One of the greatest Japanese fighters of all time! Yoko Gushiken's career was short but dominant as he reigned as WBA Light Flyweight champion for 5 years making 13 successful defences. Known as "Fierce Eagle" Gushiken was a crafty Southpaw with underrated defensive skills and counter punching so that's what I wanted to showcase here in this highlight. The best Afro in the game! www.patreon.com/haNZAgod
What I really enjoy about your channel is how you highlight fighters who are rarely mentioned or have an underrated skill set. I would love to see a defense highlight video of Santos Laciar. He’s known as a relentless fighter but his fight against Peter Mathebula is worthy of a defensive roll and slips highlight.
Sure another future Laciar highlight I'll add to the plans. The next 2 highlights coming up are Michael Moorer's jab and Pernell Whitaker's great performance against Jose Luis Ramirez.
Gushiken, one of my favorite fighter who seems to be somewhat forgotten, sadly. Thank you for bringing light on him, and especially on his very underrated defensive skillset. Your channel is amazing, as always
Right, this is why I LOVE this channel. I consider myself a boxing purest and pretty much my entire free time outside of my family is/has been consumed with boxing my entire 31 years but I've NEVER heard of this man and he looks incredible. Thank you Hanza, you're an absolute star👍🥊
@@hanzagod Actually Jamie Rios was a pretty solid fighter. As per Ring Magazine he was listed in the top 10 best fighters from Panama. Unpredictable with a slippery defense.
Gushiken-san was always a favourite of mine, ever since I seen a photo of him in a boxing book back in the day. I just knew that that 'fro would be able to throw some serious hands...and I wasn't wrong. Great video mate, as always educating the next generation to the past generation.
There is also a boxer with similar hairstyle like Salvador and Yoko, it's Elly Pical,an IBF world champ, he's also a nice counterpuncher, though sometimes relied on his left too much
@@zanicedavies6975 first Indonesian world champion, hits hard but still needs more skills I think, just like most southpaw his jab is mostly just used to cover up his left hand, although there's so much more, his left was still powerful regardless, ko'ed a dude with a liver blow.
@@zanicedavies6975 anyways, you can just type "Ellyas Pical vs" to search his matches,I recommend watching his match with judo chun,he got his ibf title on that match.
One of the greatest light flyweights of all time! Dominant, dominant prime. He fights similar to his gymmate and former WBA light flyweight champion, Katsuo Tokashiki!
hard to believe it took over 20 years for this man to be a hall of famer. If he were american he would have been a 1st ballot hall of famer after 5 years.
Kanmuriwashi was amazing. Didn’t waste his punches. Killer accuracy. Many southpaws have a pawing right jab and over rely on the straight left. Gushiken however was a well rounded combination puncher. Awesome video that shows he could just about do it all. Nice counters.
Your channell should have millions more followers and views. The music and editing is superb. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. You keep me motivated
Definitely. His slips, ducks, dodges and dips were connected to his foot movement. He coiled and sprung off the slip and dodge with the counter hook. Or it was simultaneously the same movement, depending on the offense of the opponent.
Interesting to note that Yuri Arbachakov and Yoko Gushiken share the same record of 23-1. Both fought out of Japan and retired after losing their first and only loss.
Unfortunately not as he's been with Showtime for a good portion of his career. The video would get taken down / blocked in the US just like my O'Shaquie Foster highlight.
0:28 that swivel is indicative of his rare level of expertise in movement. Look at the left under hook to the body instantaneously. This is, incidentally, why Boxers before 1985 would 99% destroy most all boxers beyond 1990. Recently, boxers do a lot of "halting and posing" ; too much "posing" . There is much less movement on the legs and feet in recent boxing. Gushikem would likely go 75-0 now with 73 KOs in this era.
Man haha! I thought I was back in the 19th century seeing that word. But though it may be possible, I remember seeing that his fro was just the result of a perm or something. Almost everybody is mixed with a little something though.

In Okinawa he is still beloved
Underrated fighter but also one of Japan’s best fighters. Gushiken was a beautiful technical boxer-puncher. Also had an ATG afro.

Thanks bud glad you liked it! Gushiken was a fantastic fighter, just lacked top quality opposition but his reign was dominant nonetheless.
@@hanzagod Could I ask you Hanza, what bouts of his would you recommend me looking up? Thanks
My favorite performance of his is the rematch with Rigoberto Marcano. His 2 fights with Pedro Flores were great too, lots of back and forth action.
@@hanzagod Thank you Hanza🥊

Wonderfully voluminous afro, Yoko.
Hair goals.
Actually Gushiken had a bald spot that he was teased about growing up. The Afro covered it up.
@@sshimamsi6101a bald spot traded for a cool afro, sounds like a nice deal enough for Gushiken.

Beautiful boxing. Great offense when he moves to his open side, Supreme defense when moves closed. Awesome edit!
You got that right.
Great upload on Yoko Gushiken's defensive skills and counters as they were the thing of beauty.
He kept his elbows in tight and stayed in good position. Very solid
Woah his straight left & uppercut are crushing looks like a good counter puncher too
The Japanese sanchez

That man had one of the cleanest afros I have seen in boxing! He probably had a lot of Black fans back then.
Era muy bueno, le ganó muy bien a Martin Vargas.

I don't know his full ancestry but he's about as Japanese as you can get!
I remember looking it up and I think it's just a perm or something.
But, you never know because most of us in the world are mixed. I found out I'm 1.4% Japanese and I'm about as dark skinned as It gets, only 67% Black.
