to start out by noting that it's nearly impossible to diagnose an engine from afar, but that said, insufficient warm-up most certainly does not sound like your issue. The prop would be suspect if the engine was turning the recommended WOT rpm, which in your case should be in the 5000 or 5500 rpm range. Otherwise, the fuel system is a possibility. As far as a "stock" prop goes, there's no simple answer. The correct prop depends on the amount of weight and type of hull it's pushing. Fortunately, most suppliers will let you try a prop or three and swap them until you find the right one. For more info on choosing the correct propeller, read our Understanding Propeller Pitch article
      www.boats.com/how-to/understanding-propeller-pitch/
      which has our How to Find Out if You Have the Right Pitch Propeller video embedded. Good luck!

    • @slingshoter8783

      I would think it would be best to run the fuel out of the carburetors. Then there is nothing to eat at the metal in them. The top carb always has no fuel in them when you tilt them up. it drains out somehow. every time i have cleaned are rebuilt them they have no fuel in them. and the gaskets are fin in them too.

      Yes correct for carbureted 2 cycle outboards, the service manual I have says at the end of the season, to cut off the fuel then run at idle till the engine starts to sputter then shut it off. This way as soon as the lowest carburetor starts to run out of gas, the engine is off so there is still oil coating those cylinders but some of the gas has been used up so less to dry up and leave behind problem causing gunk.

    any time you are having erract. run problems one simple check my fix it the tiny little oring in fuel connector can develope a hole from use and age pull old oring out by hooking it with a fish hook replace oring with a new one all boat shops carry them there is one in each end of fuel line should keep some on hand. these cause idle ok but when you rev up theoring is sucking air not gas ----about 50cts repair

    Running a 2-stroke motor out of gas? No way. Not doing that to mine. The oil/gas mixture is what lubricates the engine. Running it out (running lean) is running w/out lube. Plus there will always be some left in the bowl.
    I run ethanol free non-oxygenated fuel with SeaFoam. She's sat for a year like that with no issues.

    • @boatsdotcom
      @boatsdotcom  11 років тому

      Hey Sam - there are a few possibilities, but most commonly if the boat ran okay and then this starts happening out of the blue, your prop is spinning out on the hub. The first thing I'd try doing is putting on a different prop. If it operates properly, then you need to have the old prop re-hubbed. If not, you'll have to head for the mechanic.

    How do you flush an outboard motor that is mounted on a sailboat that sits on a saltwater mooring for 6 months at a time. My best idea at the moment is to flush it from a 5 gallon jug of onboard fresh water after each weekly sail? That seems like a hell of a lot of work.

      samiam1150 No, it doesn't harm the engine one bit. Remember, these are carbureted two-strokes we're talking about, not complex EFI engines. All the marine mechanics we've known through the years give the exact same advice.

      ***** Two strokes are lubricated by the oil that is mixed with the fuel. An excessively lean fuel mixture can and does harm 2 stroke engines. When I bent wrenches on marine engines we drained the float bowls. We didn't run them dry.

      If it has one, then the thermostat may be stuck closed. It's fairly easy to check.

    I have a 70hp yamaha 4 cycle on a pontoon boat my wife has had since long before we got together. i put new tanks on it ran it with water before taking it out on the lake and it ran fine. Didn't get 200 yards and it quit. Put a new primer bulb and fuel filter in it and it still won't run. It fires and dies. Anybody got any ideas I'm thinking fuel pump but I really don't know this motor.

      Might try and check your spark plug wires and make sure they have no cracks or anything like they. They could be grounding to the engine block if that is the case.

      Yamaha boat having a hard time to turn on

    • @Nibbles53
      @Nibbles53 7 років тому

      Also may try checking your fuel lines, gas filter, make sure there are no obstructions in the lines. Check for cracking in the lines, leaks at connections, Gas tank's vent is open, if all that checks out move on to next step. You want your fuel system to be air tight so that the carburetors can pull the fuel from the take. Next thing that I would do is carburetor rebuild. Buy some carburetor cleaner at any auto parts place and follow a diagram I use boats.net for all of mine. If you are unsure how to do them take it in to get them cleaned, get your timing checked while your boat is there. They will be able to find the problem.

    What does flush your motor mean????

    • @hansb5107
      @hansb5107 8 років тому

      It means you need to flush it with fresh water. There are two ways to do this after bringing the motor onshore: a) stick the shaft down into a huge bucket of fresh water (ensure the cooling water intake is submerged) and let the motor run for a few minutes, or b) connect a fresh water hose to the cooling water intake (requires a special part to make the connection), turn on the fresh water and then run the motor.

    Is it possible to drain fuel on a 50 hp evinrude etec? What kindof fuel is best to use for it also, unleaded gas?

    • @boatsdotcom
      @boatsdotcom  10 років тому

      Hi Elton Williams, you can drain the lines and filter, but a bit of fuel is bound to remain. As far as fuel type goes, Evinrude recommends any gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher and no more than 10% ethanol.

    • @mattwaters6987
      @mattwaters6987 5 років тому

      Hi rob. In my Honda 2.5 and my Mercury 9.9 I strictly run premium 91 octane which is non ethanol. I never use any fuel additives because gas companies already add there own. I only add fuel stabilizer to the tank. Hope that helps...🎣🚤

    HONDA 115 HP OUTBOARD WILL NOT GO PAST A CERTAIN SPEED

  • @carpetp22
    @carpetp22 10 років тому

    I lost power in my 115 hp Yamaha after not using it in a pretty long period. It was of course bad gas although the tech said the gas was okay after doing a visual test. Took to the shop they had to have the injectors cleaned. Got it back did not use it that much but did run the boat every month for 15 minutes. Problem returned. Took it back ended up doing the same job over. This time I made them drain the tank. To insure this would not happen again I used non-ethanol gas. Ran well for a few months but is now starting to break down when I try to get 5,000 rpm. Took the boat on fresh water ran it at 3,000 rpm gradually moving it up to 4,800. Ran fine and ran it a long time. I finally tried 5,000 rpm and it starting losing power again. The gas in it now is fresh clean gas.

      Hey Carmine Petrangelo, sorry you're having so many issues, but the news I have isn't good; it sounds like a new problem, unrelated to your fuel issues. There are a number of potential reasons the outboard could be acting like this, and it isn't something that can be diagnosed from afar. I'm afraid you need to get that engine back into the hands of a good tech.

      ***** What would be some of the different possibilities? Knowing that at least gives me some possibilities to look into. I have already have had it worked on twice. I also could use a good contact number for Yamaha.

    • @boatsdotcom
      @boatsdotcom  10 років тому

      Carmine Petrangelo It could be as simple as a clogged filter or a cracked hose, or as complex as an ECU issue. Your best bet is to go to the Yamaha Dealer Service Locator at yamahaoutboards.com/dealer-locator, plug in your zip code, and see who is near-by.

    Ridiculous '' advice '' . Draining is not necessary as long as you use only ethanol free gas... and the stabilizer's only purpose is to hold the octane level up which will work up to 2 yrs.
