Why Does Rubbing Tired Eyes Feel Good?

- It can be a wonderful feeling to give your tired eyes a good rub. And rubbing your eyes can help keep them moist, but it turns out it also can affect your heart rate.

Rubbing my eyes at night is one of life's simple pleasures. Glad to know the reason why.

Whenever I am about to have an anxiety attack my hands automatically cover my eyes--palms pressing against my eyelids. I never realized that it may actually have an affect on my heart rate and help me calm down. Weird.
Could very well also be a self regulation thing to control the input of stimulus when you're panicking
@@lightsinthesky4989 I guess a bit of both. When I can't focus on a conversation I also tend to close/cover my eyes.
Anxiety is simply forcing you to take note of something you're ignoring wilfully or not addressing some sort of trauma. Be it physical or mental. Address the issue and it'll go away.
When you have a panic* attack
@@Bear_the_shepherd panic attacks are actually worse and rare for me. I've had both and for me I have to make a distinction. Different people will probably classify them differently depending on their own symptoms whether or not they are "by the book" definitions.

The third eye is the pineal gland. It is called this because it responds to light and secrets melatonin when the sun goes down. AKA it makes you sleepy when it's dark out. It is thought to have evolved from a light sensing organ similar to an eye, but now it lives in the center of our brain.

Omg. Really? My son has horrible allergies and rubs his eyes constantly. The problem is antihistamines make him so tired he can only take it at bedtime. Still trying to find something to make it go away during the day.
@@perfect1087 try newer antihistamines like zyrtec, or just plain moisturizing preservative-free eye drops (not decongestant drops). The eye condition is keratoconus and is very hard to treat. It gives you double vision and blurring but normal glasses and soft contacts wind up not working and you need special, expensive scleral lenses. When I was a kid, I used to sleep with my teddy bear's nose pressed up against one of my eyes. I guess I was using my heart to get to sleep
I sleep with PJ's (clean ones obviously) pressed against my face in the eye region, pretty sure it does the same thing. Slows my heart and makes me calm down enough to sleep.
I guess that's why there's eye coverings that have cushion for people. I always thought it was too block out the light to help people sleep.
Omg I also sometimes use something light touching my eyes to help me fall asleep, and looks like it actually makes a difference. Science!!
This is really weird that this was recommended to me today. I was literally just approved for a corneal cross-linking procedure to halt keratoconus (progressive misshaping of the cornea) that was likely caused by habitual eye rubbing due to allergies. I can whole heartedly agree with the ending recommendation of this video. Dont rub your eyes. I am effectively blind in the left one.

1) Glad to see the industry getting some scientific recognition
2) if you want a more specific de-stressing spot, on the upper portion of your eye socket near your nose you can feel a little notch. This is so crazy. My mom teaches other moms to wipe a child’s face and eyelids with a warm rag when they’re having a temper tantrum.

Being diagnosed with keratokonus I don't rub my eyes ever and I'm happy you mentioned that it might cause issues.
Damn you are missing out on the simple pleasures
this is a question I did not know I needed answered until I saw the title.
Super interesting video! When I complain to my husband that I have a terrible headache he always presses on different parts of my head, obviously, lots of points close to my eyes. It feels kind of scary how much pressure he is applying so close to my eyes, but I trust him. He can always make my headaches less debilitating.
Interesting fact about the trigeminal nerve: it is also the nerve responsible for brain freeze through referred pain, or pain that is felt elsewhere from the actual site of pain.
Ooo, thank you for the video! the calming effect makes sense when taken in context of the "dive reflex" technique to calm down an anxiety attack. (You put a cold compress on your eyes, bend over & hold your breath for 30 seconds).
P.S. You can look up the T.I.P.P. Skill from DBT to learn about the other physiological hacks.
I was awake all night. Just the video I needed to see, goodnight now..!
I have asked myself (and google) this exact question before. Thank you for the answer!
This is so helpful! This is great to use to prevent anxiety attacks!

fun fact: if you massage your eyelids instead of your eyes, it doesnt put the pressure on the cornea that can cause cornea damage but still stimulates tear production
I never even wondered about this until I saw this video and now I'm glad it's answered.
Oh wow this explains why we use this on patients suffering from SVT. I always wondered how it was a legitimate treatment
So, that's why I was rubbing my eyes when feeling anxious... I was slowing down my heart rate!!!!
all the vet techs watching this are probably having flashbacks to brachycephalic dogs with proptosis who need atropine shots so their hearts don't stop during treatment
My people! 🐶♥️
I understood some of these words, like "all" and "this"
@@RosesAndIvy yeah I want a translation lol 😂
I know brachycephalic dogs are the ones with flatter faces, like boxers or pugs, and atropine is a heart medicine. If I Google "proptosis," I'm going to be upset, aren't I?
@@elif6908 brachycephalic animals are things like Pugs, French Bulldogs, or Persian cats - animals with very short, squished faces from selective breeding. These animals tend to have much shallower eye sockets than your average animal, so they can be prone to Proptosis(an eyeball bulging or popping out of its socket). When this is being popped back in at the vets, I guess they need Atrophine shots, as the pressure of their eyeball being pushed back in can stimulate the nerves and cause a dangerous drop in their heart rate.
One more reason to never buy a brachycephalic animal! The cutest pets are the ones that can breathe unhindered, and whose eyes are happy to stay snugly in their sockets.
Great, another thing to add to my list of heart related fears lol. I'm usually fine, but anything to do with the heart freaks me out for some reason. God I wish I was a machine
Bruh same. A mechanical body would be so much less mental stress.
My dad figured out that ocularcardiac reflex thing when we were babies, & it still works on us as adults. Whenever we would get fussy he would cradle us in one arm and use his other hand to repeatedly stroke our faces from forehead to chin. Worked like a charm to calm us. I used it on every kid I ever babysat. I even had a panic attack with him when I was an adult & he just walked up to me and started running his hand softly down my face & it stopped the attack in it's tracks. After I learned about it in my college psych classes I told him why it worked & he was pretty proud he had come up with the technique.
Fascinating stuff, thanks for sharing! Now...is there an answer to why we (I) see weird geometries when we rub our eyes?

I am a keratoconus patient and my eyesight has become so deteriorated. One of the main habits that cause keratoconus is rubbing your eyes. So regardless of the joy this habit might bring to you, I hope everybody stop it.
So mumma and I both have eye problems and tend to over rub them, but we discovered when we get right into it, our breathing goes weird, slows right down and sometimes even stops for a bit 😅
The heartrate thing can actually be super useful to know in emergency medicine. Like how the smell of alcahol reduces nausea. Some random trivia that can make you a better emt/medic/nurse
Chronic rubbing of the eyes can contribute to the development of an eye disease called Keratoconus. This disease affects the cornea,. the most external tissue of the eye, the cornea becomes very thin acquiring the form of a cone causing moderate to very serious lost of vision. Depending the stage of the disease is the treatment to receive , from very special and expensive contact lenses to cross link ( special drops are applied to the cornea then these drops are “hardened” with a special light) to corneal transplant in most advance cases. Keratoconus can’t be treated with glasses. I am writing this because I have this illness. I have a corneal transplant and wear contact lenses that cost around 3,500 dollars ( in my case the contacts have been replaced approximately every two years.)
At first I read the title as "third eyes" rather than "tired eyes". Thought I had missed out on some crazy new discovery or something.
Mehn rub your eyes, you are seeing threes😅😂😂

Thanks for the info. I used to rub my eyes a lot but now I can't remember the last time I did. I am sure the next time I feel the need to, I'll stop myself.
Please never rub your eyes too much , I did it too much in my childhood due to a allergy (which I still have mildly ) now it has lead to astigmatism
*At **2:49**, when he says, "If you got a burning question.........", my eyes started to burn. Since it's burning, guess rubbing my eyes now will really affect my heart rate by giving me heartburn!*
What helps me in morning is cold wet wash cloth wiping my eyes and face I do this while I do my morning breathing treatments. I have Cystic Fibrosis. Cold wet cloth is so refreshing
I was thinking about this very topic earlier today.
What I still don't understand is why infants (less than ~6 months) - who demonstrate almost no motor control whatsoever - are somehow able to reach up and rub their eyes with fairly decent accuracy when tired. They don't scratch bug bites. They maybe vaguely reach for an ear that has an ear infection, but with eyes they actually rub them. It's one of the first recognizable and proto-intentional action I've seen from my kids, but it's probably mostly instinct? It just seems so bizarre to me. Can barely reach for an object but instantly knows how to touch their own eyes.
I really like this host
Time for me to go to sleep now, but thanks for the video! This is so interesting.

OK, dictionary.com says either pronunciation is correct, but like me, they say that the preferred pronunciation of "basal" is with unvoiced "s" (like "base"), and "basil" (voiced "s") is a spice. "Basel" (short "a", voiced "s") is the city in Switzerland.
....I think this explains part of why sleep masks work for some people. Sure, it blocks the eyes but... there's also a gentle pressure of the mask on the eyelids, which is kinda like rubbing eyes.
A better question is... why do I see grids and squares when I really rub my eyes hard, and not say, organic curves and circles that I probably should given I'm rubbing my eyes.
